  • DVD Outfoxed - Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism

Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism uses the inflammatory tactics of the Fox News Channel to demonstrate the conservative bias that's handed down by Fox's owner, media mogul Rupert Murdoch. The documentary gathers interviews from media watchdogs and former Fox employees (including a former anchor, Jon Du Pre, who describes his flailing efforts to create a celebration for Reagan's birthday when the one he was sent to cover never materialized), but their overwhelming condemnation of Fox's skewed news practices isn't half as effective as footage taken directly from Fox itself--an appalling montage of pundit Bill O'Reilly telling guests to shut up; repeated efforts to paint Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry as weak and waffling, while President Bush is captured in respectful, reverent images; and management memos dictating language, subject matter, and point of view. Outfoxed is unlikely to persuade Fox News fans to change their views, but it may spur outraged liberals to take action. --Bret Fetzer

I give 3 stars for the material & footage that this documentary brings to the attention of people that may or may not have been exposed to it before. The bias of the makers of this documentary is obvious & about as strong as garlic the next day following an Italian dinner coming out of your pores.

So, the question should be, regardless of bias, is what this documentary true or false? The ridiculous nature in which FOX presents news, and the bias they ooze through the screen is disgusting and in need of exposure...and to that end this documentary is successful. Is it great?..probably not. Is it informative?..yes, depending on how much you already monitor FOX's slant.

Bottomline: if you're extemely familiar with the ineptitude of the media & FOX's sick game they play with the whole "Fair & Balanced" thing...then don't bother buying this DVD...if you think FOX isn't that bad...please view this DVD at any cost.

The FOX Will Guard The Henhouse

We have something in this great country of ours called the Media. It acts as something of a Fourth Estate, after the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of our government. But in recent years, the integrity of that Fourth Estate has been undercut by the agenda of a man named Rupert Murdoch, and a media outlet called the Fox News Channel. And this is at the heart of Robert Greenwald's documentary OUTFOXED, which takes a look at the warping of our media by the first-ever cable news channel to clearly propagate a one-world viewpoint, one slanted very far to the right.

Utilizing interviews with various former employees of the Fox News Channel, which, when it started in 1996, resembled in many ways Ted Turner's CNN at its 1980 start, OUTFOXED shows how Murdoch, who isn't even an American to begin with but was shown to be a fervent admirer of Ronald Reagan, began slowly but surely to undercut the media's ability to report on news stories accurately and with clear thinking in mind. Bit by bit, it grew into a mega-media outlet with the power to influence people big time. In every way possible, it became a television mouthpiece for the far right in America--a perfect example of 24-hour corporate cable fascism, where dissent was tantamount to treason, particularly after 9/11 and when it came to George W. Bush.

Clip after clip after clip, we see the Fox News Channel's all-star lineup of blatant right-wing nutjobs--Bill O'Reilly; Brit Hume; Sean Hannity; Neil Cavuto--scathingly rip apart guests who disagree to any significant extent with them apart, while at the same time promoting their slogans of "Fair And Balanced" and "We Report, You Decide"--slogans which over time have clearly been shown, to say the least, blatantly untruthful. And what is made dreadfully clear, especially in the clips of the FNC's "reporting" during the 2004 presidential election is of their certainity that Bush/Cheney were going to win, complete with the cheerleading.

But apart from all this, OUTFOXED also says that the real sad thing is how other cable outlets have had to somehow use other TV personalities with right-wing proclivities to somehow "outfox" Fox, which is for all intents and purposes impossible. This is a film as every bit as infuriating as FAHRENHEIT 9/11 was, if at a more sober key, and a very tragic commentary on how our system of government has allowed a Fox named Rupert Murdoch, and his cast of right-wingers, to run the henhouse that is the United States of America.

But OUTFOXED also suggests that public outrage can bring about the change needed to stop other Rupert Murdoch types from hijacking America. And that change seems to be slowly but surely taking place even today, making OUTFOXED a chilling and infuriating must-see film.

Not as good as I had hoped

I guess my main complaint about this movie is the whole "oh wow I can't believe Fox does that!" Reaction they're trying to get out of the viewer. Just present the information, no need for ridiculous dramatization of it.

I did give it 2 stars though because there's a few clips I haven't seen before like the apology. It was also interesting to hear from Jeremy Glick too.

Uncovered - The Whole Truth About the Iraq War DVD

The story reimburses some of my earlier reading as well as my opinions based on my own investigations about the war and what lead up to the war. There was a great deal of testimony from many tenured former administration officials that told the real story from their vantage point. I think it gave a lot of credibility to what I had learned prior to seeing the movie. It is a must see for anyone and would open the eyes of some of the people believing our government and especially this administration could do no wrong. More Info about this DVD

    Control Room DVD

Startling and powerful, Control Room is a documentary about the Arab television network Al-Jazeera's coverage of the U.S.-led Iraqi war, and conflicts that arose in managed perceptions of truth between that news media outlet and the American military. Egyptian-American filmmaker Jehane Noujaim (Startup.com) catches the frantic action at Al-Jazeera headquarters as President Bush stipulates his 48-hour, get-out-of-town warning to Saddam Hussein and sons, soon followed by the network's shocking footage of Iraqi civilians terrorized and killed by invading U.S. troops. Al-Jazeera's determination to show images and report details outside the Pentagon's carefully controlled information flow draws the wrath of American officials, who accuse it of being an al-Qaida propagandist. Unconstitutional - The War On Our Civil Liberties DVD

Completing a trilogy that should be required viewing for all Americans, Unconstitutional explicitly reveals how the USA Patriot Act violates numerous civil liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Following the equally persuasive documentaries Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election and Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War, this film presents powerful and tragic examples of how the USA Patriot Act--passed with virtually no Congressional debate just 45 days after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01--has been used to justify the unconstitutional arrest of innocent immigrants based on Arab stereotyping; the illegal detention of vaguely defined "suspects" and their improper treatment (including beatings and torture) during extended confinement; prisoner... Noam Chomsky - Distorted Morality: America's War on Terror? DVD

The hypocrisy of the U.S. government is powerfully scrutinized in Distorted Morality, a scathing thesis presented by renowned scholar Noam Chomsky. Speaking before an intimate audience at Harvard University on February 6, 2002, Chomsky sets fair and logical parameters to his thesis (namely, we are all hypocrites and, for the purposes of debate, the U.S. government should always be given benefit of the doubt) before outlining, with academic precision and citation of real history (as opposed to biased written history), the reasons why America's post-9/11 war on terror is a logical impossibility.

This, according to Chomsky's carefully supported analysis, is because the U.S. government has been, and continues to be, a major supporter of state-supported... More Info about this DVD

    Fahrenheit 9/11 DVD

To anyone who truly understands what it means to be an American, Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 should be seen as a triumph of patriotic freedom. Rarely has the First Amendment been exercised with such fervor and forthrightness of purpose: After subjecting himself to charges of factual errors in his gun-lobby exposé Bowling for Columbine, Moore armed himself with a platoon of reputable fact-checkers, an abundance of indisputable film and video footage, and his own ironically comedic sense of righteous indignation, with the singular intention of toppling the war-ravaged administration of President George W. Bush. It's the Bush presidency that Moore, with his provocative array of facts and figures, blames for corporate corruption, senseless death, unnecessary war,... More Info about this DVD
