"Hello." This movie would have done better at the box office if it had been cleaned up some because the story is the kind that children like. While this movie has no nudity it does have some bad language and sexual discussions that are inappropriate for children and are probably why it received an "R" rating.
I enjoyed this movie for its advertisements which show the power of truth. I teach marketing at the University of Southern Mississippi and use this movie in my class to introduce several ideas about the art of marketing communications. Everyone howls at the ads and it is very popular with my students.
But... you kind of have to enjoy Dudley Moore's type of humor to sit through the whole movie at one time. I personally find his movies to be tedious but that is just me. For instance, while the ads are funny this movie raises some questions. Why are any of these people in an asylum (they don't look dangerous)? Are Crazy People really smarter than the rest of us? Would these types of truthful advertisements actually increase sales?
In short, it is a shame that this movie had to have a plot to hang the advertisements on. Taking the serious parts of this movie seriously is a big mistake. So enjoy it for what it is, a silly little comedy with a romantic twist. This movie is best seen in large groups, so invite your (grown-up) friends over for the viewing.
"Hello." (an inside joke- watch the movie)
Crazy People , Very Funny Movie
I haven't watch Crazy People in years but now I realize I have to watch this again. Anyone who appreciates the world of advertising, or who is having a breakdown over advertising would appreciate this movie for sure. :) The "Hello" guy is definately memorable and the song he sings will stick in your head for years to come... "Hello" Hello Hello, What a wonderful word, Hello... and so forth. I really got a kick out of this movie , its silly, funny and yet witty. I love the concept of a man who worked in advertising takes a breakdown and does commercials and doesnt care who he offends... uniquely funny
I'd Go To The Institution To Meet Daryl Hannah!!!!
In this movie Dudley Moore playes Emery, an advertsing executive who is slowly gowing crazy. Then his employer sends him to a Mental Institution for some much needed rest and Therapy. However Emery's latest Ads have become a big hit and he is seen as an advertising genius.Once again Hollywood makes fun of the serious issue of Mental Illness without having any social conscience whatsoever. I give this movie 5 stars because I do like Daryl Hannah and her character in this movie is about the only one who is believable.
Wholly Moses! is a clever, 1980 Biblical farce that has much in common with Monty Python's Life of Brian. Dudley Moore, between star-making performances in 10 and Arthur, plays Old Testament-era idol maker Herschel, whose life parallels that of the more famous Moses in many ways. Forced into the role of seer for Egypt's pharaoh, Herschel becomes convinced he has divine powers, until destiny proves otherwise and his subsequent misadventures as a slave, fake eunuch, and betrayed husband (Laraine Newman plays Herschel's unfaithful spouse) lead him to question the necessity of believing in any god at all. Wholly Moses! is directed by Gary Weis, perhaps still best known for his short works on the early Saturday Night Live, and the film plays like a... Blake Edwards, who managed to capture middle-aged angst so well in 10, managed to offend a variety of constituencies with this sporadically funny take on that reliable laugh-getter, bigamy. Well, not bigamy, technically: Dudley Moore is only married to one woman, Micki (Ann Reinking), but she's too busy to have the baby he longs for. He winds up in an affair with Maude (Amy Irving), who gets pregnant, thus satisfying his paternal urge. Except that then Micki announces that she, too, is pregnant, doubling his pleasure--and his problems. Twin pregnancies lead to a variety of complications, particularly because Maude's father is a professional wrestler. And when both women wind up delivering in the same hospital on the same day, well, director Blake Edwards does what he can to make... ... or so we're told. A pity this is the exception to the rule.
All the elements that made the original Arthur great, especially the one-liners, the cinematic flow and feel of the movie, Arthur's irrepressible personality, and the naturalness of the absurdity, are all disposed.
The replacement is a series of hackneyed scenes, strung together in a formulaic and unbelievable setting. It suggests a film held hostage to its executive producer - the same Moore that was genius in the first movie - attempting to shoehorn a reality play and forced character development into an environment that was so charming due to its lack of either.
When you get lost between the moon and New York City (ahem), chances are you'll find yourself taking another look at this hit comedy starring Oscar-nominated Dudley Moore as the charmingly witty, perpetually drunken millionaire Arthur Bach. Arthur falls in love with a waitress (Liza Minelli) who doesn't care about his money, but unfortunately Arthur's stern father wants him to marry a Waspy prima donna. The young lush turns to his wise and loyal butler (Oscar-winner John Gielgud) for assistance and advice. Arthur was a huge hit when released in 1981, as was its Oscar-winning theme song by Christopher Cross. Few remember that the movie was, sadly, the only one ever made by writer-director Steve Gordon, who died less than a year after the film's release. Consistently funny and...
