  • DVD The Twilight Zone - The Complete Series

The younger you are, the more you'll enjoy UPN's short-lived revival of The Twilight Zone. Front-loaded with young actors (or marginal celebrities, like Jessica Simpson) and a bone-jarring theme by Korn's Jonathan Davis, the show panders to a teen demographic, which original-series creator Rod Serling would never have tolerated. It's a pale copy of Serling's original, and even the 1985 TZ revival was marginally better, but there are some memorable exceptions in this 43-episode, six-disc set. Not surprisingly, the best episodes are straight remakes of (or sequels to) classic Serling originals, including "The Monsters on Maple Street," "It's Still a Good Life" (with former child actor Bill Mumy reprising his creepiest role, and featuring a series-best performance by Cloris Leachman), and "Eye of the Beholder." Of the originals to this series, highlights include the pilot episode with Jeremy Piven; Jason Alexander in "One Night at Mercy," Amber Tamblyn in "Evergreen"; Lukas Haas in "Harsh Mistress"; Lou Diamond Phillips in "The Pool Guy"; ER's Eriq La Salle as writer, director, and star of "Memphis"; and a few others that capture the eerie quality of "another dimension of sight, sound, and mind."

Woefully miscast as the series' host, Forest Whitaker delivers facile introductions devoid of Serling's literary finesse. More often than not, the writing relies on forgettable characters and thinly-disguised variations on original-series themes; at its worst, the series demonstrates a staggering lack of originality, and the youthful casting frequently results in one-dimensional performances, with a few notable exceptions. It's hit-or-miss at best, but shooting locations in Vancouver, British Columbia, lend the series a visually stimulating variety of settings and atmosphere; production values are consistently high (as they were in the Canadian seasons of X-Files), and Rick Maguire deserves praise for his cinematography on virtually every episode. If you can forget Serling altogether (a difficult challenge for his devoted fans), you'll be able to overlook the flaws and enjoy some occasionally clever trips into The Twilight Zone as it was meant to be. --Jeff Shannon

Review(s): DVD The Twilight Zone - The Complete Series
    Where's the Racism?

This DVD set is a steal at $15.00. What's the gripe with Forrest Whitaker as host? Who cares. He is only there for a few seconds. Does this really mean that much to the veiwer? I particularly could care less about his perspective of each episode. In the end,I have already drawn my own conclusion to the events that had occured in each episode before he even shows his face...regardless who the narrator may be. From what I have seen so far, the episodes are excellent. The original series is lame to say the least. The original series endings are so *predictable* and to *common*. The endings in the original series leaves one feeling like "So what"!

There were remarks by reviewers about racism. I don't get it? Someone not letting a Black person into their car constitutes racism??? Would one be happier if the driver were also black...and how do you know he wasn't. I do not remember seeing this driver let the black characters white buddy in the car. Sounds to me like some viewers out there have a "Chip on their shoulder". You read to much into things. Get over it!

    Take care, Wayne

For the price, it's a steal

The newest TZ is not as bad as some people suggest. It had some compelling episodes with the Serlingesque twists at the ends, and some others that were not so good at all. The worst decision of all was having Forrest Whitaker as the host. Terrible selection in my mind. I could have come up with a better selection in 5 minutes. Christopher Walken would have been worlds better, IMO. Anyhoo, you get like 43 episodes in this collection. At $18, that's quite alot of entertainment (I paid like $40 when it first came out!!!). My 5 star rating is based mostly on the number of episodes that you're getting for $18. After watching it all, I'm sure you'll consider it money well spent. The collection is handsomely bound in an attractive jacket. It features an anamorphic display with surround sound, for those of us that have a home theater. I'd say that out of the 43 tales, nearly 1/3 to a half of them are pretty good. Of course there are some duds as well. I'll be honest; I'm an original Zoner so when this show was on the air, I never watched it. I was too biased, I guess. But it is a fun departure, as long as you don't compare it to the original Zone. That was an amazing show, and there's just no way to beat Rod Serling and company.

Its 2002, get with the times..

I noticed that some people dint like this show & i can see why, cuz its new, its not the original.. the original series was cancelled a long time ago & people should be glad there are people out there tryin to ressurect the show. I for one saw this when UPN aired it & it started out pretty good, i did miss the 'racist' episode & i think if a black or a white guy were to run up to me sayin hes' being chased.. in this day in age i wouldnt let any1 i dint know in my car. Chances are they are runnin from the police anyways. Either way i think people judge too much when it comes to these type of things. If this show was done in the 60's people would love it, but now people are basing everything on acting, script writing.. its just crazy i think this series would have done well if people werent like that. If anything this show is much like the Xfiles without Mulder & Scully, plus the music was written by Mark Snow, the same person who did the Xfiles music. In my opinion this show is far better then the cr*p i see on tv now. But i guess thats all what people would rather watch. Its a shame this show dint last very long.

    The Twilight Zone - Season 1 (1985 - 1986) DVD

I saw season one by accident and was really expecting the worst. In many ways my expectations were fulfilled, but I just love it... Not even in a 'so bad it's good' kind of way, because many of the episodes are well-done, compelling and intelligent, but it's so... 80's, so badly acted and campy with horrible music. There's a charm to it though, and it's very enjoyable. I find that maybe 50% of the episodes work. The last few discs just scream 'filler,' but for the most part the stories are very efficient, only 20-30 minutes to tell a story and within the first minute it has to draw you in. In that regard it's very interesting to watch how they're made to suck you in. Usually characters and situations are established and within 30 seconds you know every character and what to expect. Some... More Info about this DVD

    The Twilight Zone - Seasons 2 & 3 (1986 - 1988) DVD

I love the twilight Zone episodes. Prior to purchasing seasons1-3 of the 1985-1988 series of the Twilight Zone, I vaguely remember these episodes. After watching each one, there were some of the episodes that I liked and some that I didn't. I must admit that the remake of Night of the Meek was not as moving as the orginal version. The Twilight Zone - Season 1 (The Definitive Edition) DVD

Submitted for your approval: The Twilight Zone's inaugural season, all 36 episodes complete with Rod Serling's original promos for the following week's episode, not seen since their original broadcast. To discuss television's greatest anthology series whose title has become pop culture shorthand for the bizarre and supernatural is to immediately become like Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd in Twilight Zone: The Movie; a can-you-top-this recall of famous shocks and favorite twists. Several essential episodes hail from this season, among them, "Time Enough at Last" starring Burgess Meredith as a bespectacled bookworm who is the lone survivor of an atomic blast; "The After-Hours" starring Anne Francis as a department store shopper haunted by mannequins; and the profoundly... Tales from the Crypt - The Complete First Season DVD

Here's some grisly good news for fear fans: the first season of HBO's long-running TV horror anthology Tales from the Crypt, based on the notorious '50s-era E.C. comic books, emerges on DVD in a two-disc set that's sure to have 'em shrieking (with joy, of course). Shepherded by a host of top Hollywood producers and directors (including Joel Silver, Richard Donner, Robert Zemeckis, and Walter Hill), the Tales from the Crypt series brought together major talent both in front of and behind the camera to give life to E.C.'s over-the-top stories of gruesome revenge and ghastly terror. Season 1 offers six star-studded spooktaculars, including Donner's "Dig That Cat… He's Real Gone," with The Sopranos' Joe Pantoliano as a carnival performer with a knack for surviving... The Twilight Zone - Season 2 (The Definitive Edition) DVD

The middle ground between light and shadow just became a whole lot sharper and detailed with this stellar five-disc set, which compiles the entire second season of Rod Serling's classic television series, The Twilight Zone, and gilds the whole package by including a treasure trove of supplemental material. TZ's second season (1960-61) is a stand-out in the series' history thanks to its sheer number of memorable stories; among the episodes that have achieved pop culture landmark status are the chilling "Eye of the Beholder" (a disfigured woman undergoes surgery to appear more "normal") and "The Silence" (Franchot Tone wagers that Liam Sullivan cannot silent for a year); "The Invaders" (Agnes Moorhead is pitted against tiny space travelers), "Long Distance Call"...
