DVD Challenge of the Super Friends - The First Season (DC Comics Classic Collection)
Challenge of the Super Friends is the ultimate animated all-star contest of good versus evil. The original Super Friends (running from 1973 to 1977--Wonder Twins and Gleek anyone??) was made up of the greatest DC Comics superheroes fighting together to uphold justice for all mankind. Overall, it was a pretty good show, but getting stale very fast. In 1978, the superhero animation bar was raised high when the first (and only) season of Challenge of the Super Friends hit the Saturday morning circuit. Immediately these 16 episodes made up the best that Super Friends had to offer for one reason alone: the creation of the Legion of Doom, banding together the 13 most sinister villains of all-time from remote galaxies. Led by the sinister genius of Lex Luthor, the Legion of Doom was dedicated to take over the universe, and only the Super Friends, led by Superman, Wonder Woman and the Dynamic Duo, dared to challenge this intergalactic threat and bring them to justice.
There is no denying that animated superhero shows have come a long way since Super Friends. The Challenge of the Super Friends is very '70s in presentation, riddled with inconsistencies and drawing mistakes, and allowing heroes to fly even if they couldn't fly in the comics. However, there is no denying the staying power of the stories, its concept, the superheroes/villains pairing and its overall charm. Included in this set are a couple of nice features, particularly the superheroes/villains biographies, each with their own mini-video. There is also a good, brief documentary of today's comic book and TV show creators reflecting on their impressions of Challenge of the Super Friends and its influence on their careers. If you want to take a trip down memory lane to the Hall of Justice or the swamps of the Hall of Doom, you will not be disappointed by this set. --Rob Bracco
Review(s): DVD Challenge of the Super Friends - The First Season (DC Comics Classic Collection)
Wonderful DVD
This two-disc set contains all sixteen episodes from the series "Challenge of the Super Friends". Unlinke the other shows, which just had Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, two twins, and a dog, this amazing series also featured Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman, Apache Chief, Samurai, and Black Vulcan, although there are neither twins nor a dog. Some of these do not appear in any other shows on television, such as Apache Chief, Samurai, and Black Vulcan. These Super Friends, alias the Justice League of America, don't just face different villains. They also battle the 13 members of the Legion of Doom. Giganta, Bizarro, Riddler, Gorilla Grodd, Solomon Grundy, Toyman, Cheetah, Scarecrow, Braniac, Black Manta, Scarecrow, and Sinestro, led by Lex Luthor, all enemies of certain superheroes in this group in the comics. These DVDs also include profiles of both the Super Friends and the Legion of Doom, which state their powers, first appearance in the comics, enemies in the team which they fight, and even a music video of them. There is also commentary on Wanted: the Superfriends and The History of Doom. Here is a list of the discs, their episodes, and their bonus features.

This is a very nice set with some very cool episodes. Some really good ones are The Time Trap, Secret Origins of the Superfriends, and Superfriends Rest in Peace. There is a lot of classic action, surprises, laughs, and adventure in this amazing collection. The storylines may be a little the same and it might get repetitive but I really like it.
Challenge of the Superfriends
Excellent packaging with double sided discs. Two key episodes "Wanted: The Superfriends" and "History of Doom" feature an audio commentary by DC Comics staff working on the current printed page adventures of Superfriends characters like the Flash. Here's hoping Warner releases every season of Superfriends on DVD, including the preceding one hour Superfriends shows from 1973 & 1976.
Love it!
I bought this for my 5 year old son because he's really into the Super Friends right now. I knew this wouldn't be violent and I wouldn't have to worry about context. He loves it! He doesn't get all of the voice over information, but it doesn't matter. He loves the characters and the action.

Eight years before Tobey Maguire was born, the animated Spider-Man spun his first web across America's television screens. The program ran from 1967 through 1970 on ABC, and imprinted its theme song, "Spider-Man, Spider-Man/ Does whatever a spider can / Spins a web, any size / Catches thieves--just like flies" on a generation of viewers.
The comic book Spider-Man, who debuted in Marvel's Amazing Fantasy in 1962, epitomized the superhero as antihero. During his battles with bizarre villains, Peter Parker was beset by self-doubts and personal problems. The animated Spider-Man was a straightforward action superhero who was too busy performing weird stunts like fashioning a boat and motor out of spider webs to worry or agonize.

From the creators of Batman: The Animated Series comes DC Comics' polar opposite: the Man of Steel in Superman: The Animated Series, Volume One. Like the Dark Knight's series, Superman: The Animated Series is a successful, modern telling of the classic story. Superman's tale is already known to most people, enduring as a modern American myth. The challenge for the producers was how to make something old and familiar new again. Quite successfully, they managed to modernize the Superman environment and its characters enough to attract a new audience but also maintained the integrity of the mythos to satisfy longtime fans. What lifts Superman: The Animated Series above all past Superman shows is its high-quality animation, strong dramatic scripts, a star studded... Warner Brothers' Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995) remains a striking, stylized program that helped to revitalize the familiar comic book hero. Drawing on such diverse influences as Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, the Fleischers' Superman cartoons of the early '40s, and contemporary Japanese animation, the filmmakers stress interesting designs and cinematography. The Caped Crusader prowls a sinister, Art Deco-styled world of tall verticals, sharp angles, silhouettes, searchlights, and grid-like shadows cast by window frames. Its visual pizzazz eclipses Filmation's pallid kidvid, The Batman/Superman Hour (CBS, 1968), which ran off and on in various incarnations through 1981. Many of the same artists worked on the Batman animated... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 06 July 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
