DVD True Women
This well-acted, sweeping herstorical epic focuses on the lives of three women, beginning in 1853. China Beach's Dana Delany is Sarah, the family matriarch, whose little sister Euphemia (a delightful and empathetic Tina Majorino) has been living with her best friend, Georgia (beautiful Rachael Leigh Cook), and Georgia's parents (Michael York, Julie Carmen) on a large, bucolic Georgia plantation. After the sisters' father dies, Sarah's husband, upstanding Texas Ranger Bartlett (Powers Boothe), takes "Pheemy" down to Peach Tree, Texas, to live with him and Sarah.
Pheemy and Georgia begin a correspondence chronicling their divergent lives. As Pheemy and her family work their farm and battle Santa Ana and hostile Indians, indulged Georgia is coming to terms with her family's greatest secret: she is one-quarter Native American. Majorino and Cook are excellent in their demanding roles and offer a challenge for their adult counterparts (Annabeth Gish as Pheemy, Angelina Jolie as Georgia). This film, originally a TV miniseries, is an earnest attempt to depict the difficult--and often tragic--role women were compelled to endure during this historically rich but phenomenally difficult time. True Women has plenty of action, but relationships, politics, and grim reality are the true focus, as issues of sexuality, prejudice, human rights, and of course slavery are eagerly examined in the frontier setting. The sensitive should be forewarned: it seems like there is a death every five minutes. --N.F. Mendoza
I cannot believe I had never heard anything about this movie previously! It ranks pretty darn close to "Gone with the Wind" in my book. Another title could be "True Grit...Women of Course!"
the best movie
this was the best movie i ever saw. i saw it as a tv movie
at first and then bought the movie. the women in this movie
brought the story so alive for me. its really a great movie
to watch and a fantastic movie for women!!!
"true women" is true!
"true women" is a super movie! It shows the problems faced by the Texas pioneer women-from Indians, disease, death, war, rivers, crops, children, and Texas politics! Its grand-pretty well acted and I have enjoyed it several times.
How can anyone fault this movie? It's sweet, with a wonderful cast. I think Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor wrote one of the funniest scripts, and they're performances are just fabulous! Paul Sorvino and Barbara Carrera went right over the top, with their pretentious "Count & Contessa" characters. I'm buying this movie, and I don't often do that, because it's theme of love and soul searching, combined with some of the funniest deliveries is too good not to watch whenever I need a pick-me-up. By the way, I'm not Italian, nor a New Yorker, but a Californian who appreciates talent and humor. Some of the cynical reviewers of this film could learn something from Lainie Kazan! This amiably amorphous comedy-drama about a myriad of articulate and witty people pondering the meaning of love was originally titled Dancing About Architecture. As one of the lovelorn puts it, in trying to explain the elusive nature of desire, "Talking about love is like dancing about architecture." However, with the way the characters in Willard Carroll's film talk, it sounds like they could dance a samba around Frank Lloyd Wright. This undiscovered gem doesn't have a particular destination in mind, as it weaves in and out of the stories of its high-profile ensemble, but it does offer some hilarious, sharp dialogue and quiet surprises. Carroll focuses his film on four couples, all in one way or another battling with the problems of relationships, ranging from long-marrieds (Gena... Angelina Jolie's strong-willed performance in Foxfire as Legs, the charismatic outsider based on the rebellious character from Joyce Carol Oates's novel, is a very good reason to see this 1996 drama. The film updates the story from the 1950s to the '90s, but for a while the air of teenage angst and confrontation is closer to the legacy of James Dean than gun-toting/body-piercing disaffection. Bold and larger-than-life, Legs quickly gathers a group of adolescent girls around her, each of whom has been sexually abused and is dealing in her own way with the emotional consequences. As expected, the girls plot out their revenge, but even more interesting is the intensity of their bond and rituals, the way they hang out in an abandoned house, their expressions of devotion. So tight... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Hedy Burress - Angelina Jolie Director(s): Annette Haywood-Carter DVD Release Date: Released the 06 June 2000 Usually ships in 24 hours

*Hell's Kitchen NYC* is a 1997 film directed by Tony Cinceripini. It stars Rosanna Arquette as Liz, William Forsyth as Lou, Angelina Jolie as Gloria, Mekhi Phifer as Johnny, and Johnny Whitworth as Patty. Ms Jolie's brother James Haven Voight has a brief appearance as a bartender. The soundtrack features recordings by singer Joseph Arthur and rapper Mekhi Phifer.
Hell's Kitchen is a neighborhood of New York City that has a long history of crime and violence. In recent years the area's name was changed to Clinton, apparently as part of a makeover of its notoriety. I'm told that only newcomers call it that; for those born there it's still "Hell's Kitchen" or "The Kitchen."
The movie *Hell's Kitchen NYC* aspires to be counted in the genre of what I'll term... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Tony Cinciripini DVD Release Date: Released the 13 January 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

Okay, I admit it: I have a weakness for Angelina Jolie. I would watch her paint woodwork, do crosswords, order pizza, etc. But this film, whatever it may have started out to be, should never have escaped the studio. Angelina Jolie plays a screaming drug addict, during all of the 4 minutes that she's in the movie. At one point, being driven in a car against her will, she screams that she wants out, and bangs the window of the passenger side for effect. Trust me: this scene was not in the script. She was screaming to get out of this picture. More Info about this DVD Director(s): Gill Dennis DVD Release Date: Released the 25 March 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours
