Review(s): DVD My Baby Can Talk - First Signs
nicely done, engaging, but poor choice of words

I agree with the other reviewers about the limited selection of USEFUL words. The tutorial does advise you to pick only four signs and use them over and over again when the dvd is off. But it also says to play the dvd at least 4X a week. I just don't see how words like, "dinosaur" and "horse" would fit into everyday life, at least not in an urban area in the 21st century. "Eat," "more" and "drink" are about the most useful signs in the dvd, with the runner-up being "book." I was surprised "nap" and "potty" wasn't included - wouldn't it be a DREAM if your child can tell you when he/she needs a nap or go potty???

    An addendum to my review...

After reading many of the reviews for this DVD, I've seen a lot of people commenting on the lack of certain words like "please", "thank you", etc. I would like to point out that this video is designed for infants and young toddlers -- their first words are almost always nouns..."doggie", "kitty", and THINGS in their world that they like. Introducing the concept of signing please & thank you at this age is inappropriate. Any parent who is hard-of-hearing or has experience signing to their child will tell you that they learn signs for THINGS (nouns)first. I have been learning & using ASL since I was a teenager, and my daughters have been signed to since birth...in complete concepts (sentences)...and their first signs were "dog" and "fish" because those were the things they liked. One of my girls is JUST NOW getting the concept, at 18 months, that the sign "please" has something to do with wanting something. In summary, just enjoy teaching your infant nouns and basic wants ("more")...and leave "please" & "thank you" for when they are ready to understand it. :-)

    A New Favorite!

I've been signing to my twin daughters since birth. They are now 18 months old and are learning signs so quickly! This is their new favorite sign language video. They are starting to sign along, and they laugh at all the fun things they see. It is very well produced -- timed well for toddlers with bright colors and lots of happy faces to look at. The signs are all ASL, which is very important to me, and they are all excellent basic signs that babies use every day. I highly recommend this video! I can't wait for new ones! I'm sure they will be even better!

Signing Time! Vol. 1: My First Signs DVD DVD

I was so surprised to see any negative reviews on the Signing Times series that I wanted to write a comment. This is the first of an amazing series of videos that are educational, heartfelt, entertaining and amazingly impactful for a family wanting to teach their infant sign language. I highly recommend Signing Times, and am in fact online now to buy this volume as a gift for another family who would like to start their baby signing. More Info about this DVD

Baby Babble - Speech-Enhancing DVD for Babies and Toddlers DVD

I bought this DVD for my 20 month old son four months ago who had some "catching" up to do linguistically. I was playing the DVD everyday, since it kept my son's attention for at least 15 minutes! I was skeptical at first, not having any expectations from the program. However, the speech pathologists on the DVD knew exactly what they were doing! Clever productions, attention grabber sounds, eye-catching facial expression, and good intro of signing. Needless to say, my son started to REPEAT, SIGN, and APPLY the sounds/words he heard to everyday life! The first time I heard him say & sign "MORE" for more food, I was amazed! Highly Recommended! Signing Time! Volume 2: Playtime Signs DVD

For those of you considering purchase, it should say something that all the 23 reviews but one have received five stars, and that other one was four stars.

This is an outstanding series. My two and a half year old son enjoys signing, and I want him to be able to teach his 4 month old sister to sign when she's ready. Check out their website, as they have two NEW VIDEOS specifically for babies. The first six are geared more for 12-36 months, I'd say.

Each film is very engaging and engrossing. My son signs along with all the words and songs, and he uses them frequently. Though he speaks a lot, he signs while he speaks, the same way people use their hands when they speak; he's just signing. My mother-in-law teaches sign and grew up with deaf parents. It is a...
