DVD To End All Wars
A Japanese P.O.W. camp during World War II becomes the battleground for the souls as well as the lives of its Scottish and British prisoners. Based on a true story, To End All Wars centers around Ernest Gordon (Ciaran McMenamin), a young soldier who wants to teach philosophy. When Gordon recovers from seeming death by illness, the other prisoners agree to become Grodon's pupils, studying Plato, Shakespeare, and the Bible. Gordon's superior officer, Ian Campbell (Robert Carlyle, Trainspotting, The Full Monty), scoffs at the increasingly pacificist bent of Gordon's teachings. Jim Reardon (Kiefer Sutherland, 24, Freeway), a lone American running a black market, is equally skeptical. But under the relentless brutality of the camp, the only way for the soldiers to survive is to find what gives their lives meaning. The strong performances of To End All Wars makes this moral conflict as vivid as any gun battle. --Bret Fetzer
In the wide variety of war-related movies, To End All Wars stands as a light house showing everybody else the way to go.
The greatest strength of To End All Wars is that it dares to wrestle with real feelings in real people in a real war-situation.
It portrays strong feelings such as despair, hatred, forgiveness, love, and ethics in a powerful way. It shows that forgiveness is the only way to break chains of hatred and despair, but it also honestly points out what happens to a man who can't receive and extend forgiveness.
The acting is excellent, and this movie certainly deserves to be watched by a great audience.

Amazing War Movie!!
Based off of a true story, this movie shows you another side of World War II that we are not used to seeing- the prisoners of war held in Japan. It delves deeper in to the minds of those at the camp than you would ever expect, and has underlying philosophical messages that really make you think about the experiences of those men who were held in the camp. And hey, Kiefer Sutherland is in it so it can't be all that bad :)
Outstanding film that decides to teach rather than preach.
This movie is not, like some have been led to believe, based on "A Bridge Over the River Kwai." In fact, it's quite the opposite. This is the real account of what happened to those soldiers and how they overcame Imperial Japan's monstrous violations.
The film is but a simple account of what actually happened there at that camp, it doesn't try to glorify it or make it conducive to some secretly hidden Christian agenda. Like it or not, many WWII veterans became Christians on the battlefront. The religion has helped, is helping, and will help American soldiers deal with their stresses for ages to come.
The movie is a gripping tale of forgiveness, humility, and responsibility that will leave a permanent impression. The story is even more gripping of a tale than "The Great Raid," which is similar to it.
Keifer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle do an excellent job with their acting and really bring their characters to life. The Japanese actors are also on top of their game as the movie is very well paced and acted throughout. The video and sound also leave you with nothing to complain about.
WWII movie fans simply cannot pass it up and others would be cautioned, it is violent. But within the blood and suffering, the themes of forgiveness and ultimately love are seen more clearly and last longer.
No one ever griped about "The Last Samurai" having some fiendish Buddhist agenda, or "Pitch Black" having an Islamic agenda, so why all the hate towards this film (which is based on actual events, not fiction)???
For the same reasons you didn't catch this in the theatre.
Like The Passion of the Christ, Luther is the story of a spiritual leader, German monk Martin Luther (Joseph Fiennes), in opposition to the religious orthodoxy of the time (in his case, the 1500s). His goal--to bring God to the people and to take money, fear, and shame out of the equation--made him a reformer to some, a heretic to others. Released around the same time as Mel Gibson's blockbuster, it failed to attract the same degree of attention--or controversy. Granted, it's a different film, but not radically so. Directed by Eric Till (Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace), Luther isn't always easy to follow or as emotionally involving as it could be. That said, it's a fascinating story and Fiennes receives solid support from Alfred Molina (Frida), Bruno Ganz... This is a medium whodunit with a twist and then a double twist..but it is NOT that the lead character can see the future through grasping objects, but rather that he can see the events that occurred in the past, but only through the eyes of the user/possessor of that object, which usually happens to be the victim..but naturally the victim never looks completely at the killer's face until...but I won't spoil it...
A good X-Files episode is more satisfying..in fact a good Dead Zone episode is more satisfying..but if it's on cable and you happen to have a couple of hours to kill... go for it. I rented this film before I bought it. I must say that this is Kiefer's absolutate "best" performance. I rented it for 3 straight weeks and then bought it. I watch it over and over again. The story was so sensitively told and the cast was absolutely perfect!!!! Kiefer of course was the solid anchor and Kyra brought in the rear w/her solid portrayal. I loved the actress who played Michelle as well, she was a delight. I also particularly took notice of the actress who played the young Natalie. I am expecting more from this young lady and look forward to seeing her in future projects.
But, back to the story. My heart was touched and I found that "I" wanted to go help Roy myself. That's just how profound Kiefer's portrayal is!!!! It seemed like I was watching my own... Solidly built around a subtle yet commanding performance by Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda emerged as one of the most highly-praised dramas of 2004. In a role that demands his quietly riveting presence in nearly every scene, Cheadle plays real-life hero Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in the Rwandan capital of Kigali who in 1994 saved 1,200 Rwandan "guests" from certain death during the genocidal clash between tribal Hutus, who slaughtered a million victims, and the horrified Tutsis, who found safe haven or died. Giving his best performance since his breakthrough role in Devil in a Blue Dress, Cheadle plays Rusesabagina as he really was during the ensuing chaos: "an expert in situational ethics" (as described by critic Roger Ebert), doing what he morally had to do, at...
