DVD 13 Going On 30 (Special Edition)
Jennifer Garner glows like a rising star in 13 Going on 30, a girly version of the Tom Hanks classic Big. Jenna (Garner, Alias, Daredevil), a frustrated teenage girl, just wants to skip past all those annoying adolescent years and arrive at a glamorous adulthood--and thanks to some inexplicable wishing dust, she does. But once she reorients herself to a life as a high-end magazine editor with a sports-star boyfriend, she discovers that in the 17 years she skipped she became a not-so-nice person, including casting aside her best friend Matt (played as an adult by Mark Ruffalo, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). There's no question that Jenna will rediscover her lost innocence, but Garner rises above the lack of suspense. 13 Going on 30 floats along, buoyed by her goofy sweetness. Her lovely looks are made accessible by her unfettered silliness; it's a winning combination. --Bret Fetzer
B/C tom hanks sucks! Jennifer Garner sucks too. She's not very attractive or a good actress. Doesn't spoil the film though. It's got mark ruffalo & he's hot with a capitol OoOOOOOOOOooo. Cute movie thats actually pretty powerful at times. Recommended!
A surprising romantic comedy
I was surprised when I began watching my daughter's movie and couldn't stop. I sat down, grabbed the popcorn, and covered with the blanket. My eyes were glued to the TV until the last credits rolled. A VERY funny, sweet movie where the underdog, innocent, deserving girl wins!
A FUN FILM THAT TRIES TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY
CAN JENNA HAVE HER CAKE AND EAT IT TOO?
BACK TO 'OZ' SENTIMENTS? --- Jenna learns that there is truly NO PLACE LIKE HOME, but is it too late? Can Jenna have her cake and eat it too and if she does, what will happen to her?
IN A NUTSHELL: COOL AGE APPROPRIATE FILM THAT DEALS WITH REAL ISSUES
Well done age appropriate comedy that underscores the universal frustration and impatience that teenage girls are known for. However, this movie's theme is about doing something about it, and to that end the film takes Jenna on a magical mystery time voyage which lands her right where she thinks she wants to be ---- 30 - COOOOOOL & HOT!
But is that exactly what she wanted?
FORTUNATELY MORE SUBSTANCE FOLLOWS ---- '13 GOING ON 30' ABOUT SELF-AWARENESS
There is a price to pay for this jump to age thirty, and as the movie progresses, Jenna becomes more aware of that and more importantly; MORE 'SELF-AWARE' IN THIS LEARNING PROCESS! Exactly what Jenna discovers in this process is what the film is all about.
Needless to say, this is a well done fantasy that literally every girl has probably contemplated at one time or another in one way or another. This film brings that universal theme all together so that it does seem to resonate in similar but personal ways for different viewers.

THE DVD -- GOOD VIDEO/AUDIO QUALITY AND WIDESCREEN TOO!
You'll find several featurettes about 'the making of the film', but they were brief, too brief if you liked the film, as I did, than I would have liked since this, after all, is a fantasy film.
IN THE END -- WORTH SEEING - STRIKES A CORD STRONGLY AMONG TEEN GIRLS
Much in the same tone as "The Wizard of Oz","13 GOING ON 30" takes the thoughts and ideas of a disgruntled young girl, and plays them out in full fantasy form, with somewhat the same outcome. "13 GOING ON 30" is definitely one of the better teen flicks out there, and it nicely melds fantasy with a girls viewpoint into a somewhat familiar though original story.
GOOD TASTE WITHOUT PATRONIZING OR CONDESCENDING TO TEENS OR PARENTS
For parents, this is both an enlightening film, and a kind of time-capsule that is executed with surprisingly good tastes. An ideal film for parents to see with teens without the cringing discomfort that some films yield when viewed with the whole family.
The classic girlhood fantasy of marrying a handsome prince is given a surprisingly realistic and subtle treatment in The Prince and Me. A pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin named Paige (Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mona Lisa Smile) collides with a lazy, presumptuous exchange student named Eddie (Luke Mably, 28 Days Later) and, after a prickly beginning, falls in love with him--only to discover that Eddie is Edvard, the Crown Prince of Denmark. The scenario is pure wish-fulfillment, but director Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose) not only takes a closer look at what royal life is really like, she also takes the time to turn these fantasy roles into characters that have more than two dimensions. It's still a... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Julia Stiles - Luke Mably - Miranda Richardson Director(s): Martha Coolidge DVD Release Date: Released the 10 August 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

Kate Hudson wrestles with unlikely motherhood in Raising Helen, a comedy directed with the smooth professionalism of Garry Marshall, the man who brought us such cinematic fairy tales as Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries. Helen (Hudson, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) is an adorable hipster whose swift rise up the fashion industry ladder gets sideswiped when she finds herself responsible for raising three children, left in her care by the untimely death of one of her sisters. It's a standard frivolous-girl-grows-up story with an uneven script, but solidly performed by Hudson, John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), ever-sexy Helen Mirren (Calendar Girls), and especially Joan Cusack (In and Out, Addams Family Values), who takes an... Kate Hudson twinkles as the heroine of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a magazine writer assigned to date a guy, make all the mistakes girls make that drive guys away (being clingy, talking in baby-talk, etc.), and record the process like a sociological experiment. However, the guy she picks--rangy Matthew McConaughey--is an advertising executive who's just bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days; if he succeeds, he'll win a huge account that will make his career. The set-up is completely absurd, but the collision of their efforts to woo and repel creates some pretty funny scenes. McConaughey's easy charm and Hudson's lightweight impishness play well together and the plot, though strictly Hollywood formula, chugs along efficiently. At moments Hudson... If you are one of Hilary Duff's most ardent pre-teen fans, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in A Cinderella Story, but everyone else should proceed with caution. It's an updated fairy tale for the age of instant messaging, which is how Sam (Duff) develops a crush on Austin (Chad Michael Murray) before realizing that this Tennyson-quoting poet-at-heart is actually her San Fernando Valley high school's star quarterback and most desirable hunk. In a role that squanders her proven comedic gifts, Jennifer Coolidge is Sam's Botox-injected evil stepmother, and lame attempts at comedy turn her dimwitted stepsisters into buffoons, like many of the other cast members who struggle to find anything funny in the screenplay. So we're left with the bland, blonde charms of Hilary... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Mark Rosman DVD Release Date: Released the 19 October 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
