DVD Luther
Like The Passion of the Christ, Luther is the story of a spiritual leader, German monk Martin Luther (Joseph Fiennes), in opposition to the religious orthodoxy of the time (in his case, the 1500s). His goal--to bring God to the people and to take money, fear, and shame out of the equation--made him a reformer to some, a heretic to others. Released around the same time as Mel Gibson's blockbuster, it failed to attract the same degree of attention--or controversy. Granted, it's a different film, but not radically so. Directed by Eric Till (Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace), Luther isn't always easy to follow or as emotionally involving as it could be. That said, it's a fascinating story and Fiennes receives solid support from Alfred Molina (Frida), Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire), and the late Sir Peter Ustinov (Spartacus), in his final film role, as Frederick the Wise. --Kathleen C. Had bought this DVD last year and had intended to watch it then, but didn't. Today while working on some things I opted to watch it and what an excellent movie and one I think every Christian should watch.
First off its historically accurate and I appreciate being reminded of how one church in Christendom, was based on money for favours, man made unbiblical 'laws' that for centuries, wreaked havoc on people.
The cardinal noting in the movie that the Bible couldn't be understood by lay people, nor most Priests, because it could only be understood by the Pope himself, shows how misguided and alas corrupt these church leaders were. To suggest Luther was a heretic simply because he challenged his flawed human leaders and the lies they told and taught says alot. Wonder how many Catholics or former ones, or lapsed one like myself, know that until Vatican 2 most Catholics were discouraged from reading the Bible for the same reason as what the Cardinal said.
Was good to be reminded as we need to be, that some churches concoct laws that have no biblical basis whatsoever. And that we as believers need only read the Bible ourselves, have a strong prayer life and trust God to show us the way he would have us go. Wish more people knew of the Lutheran and the Presbyterian church and what wonderful churches they are.
Luther
A wonderful movie on the life of Martin Luther. It's worth watching again and again.
Martin Luther
First saw it in a local theatre here in NYC. Being a Lutheran, not an active church goer, I was impressed with the content of this movie. I bought the DVD, and would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the Lutheran church.
These were Dietrich Bonhoeffer's last words before he was hanged, naked, on a gallows of the evil Nazi regime (sadly, only weeks before his concentration camp was liberated by the Allies in WWII).
This 90 min. 12 chapters DVD is a documentary-styled film about the life and writings of a person called Dietrich Bonhoeffer. (The other reviewers did a good job at presenting his background).
This DVD can be enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians alike.
A legacy of God's grace, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor, theologian, university professor, anti-Nazi conspirator, and martyr who detected early on the evils of a new monster rising amidst his germanic countrymen (Adolf Hitler as Fuehrer, racism as means of national liberation, the deification of state...
