  • DVD Taking Lives (Full Screen Edition)

While it doesn't rank with such grim classics as The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, D.J. Caruso's Taking Lives offers similarly heavy atmosphere, beginning well before fizzling into absurdity. Freely adapted from the novel by Michael Pye, and set in Montreal (although it was filmed in Quebec City), the plot trades in several familiar tropes of the serial-killer genre, beginning with the FBI agent (Angelina Jolie) who brings her unique skills (and brooding, low-key demeanor) to the vexing case of a killer who, out of apparent self-loathing, steals the identities of his victims and lives their lives until it's time for the next gruesome murder. Ethan Hawke plays the killer's alleged next victim, and in a film filled with twists that grow increasingly unconvincing, Keifer Sutherland is menacingly cast as a shifty suspect. Caruso's previous film was the creepy drug thriller The Salton Sea, so he's well-qualified to infuse Taking Lives with a darkly stylish sense of dread and at least one good shock to keep your adrenaline flowing. The second half essentially betrays the promise of the first, but there's enough going on to hold your interest to the end. --Jeff Shannon

Review(s): DVD Taking Lives (Full Screen Edition)
    Thriller

This movie is a great thriller for people who don't like to watch scary movies. One of my favorite Angelina Jolie movies.

    Watch only for Angelina

I've been after this movie for a while, but have been put off, by people telling me it's no good, and various bad reviews I've read etc. After a bad day at work, I found it for a very reasonable price, and nabbed it. I'm glad I did now, and was surprised when I didn't get yelled at for buying it :)

This film has a very strange, and very OTT storyline, and not much of it makes sense to a person who only bought the film to see her favourite actress Angelina. I was quite shocked at the start of it to discover, that the wee geeky guy from Girl Next Door, Paul Dano. (Who's quite a nice looking guy when he takes his glasses off.) The film starts with him befriending a guy, and then pushing him in front of a truck. It snowballs from there.

What puzzled me most about this film, is the lack of decent characters in it. OK, Angelina was fabulous as ever, and actually suited her character, of someone who's kinda psychic, and can see what happened to dead people etc. Oliver Martinez & Ethan Hawke were horribly miscast, and just plain horrible too. I just don't find French accents sexy (despite the fact that most of the time he had very little to say in the film), and is it just me, or does anyone else find Ethan Hawke very rat-like? Charming image I know. Kiefer Sutherland I thought suited the role he was in, I've only previously seen his blink-and-you'll-miss-him role in Phone Booth, and he comes across as that kinda guy - suitably creepy. (Haven't seen 24.)

Angelina gets her kit off in this film, so if you want a good look at nearly everything, then guys, you'd better get this film. I dread to think how long she had to spend in makeup for this scene, to cover up her numerous tattoos that she has.

Some say the finale of this film was a let down, to be honest, I didn't think so. Oh my GOD!!! The finale was in your face, and totally unexpected, and I couldn't believe what was happening. It made up for certain other points of the movie lacking, although I did jump out my seat at least 3 times, and screamed cos there are some scenes where you get such a fright.

This is basically a must-see for any Angelina fans. She plays a marvellous part in this, and I did actually enjoy the film, and will definitely watch it again.

    So-So

If you are an Angelina Fan or liked "the Bone Collector" then you will at least want to see this movie. I can't really say it is great and I can't really say it sucks, which is basically what I have to say about "the Bone Collector." I would say rent it before you buy it.

    Original Sin (Unrated Version) DVD

Original Sin belongs in the "so bad it's good" category of languid potboilers, offering enough nudity, sexual chemistry, and far-fetched plotting to make it an enjoyable lazy-day diversion. Based on Cornell Woolrich's novel Waltz into Darkness (previous filmed by François Truffaut as Mississippi Mermaid) and set in turn-of-the-century Cuba, the film traces a tailspin of amorous obsession when coffee plantation owner Luis (Antonio Banderas) discovers that his American mail-order bride (Angelina Jolie) is not the plain wife he'd expected, but a beautiful, scheming thief who's after his fortune. The movie asserts that love is truly blind, but absurd twists of plot make Luis appear more stupid than passionate. Writer-director Michael Cristofer fared better with... More Info about this DVD

    Collateral DVD

Collateral offers a change of pace for Tom Cruise as a ruthless contract killer, but that's just one of many reasons to recommend this well-crafted thriller. It's from Michael Mann, after all, and the director's stellar track record with crime thrillers (Thief, Manhunter, and especially Heat) guarantees a rich combination of intelligent plotting, well-drawn characters, and escalating tension, beginning here when icy hit-man Vincent (Cruise) recruits cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him through a nocturnal tour of Los Angeles, during which he will execute five people in a 10-hour spree. While Stuart Beattie's screenplay deftly combines intimate character study with raw bursts of action (in keeping with Mann's directorial trademark), Foxx does the best work... Gia DVD

There's a reason why Cindy Crawford was dubbed "Baby Gia" when she first hit the modeling scene. Indeed, Crawford, now the world's best-known supermodel, greatly resembled model Gia Carangi, who went from high school to the cover of British Vogue in less than two years. Carangi appeared on many more covers of Vogue (French, British, Italian, and American) and Cosmopolitan before dying of complications from AIDS (she was an IV heroin user) in 1986. Now most people recognize Carangi's name from this powerful HBO film that stars Golden Globe-winner Angelina Jolie, who comes by her talent honestly. Jolie is the daughter of veteran actor Jon Voight, and her own training as a model serves her well--she has the moves. Throughout, she's heartbreaking--as no doubt the real... The Forgotten DVD

With a plot that might've been lifted from The X-Files, nothing is quite what it seems in The Forgotten, a psychological conspiracy thriller with Julianne Moore doing fine work as a grieving mother whose nine-year-old son was killed in a plane crash. At least, that's what she's been led to believe, but when even her husband (Anthony Edwards) tries to convince her that she's delusional and never had a child, things start to get very spooky indeed. Dominic West (from HBO's superb series The Wire) plays a similarly traumatized father, and when they witness some very strange events--and a mysterious man (Linus Roache) who might be indestructible--this glorified B-movie potboiler directed by Joseph Ruben (best known for Dreamscape and The Stepfather)... Twisted (Widescreen Edition) DVD

This movie got a great credential: Ashley Judd, Andy Garcia & Samuel Jackson. The storyline is what you would expect from Hollywood. Ashley's character is a homicide detective. His father was a detective as well, partnered to Samuel Jackson's character but alas, he committed suicide. Her mum was supposedly killed by her father, according to Samuel's character who is now chief to Ashley's character. Anyhow, despite that Ashley's character is a great detective, she is a fallen angel, who has the propensity to be violent to his suspects & she torments herself by sleeping with men of violent temparement. The movie got excited when all the men she slept with died a violent death. It's the case of a serial killer who attempted to outwit the investigators. Andy played Ashley's character's...
