  • DVD The Three Stooges - Stooged & Confoosed (Colorized / Black & White)

A quartet of Three Stooges shorts (three new to DVD) make up this solid disc, all with mid-period Curly in woo-woo-woo form. "Violent is the Word for Curly" somehow morphs the boys from gas-station attendants to European college professors. Not only does it feature Curly roasting on a spit, but the Stooges instruct the students of Mildew College for Women in the intricacies of "Swinging the Alphabet," a memorable nonsense song. "You Nazty Spy" is the Stooges' answer to Duck Soup and The Great Dictator, as a cabal of businessmen install Moe as the dictator of Moronika. With an accidental mustache and jibbering German, Moe does a convincing Hitler. (But didn't he always?)

"No Census, No Feeling" is a rangy, so-so bit that begins with a lame premise about the Stooges as census takers (it was 1940, after all) and ends up at a football game. But the best gag has Curly mixing up a noxious fruit punch. You know "An Ache in Every Stake" will be a goodie from the moment Moe and Larry attempt to remove a block of ice from around Curly's head by using a chisel and mallet. Its centerpiece is a variation on the flight of stairs from Laurel and Hardy's "The Music Box," but Curly does nicely stuffing a turkey, too.

Stooged & Confoosed is presented with Columbia's "ChromaChoice" device, which allows for easy toggling between the original black-and-white shorts (which appear in great shape) and a colorized version. The colorized images are sensibly rendered, but they still have that washed-out paleness they've always had--eggshell greens and light browns abound. Stooges purists will stick to black-and-white, the better to appreciate the subtleties of a cheese grater being scraped across Curly's face. --Robert Horton

Review(s): DVD The Three Stooges - Stooged & Confoosed (Colorized / Black & White)
THE COLOR IS EXCELLENT- GREAT TO SEE CURLY IN COLOR

THIS DVD IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY , THE COLOR IS VERY WELL DONE ,WITH GOOD SHARP & CLEAN PRINTS , SO WONDERFULL TO SEE CURLY & THE BOYS IN COLOR & IF YOU DON,T WANT TO WATCH THEM IN COLOR YOU CAN VEIW THEM IN B&W , HOWEVER ITS SO GOOD TO WATCH THE THREE STOOGES IN COLOR -WHAT A TREAT , I HAVE READ SOME REVIEWS SAYING THE COLOR IS NOT SO WELL DONE , WELL ALL I CAN SAY IS PICKY-PICKY , I THINK ITS EXCELLENT ,5 STARS OUT OF 5.

    COLOR IS COOL!

I know that a lot of folks will disagree with me on this review. If you are a "purist," great! I respect that. But, even if you disagree with my opinion, that does not mean that my review in not helpful, even if it leads you NOT to purchase this product! We can agree to disagree.

And...as far as profit motive is concerned...Have you ever heard of anyone involved in a commercial enterprise producing an item NOT to sell? Here, at least an earnest, and perhaps, honest effort was exerted to create something that is, at the very least, technologically stunning. So, I ask you to be fair and open-minded, even if you are a purist. And yes, they could have included more episodes per disc. But, then again, the price is not exactly exorbitant. And...the cost to produce these episodes in color, I suspect, was significant.

    So, in MY opinion...
MAJOR KUDOS are in order for the producers and technicians of this series. Painstaking effort was obviously applied to get results that are extremely natural-looking, and to treat both the product and legacy with love and respect. The "new" color is quite exciting, especially for a big Stooges fan who has viewed these episodes dozens of times. The results are so good that, indeed, it appears as if these eposodes were originally filmed in color.

In this collection, 3 very, very good episodes and 1 so-so one are featured. All of these shorts feature Moe, Larry and Curly in their youthful, energetic prime.

"An Ache In Every Stake," is definitely one of the best Stooge shorts. In it, the guys play ice delivery workers turned makeshift cooks at a birthday party. Some of the all-time best gags are included. I love Curly's "conversation" with the block of ice he is charged with "shaving." And his turkey-stuffing routine is too classic.

In "Violent Is The Word...," we have another case of mistaken identity, where the guys try to make the most of their "good fortune." In this case, they are gas station workers (providing "Super Service") who end up as "professors" at an all-girls college. There is merry music making as the Stooges do "Swinging The Alphabet" [super silly!].

"You Nazsty Spy" features Moe's classic Hitler impersonation, Curly doing a brief Mussolini bit, clever word play, and plenty of wonderful gags.

"No Census, No Feeling" isn't the cleverest episode, and seems to get lost in midstream.

OVERALL, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for the quality of the episodes, for the excellent results on the "new" color, and for the opportunity to see something new in the old!!!

Enjoyable and fresh, with a new perspective

Wow. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw this stooges disc in the local video store. I thought....... "a color version" and didn't get my hopes up. Well when I got home and popped the dvd into my player I must admit I was pleasantly surprised.
The color looks great!!!!!! It is not perfect but miles away from anything ever done before...the flesh tones are a little chalky looking at times, but they sure beat b&w........you do get the feeling that you are watching the shorts as they were really happening instead of watching a dull old black and white movie ....... I love it ........

...if you're a purist then you can toggle the screen via the angle button to good old black and white. There is only 4 episodes on this dvd but three of them have never been released to dvd ever, so you can get 3 new ones and one already available ..... this dvd may not be for everyone but I think the color version enhances and makes the stooges seem more lively and gives you a perspective on the past of days gone by. Old cars and props look fresh and alive, instead of blending into the background.

I will continue to buy these new versions of colorized shorts from Columbia/Tristar.As long as they continue to make them available in b&w and in color on the same disc.

The Three Stooges - Goofs on the Loose (Colorized / Black & White) DVD

A four-pack of mid-'30s Three Stooges shorts, with enough concentrated nyuk-nyuks to satisfy fans. Two of the shorts are from their first year with Columbia, 1934. "Men in Black" has the boys as residents in a very unlucky hospital. It's nonstop mayhem, featuring an unorthodox approach to healing (the words "Give 'em the anesthetic" usually means a mallet will be applied to skull) and a good running gag about an ill-advised glass door. This one was nominated for the best short subject Oscar. "Punch Drunks" is an all-time Stooges gem, with Curly as Moe's new boxing discovery--but he can only achieve his fighting fury when Larry plays "Pop Goes the Weasel" on the violin.

From 1937, "The Sitter Downers" has three brides for three stooges, but their honeymoon is delayed by the building... More Info about this DVD

The Three Stooges - Stooges and the Law DVD

The quality of these retorations is pretty good, but not as top notch as some of the other releases.

This set's irresistable for seeing as much of Curly as you might need, though.

Given technology today, why could the studio not load a high number of all-Curly shorts onto one or a few DVDs? It would surely be a boon to Stooge lovers... More Info about this DVD

Three Stooges - Stooges at Work DVD

Whoever restored these shorts loves the Stooges.

It's clear that they went frame-by-frame, filling in scratches, blips and sound drops. And where frames have been missing in every version I've ever seen, they (somehow) extrapolated the material to create velvety, smooth action from highly compromised source material.

The special features are nice, too. But mostly here you get some wonderful Curly material, restored to such quality that it's like being in a Depression-era theatre, laughing along with all these other people so much in need of a laugh.

Enjoy! More Info about this DVD

The Three Stooges - Three Stooges in History DVD

Shemp had been called a much more talented comedian than Curly.

That shows you what reviewers know...Shemp is always going to stand in Curly's long, wide shadow. To Stooge fans, it's either watching Curly or waiting to watch Curly.

In this [really short] DVD you get more Shemp than Curly...I'd pass. More Info about this DVD

    Three Stooges DVD 12-Pack DVD

While there are good shorts in this collection, there are also some very funny ones omitted. The golfball scene that was cut out of Three Little Beers is a good one, but the fact that its not there doesn't completely ruin the short. There are 3 other DVD's that contain shorts that are not included. Not sure if that is because they came out after the collection was made, but I would have liked those included instead of the movies and Stop Look and Listen. More Info about this DVD
