Hollywood's 1940s craze for composer biographies did not yield many masterpieces, and Till the Clouds Roll By is one of the weaker efforts in the bunch. Robert Walker tries gamely to suggest the decency of Jerome Kern but is defeated by a sluggish story line pairing him with a crotchety mentor (Van Heflin). As a collection of freestanding production numbers devoted to Kern's songs, however, the movie has appeal. It begins with almost 20 minutes of Showboat (including Lena Horne's plaintive reading of "Can't Help Lovin' That Man") and the hits just keep on coming. Judy Garland, who appears in a few scenes as stage star Marilyn Miller, contributes "Look for the Silver Lining" and a Gatsby-esque production number on "Who?" Her songs were staged by then-hubby Vincente Minnelli. Other highlights include a young Angela Lansbury, still with baby fat, singing "How'd You Like to Spoon with Me?" Lucille Bremer, a leggy starlet who never quite caught on, plays Kern's protégé. She spins a delightful duet with Van Johnson on "I Won't Dance," two redheads capering with gusto. It all ends with another splashy theatrical montage, climaxing in Frank Sinatra's take on "Ol' Man River." That might sound like a strange idea, but Ol' Blue Eyes clearly loves the song (he would return to it often in his career) and is in beautiful voice. Despite being a lavish MGM production, Till the Clouds fell out of copyright and into the public domain, so print quality (and even running time) can be variable. --Robert Horton

    Clouds Roll

A nice Hollywood biopic of Jerome Kern, like most of the numbers and a favourite actresses Judy Garland and June Allyson. Performance of Dorothy Patrick is good.

    Disappointed

A year or so ago, I ordered the $4.95 version of "Till the Clouds Roll By". After putting it in my DVD player, I soon realized why the cost was so low. The picture was TERRIBLE. Two weeks ago, I decided to try again and purchased the most expensive of the DVDs offered - this one for $14.95. I read the info before purchasing and saw that it was supposedly remastered. Imagine my disappointment when I turned on the DVD player once more and found essentially the same lousy picture. I enjoyed the film when I saw it on AMC and really wanted a good copy of it. Apparently one doesn't exist - at least through Amazon.

    Poor

I don't understand the many five star reviews visitors have given "Til the Clouds Roll By". It's film proof that bigger is not necessarily better - as this cast is unbeatable, but the film is beaten by every other M-G-M musical. Unlike the many musicals M-G-M released, this film is majorly DATED and gives that effect in almost every aspect. It seems decades older than the rosy "Show Boat" that came in 1951 or any other M-G-M release of the era, including "Meet Me in St Louis" and dozens of other gems which pre-date it. The old-fashioned effect this movie has is partly a result of the dreadful state it is in. I would say remaster it - but why waste time when we have so many other worthwhile M-G-M musicals to preserve? (See "Royal Wedding, a decent one which is in poor condition).
The supposed biography of great songwriter Kern may as well forget the story (which is slow and also very unlike his actual life) and do what it wants to - get every M-G-M contract star of the late forties to perform one of his songs and string them together for a concert.
I can't say any more - this movie is the worst musical M-G-M ever did. Amateurish and tiresome.

Easter Parade (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD

Don Hewes (Fred Astaire) is devastated when his longtime dancing partner, Nadine Hale (Ann Miller), breaks up the team to set out on her own. Determined to prove that he can succeed without her, Astaire vows that he can pick any random chorus girl and make her a star. Fortunately for him, the chorus girl he picks happens to be one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, Judy Garland (playing Hannah Brown). Easter Parade turned out to be the first and only collaboration between the two screen legends. Garland made the 1948 film despite ongoing health problems then had to pull out of a planned follow-up, The Barkleys of Broadway (Ginger Rogers replaced her); Astaire had retired following Blue Skies in 1946 but was brought in for this film as an emergency... Broadway to Hollywood: The Classic Musicals Collection is a five-film set of fondly remembered, mostly MGM musicals: Easter Parade (1948), The Band Wagon (1953), Bells Are Ringing (1960), Finian's Rainbow (Warner, 1968), and Brigadoon (1954). Four of the films are making their DVD debut, all are available separately (for a higher price), and the two best films, Easter Parade and The Band Wagon, come in two-disc special editions complete with commentary tracks, new and vintage documentaries, and musical outtakes. The Band Wagon (Two-Disc Special Edition) with Slipcover DVD

The Band Wagon (1953) marked the culmination of a series of near-autobiographical pictures Fred Astaire made for MGM following his return from premature retirement in the late '40s. Astaire plays Tony Hunter, a fading film star (his big hit: Flying Down to Panama) who decides to return to his former glory, the Broadway stage. (In 1931, Astaire had starred on Broadway with sister Adele in The Band Wagon, a revue that lent some of its songs to this film.) His playwright-songwriter friends (Nanette Fabray and Oscar Levant) hook him up with Broadway's hottest director, Jeffrey Cordova (a nicely hammy Jack Buchanan), who proves that the "new" theater traditions can be an awkward fit with the old. Hunter also finds himself at odds with his prima ballerina leading lady (Cyd... More Info about this DVD

Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD

One of the finest American musicals, this 1944 film by Vincente Minnelli is an intentionally self-contained story set in 1903, in which a happy St. Louis family is shaken to their roots by the prospect of moving to New York, where the father has a better job pending. Judy Garland heads the cast in what amounts to a splendid, end-of-an-era story that nicely rhymes with the onset of the 20th century. The film is extraordinarily alive, the characters strong, and the musical numbers are so splendidly part of the storytelling that you don't feel the film has stopped for an interlude. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD
