Abbott & Costello Around The World And On Venus!
"Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948) is the best movie they ever made, and one of the funniest films ever released. In addition to featuring Universal's greatest monsters, the movie has some of the duo's funniest dialogue. Chick (Bud Abbott): "People pay McDougal cash to come in here and get scared." Wilbur: (Lou Costello): "I'm cheating him. I'm getting scared for nothing." Chick: "You're making enough noise to wake up the dead!" Wilbur: "I don't have to wake him up. He's up." This movie rates 5 stars.
"Mexican Hayride" (1948) showcases Lou Costello's brilliance at physical comedy. Every time he hears music, he has to dance the samba. His attempt at bullfighting is hilarious. However, Bud plays a bigger heel than usual, making him a very unsympathetic character. I give this movie 3 stars.
"Abbott and Costello Meet The Killer, Boris Karloff" (1949) is one of my favorite films. The Lost Caverns Hotel is the perfect setting for this murder mystery/comedy. Dead bodies keep turning up in different rooms and, in one especially funny scene, two corpses play bridge with Abbott and Costello! The scene in the lost caverns with the bottomless pit is scary and surreal, resembling hell itself. I have to give this movie 5 stars.
In "Abbott and Costello In The Foreign Legion" (1950), Bud and Lou are wrestling promoters who travel to Algeria to bring back Abdullah, a proud wrestler who refuses to lose any scripted matches. Bud and Lou are tricked into joining the Foreign Legion, avoid getting killed, encounter many mirages, and manage to save the day. I give this film 4 stars.
"Abbott and Costello Meet The Invisible Man" (1951) is another terrific film. Bud and Lou, having graduated from detective school, set out to clear boxer Tommy Nelson, who was framed for murdering his manager. Tommy uses the invisibility formula to avoid arrest until his name is cleared. With Tommy's invisible help, Louie the Looper (Lou Costello) wins the middleweight championship, in one of the funniest fights ever filmed. This is another 5 star film.
"Comin' Round The Mountain" (1951) is my least favorite film in this collection. The scene with Lou and Margaret Hamilton, battling it out with voodoo dolls, is one of the few highlights. Dorothy Shay has too many musical numbers and Bud Abbott, playing a character named Al Stewart, should have sung "Year Of The Cat." At least that would have given him more screen time. I'm afraid I can only give this movie 2 stars.
"Lost In Alaska" (1952) is a mediocre movie. Tom Ewell plays Nugget Joe McDermott, a former sheriff and prospector who finds gold, but loses his heart to a dance hall girl. Bud and Lou save him from committing suicide because the floozy he's in love with doesn't want to marry him. It's interesting to note how Bud and Lou almost died of heat stroke and dehydration in the desert when they were in the Foreign Legion, only to nearly freeze to death wandering around lost in Alaska. I give this movie 3 stars.
"Abbott and Costello Go To Mars" (1953) is unfairly criticized as being one of their worst films. Having traveled the globe in their movies, it was only natural that Abbott and Costello go out of this world! When Bud and Lou accidentally fly a rocket and land in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, they assume that they're on Mars. When they actually fly to Venus, which is completely populated by beautiful women, they initially assume they're back on Earth. The Three Stooges also have some similar experiences in their feature film "Have Rocket, Will Travel" (1959). The stooges accidentally fly a rocket to Venus. In both films, the accidental astronauts return to Earth as heroes, complete with a ticker tape parade. Perhaps that's why critics don't rate "Abbott and Costello Go To Mars" highly. This film features sight gags, such as them flying a rocket through the Lincoln Tunnel and making the Statue of Liberty duck, instead of featuring their usual humorous dialogue. I give this film a firm 5 stars. The total number of stars for all of the films is 32. Divided by the 8 movies, that gives this boxed set collection a total of 4 stars.
BUD AND LOU - NEVER ENOUGH!!!!
This set in the Abbott & Costello collection of films is another winner with any A&C fan - young or old. Growing up in the '50s these movies and more back to the silent classics helped to fill the gap on TV between and before the network shows. Plus all of those late night movies. I only saw one or two re-releases of Bud and Lou's movies in a real theater but they are all classic gems from what is the "golden age of films". Simple, innocent, hilarious, and just for laughs. That is what these old comedy veterans and films were all about. I can't recommend this collection or the two earlier ones more highly. If you grew up with, lived with, or simply would like to encounter these legends of comedy then don't pass these up.

I've become addicted to Abbott and Costello films since discovering this DVD set and the ones that followed. There was a day when comedy was creative, silly, and clean, and that time is captured on these DVDs. Anyone who wants a good laugh should check them out, especially the movies "Hold that Ghost" and "In The Navy." More Info about this DVD Director(s): Arthur Lubin - A. Edward Sutherland - Erle C. I love Abbott and Costello, but these "Best of's" released by Universal are so pathetic it isn't even funny. They are flipper discs, and they are so easily damaged and cheaply made that they aren't good for anybody. I loved the movies in these sets, but come on Universal, stop using these cheap discs and use single sided discs. More Info about this DVD Director(s): Charles Barton - Daniel Helfgott - Erle C. It's indeed great to have the last few films on this final collection (Jekyll and Hyde in particular), but why is this volume with less discs and less movies MORE expensive than the other volumes? And even worse, neither the packaging nor the discs themselves give ANY indication as to which movies are on which sides of each disc. You have to pop them into your dvd player and wait for the menu to come up to find out. Blatant mistreatment of these precious films...

Percy Kilbride, Marjorie Main and their 13 amazing children continue to bring joy and entertainment in these remaining four classic movies. Marjorie Main shows the range of her talent and her beauty while Percy Kilbride keeps you wondering what he will be up to next. These movies also showcase a number of "stars" such as the talented and comedic "Hilo Hatty." I recommend this DVD for those who enjoy a trip down memory lane ... If you don't like classic comedy, you're not going to like this either. But for me, this is my first stop when I need to take a break from the Marx Brothers (who I watch way too much). These films are exhibit A for Bob Hope's comedic talents, and Bing's cooler than you or I will ever be. Plus with Bing around, I'm actually happy to listen when the songs come, which is not the case for most 30's and 40's Hollywood films. Morocco is my favorite, but any of these four films can brighten a dark day. There are a few decent extras on this set, and for $20 it's a steal. If you're willing to watch a comedy made before "Animal House," you should go ahead and take the plunge into Hope and Crosby's world.
