    Barely tolerable...

I can't believe *this* movie is available on dvd, when countless others I have dreamed of, longed for, hoped for, etc...sit in VHS bins just aching for a dvd release. Such is life I suppose. Truly no accounting for the decisions of studio execs, nor taste. At any rate, I remember watching this movie decades ago, on KTVU Channel 2 in SF, California. I always thought it was so funny when, between commercials, the announcer would say, "We now return to 'Sssssss.'" The movie itself, kinda creepy in a really bad movie sense. But even then, the effects and "horror" of it were just awful. It was just an all-around bad movie, badly done, and even didn't have the camp factor going for it. You want camp? Go for John Waters. Otherwise, avoid this.

I suppose it's good for a very brief novelty kind of thing, but I sense it was trying for something more grandiose...kind of a "Dr. Moreau" element anyway. It failed miserably. Perhaps good for absolutely bottom-barrel cheese in the absolute, worst-of-Joe-Bob-Briggs kind of way, but other than that, pass on this.

    Pretty SSSssssweet.

"Sssssss" (don't forget, that's -7- s's!) is perhaps not the BEST killer snake movie out there, but since it's the only one that features character actor/genius Strother Martin as a snake-handling scientist, it gets MY vote.

The snakes in this movie mostly mind their own business; it is the 'mad scientist' figure Martin who does the most evil. He lures a promising student to help him with his studies, and proceeds to use the unwitting nerd as the next step in his ongoing quest to transform a human into a cobra. Huh? Yep, into a cobra. Something to do with evolution, or something, I dunno.

Anyway, the rather cheap effects of this transformation are still pretty gross and uncomfortable looking, and Reb ("Space Mutiny", "Howling II") Brown shows up as a lunk-headed football bully who picks on the nerd and gets a dose of snake-fanged justice later. From title screen to finish, it's the scaliest B-movie out there, and I highly recommend it for some cheap snake scares and laughs.

"Neanderthal?! I don't like the sound of that!"

Judging by the cheesy video cover I thought this movie was going to sssssssuck, but it was pretty good.

Strother Martin plays a presumably normal, but actually off-kilter herpetologist who's obsessed with the idea of turning a man into a snake. The perfect unsuspecting victim comes in the form of his new assistant Dirk Benedict.

Good special effects, cool make-up, lots of onscreen snake action, enjoyable script and solid acting this film has it all. Except an attractive female. The girl who plays the mad doctor's daughter is a good actress, but there is no way that Dirk "Face" Benedict is going to fall for a nerd like that.

D: Bernard L. Kowalski (ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES, NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST)

Dr. Carl Stoner - Strother Martin (THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, COOL HAND LUKE)
David Blake - Dirk Benedict (SCAVENGER HUNT, DEMON KEEPER)
Steve Randall - Reb Brown (EARTHQUAKE, HOWLING II)

Orca - The Killer Whale DVD

One of the most overlooked films in history, Bo Dereks debut, come on. When they kill the mother orca and she gives birth on deck, why hose it off? Throw that little guy in a pan and fry him, good tasting meal, idiots. Some trivia, the orca actually attacked Richard Harris and told him to lay off the Old Spice Cologne. Richard did, he switched to Elizabeth perfume. Not good with the orca, he dies. Armani cologne dopes. If you look close at the end you can see the mechanical penis on the orca, Richard has it lodged in his rear. Serious, worst movie in history, why am I writing a review? I don't want little children to see this and be scared at Sea World. More Info about this DVD

    The Legacy DVD

"The Legacy" is an interesting and unique horror flick that takes place in England. Sam Elliot and Katherine Ross star in this flick and do a fine job with their respective roles. The plot involves a young lady who has a job possibility in England and she talks her boyfriend into going abroad for the fun of it if nothing else. Well, they don't have a hell of a lot of fun, but Ms. Walsh does inherit a gift of sorts, if you can call it that...I won't say anymore as that would ruin the plot, but there is a hole or two in this plot that you will probably pick up on, but "The Legacy" is still quite effective with its essential purpose as a supernatural evil horror flick.

The couple have a bike accident and a strange man takes them to his house so they can wait to get their bike... More Info about this DVD

    Piranha DVD

Roger Corman produced this shameless Jaws rip-off at the height of the "nature gone wild" boom of American cinema and struck B-movie gold. Scripted by John Sayles and directed by Joe Dante, this tongue-in-cheek thriller stars Bradford Dillman (doing his best Rip Torn impression) as an antisocial mountain man and Heather Menzies as a rookie detective who race a school of mutant piranha downriver. Dante and Sayles provide the requisite blood and gore for this drive-in meat market: a kids' summer camp and a waterfront amusement park await the little beasties. Along the way, riverside retiree Keenan Wynn gets his ankles stripped clean, camp counselor Paul Bartel is chomped on the cheek by a hungry little bugger who takes to the air, and hordes of unlucky bathers are caught in ... Squirm DVD

I am a very patient movie watcher. I let the credits linger and I panic if some body trys to talk to me right after a really great movie has ended, because how am I supposed to know what I think of it if I'm still soaking it in? Squirm has pretty much nothing to soak in. It's a talkie. It's all talk, really, and it is so slow-moving. It's just a terrible waste of time, and I waited for it to get better and it never did. By the end I couldn't get my self to watch the extra features on this disc, because I just really wasn't interested. More Info about this DVD
