  • DVD The Silence of the Lambs (Full Screen Edition)

Based on Thomas Harris's novel, this terrifying film by Jonathan Demme really only contains a couple of genuinely shocking moments (one involving an autopsy, the other a prison break). The rest of the film is a splatter-free visual and psychological descent into the hell of madness, redeemed astonishingly by an unlikely connection between a monster and a haunted young woman. Anthony Hopkins is extraordinary as the cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, virtually entombed in a subterranean prison for the criminally insane. At the behest of the FBI, agent-in-training Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) approaches Lecter, requesting his insights into the identity and methods of a serial killer named Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). In exchange, Lecter demands the right to penetrate Starling's most painful memories, creating a bizarre but palpable intimacy that liberates them both under separate but equally horrific circumstances. Demme, a filmmaker with a uniquely populist vision (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild), also spent his early years making pulp for Roger Corman (Caged Heat), and he hasn't forgotten the significance of tone, atmosphere, and the unsettling nature of a crudely effective close-up. Much of the film, in fact, consists of actors staring straight into the camera (usually from Clarice's point of view), making every bridge between one set of eyes to another seem terribly dangerous. --Tom Keogh

Worthy of its Best Pic. Oscar

Story of Hannibal Lector as a sheephearder in London who is getting complaints from neighbors about his loud sheep at night. He trys to silence the sheep with bedtime stories but that doesn't work. Next he makes them watch "Glitter", that just incites them, drastic measures must be taken, and he does by duct tapeing there mouths shut. But than can only work for a while. Finally he decides to ax murder the entire heard, chopping heads, scrotums, babys, doesn't matter, he has to shut them up. Finally Lector finishes off the last sheep with a butcher knife up the anus. Lector then has a big cookout, invites the neighbors, everything is well and Gay. Weeks later Lector goes bankrupt and hangs himself from a McDonalds Billboard. Great movie, I love it.

    "Hello...Clarice."

This movie is what I think one of the top thrillers in history! The hit jackpot when they chose Anthony Hopkins to play Hannibal Lecter. Nobody could have done it any better!!!!!

To Enter The Mind Of A Killer She Must Challenge The Mind Of A Madman!

Let me start off by saying that this film is one of the best horror/suspense films of all time. I'm sure everyone and their dog have seen this movie. Ever since Criterion pulled their Special Edition from the shelves, this DVD has been able to do this film justice... until now. For those of you who are familiar with the Criterion Edition of Silence of the Lambs, this disc has many of the same features. I did not think that MGM could compete with criterion in terms of quality, but they have surprised me. The film mingles the horrors of criminal acts with the psychological horrors of Lecter's slow-motion interrogation of Clarice and of her memories that emerge from it.

This DVD release features an amazing documentary. This documentary is approximately one hour in duration, and incorporates the entire main cast. This is the best documentary I have ever scene in the form of supplemental material. We get insight from Anthony Hopkins, Judie Foster, and Jonathan Demme about the process and reasoning behind the films creation and success. As a nice supplement to this documentary, also included on this disc is the original 1991 making-of featurette. Both of these features are not included on the original Criterion release, and are a nice find for MGM.

The deleted scenes section absolutely blew me away. The criterion DVD had six deleted scenes, the MGM DVD has included an astonishing 22 deleted scenes. All of these scenes are either extensions of included scenes, or completed unseen footage. As in the case with most deleted scenes, some would have been nice to see in the final cut, and others were gladly eliminated. Also included are some funny outtakes, which were short but sweet. I give kudos to MGM for finding all of these rare scenes.

Other special features include a photo gallery, trailers for both Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, and a fabulous Hannibal Lector answering machine message. As to be expected, DVD basics such as cast filmographies and scene selection are included as well.

One glaring difference between the MGM and Criterion release is the audio commentary. MGM unfortunately did not include any commentary track. This is a shame, considering how important and useful commentary tracks are to DVD's these days. The Criterion release also included a few other special features not included in the MGM release. Criterion had a "Voices of Death" featurette, storyboards, and a copy of the FBI Crime Manual.

This disc is definitely worth owning. I would consider it a companion DVD to the Criterion release, not a replacement. This is a beautifully crafted film and DVD. I hope that MGM continues to make DVD's such as this, and I will continue to appreciate their Special Edition efforts.

    Hannibal DVD

Yes, he's back, and he's still hungry. Ten years after The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter (Anthony Hopkins, reprising his Oscar-winning role) is living the good life in Italy, studying art and sipping espresso. FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, replacing Jodie Foster), on the other hand, hasn't had it so good--an outsider from the start, she's now a quiet, moody loner who doesn't play bureaucratic games and suffers for it. A botched drug raid results in her demotion--and a request from Lecter's only living victim, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman, uncredited), for a little Q and A. Little does Clarice realize that the hideously deformed Verger--who, upon suggestion from Dr. Lecter, peeled off his own face--is using her as bait to lure Dr. Lecter out of... Red Dragon - Collector's Edition (Widescreen) DVD

A lot could've gone wrong in Red Dragon, but the movie exceeds expectations. Replacing the acclaimed Manhunter as an "official" entry in the Hannibal Lecter trilogy, this topnotch thriller--the second adaptation of Thomas Harris's first Lecter novel--returns to the fertile soil of The Silence of the Lambs, serving as both prequel and heir to the legacy of Lecter as portrayed, with mischievous menace, by the great Anthony Hopkins. Familiar faces and locations reappear (along with Lambs screenwriter Ted Tally) as Lecter coaches FBI profiler Will Graham (Edward Norton) in tracking the horrific "Tooth Fairy" killer (Ralph Fiennes), whose transformative killing spree is inspired by a William Blake painting. By dutifully serving Harris's potent material, Tally and... More Info about this DVD

Seven (New Line Platinum Series) DVD

The most viscerally frightening and disturbing homicidal maniac picture since The Silence of the Lambs, Seven is based on an idea that's both gruesome and ingenious. A serial killer forces each of his victims to die by acting out one of the seven deadly sins. The murder scene is then artfully arranged into a grotesque tableau, a graphic illustration of each mortal vice. From the jittery opening credits to the horrifying (and seemingly inescapable) concluding twist, director David Fancher immerses us in a murky urban twilight where everything seems to be rotting, rusting, or molding; the air is cold and heavy with dread. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are the detectives who skillfully track down the killer--all the while unaware that he has been closing in on them, as well.... More Info about this DVD

    Pulp Fiction (Collector's Edition) DVD

With the knockout one-two punch of 1992's Reservoir Dogs and 1994's Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ($8 million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Forrest Gump DVD

The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel... More Info about this DVD
