DVD Tess (Special Edition)
Roman Polanski adapted Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles and came up with this moody, haunting film starring Nastassia Kinski as the farm girl who is misused by the aristocrat for whom she works and who is then caught in a marriage where her initial happiness soon turns to grief. Fans of the novel may feel unpersuaded by Polanski's effort to marry Hardy's Dorset vision with his own fascination with psychosexual impulses toward survival, but the film is an often stunning thing to see, and Kinski's sensitive, intelligent performance lingers in the memory. --Tom Keogh
The film gets 5 stars. The transfer to DVD is a disgrace. Nobody bothered to restore the negative and all the scratches and lines have (unfortunately) been transfered to the DVD! The transfer is so sloppy that various images in the film are "jumpy" and move up and down. Additionally, the music soundtrack has been altered. The most glaring example is at the very end when the closing credits start to roll. The music cues have been changed and do not match the original theatrical release or an older laser disc I once owned. For most people, my complaits will seem trivial, but those who love this film will understand my anger.
My Favorite Movie
I'm so glad this version of Tess has come out!!! This is my all time favorite movie...love the story, the acting, the cinematography! Just hope in the future they'll make a better DVD of it.
Another Polanski's jewel!
Few years after the painful personal tragedy of this gifted director, he decided to materialize this sad love story with a wonderful photography, an unforgettable soundtrack, an astonishing cast and a slow paced but perfectly articulated script.
As all we know the everlasting prejudices and moral conventions do not belong to a specific country, religious beliefs, or citizenship. These rules remain in the unconscious collective, if you just want an supported evidence, go for Effie Briest in Germany and Madame Bovary in France.
These portraits are not more than the final result of a consequence of the inability to get the true culmination inside the individual sphere of the triumph of love between the couple, this failure has its more important testimony in the King Artur's legend and this seems a remarkable point because this is simply the most important myth of the Western World.
This film meant to the endless beauty Natasha Kinski to be known.

No one does tragedies as well as Thomas Hardy, and this new BBC production of his 1891 novel is a peach. Tess is a teenager captured between happiness with an educated man (Oliver Milburn) and a dreadful existence with a scheming aristocrat (Jason Flemyng). Compared to Roman Polanski's 1980 Oscar-winning film Tess, the BBC version is far more interested in Hardy's text than in directorial exportations. Hence, the famous strawberry scene in which the aristocrat seduces the young Tess is just long enough to plumb the emotions; Polanski's version made the scene into a miniature classic of innocence and seduction. Both versions are worth seeing.

One of Roman Polanski's more overt comedies, this 1966 monster spectacle stars Jack MacGowran and Polanski as a clunky but heroic pair of vampire killers. Called upon to rescue the beautiful and buxom daughter (Sharon Tate) of an innkeeper from a Draculalike bloodsucker, the duo muddle through all sorts of scrapes, the most intense being a scene in which a room full of dancing vampires realize the human interlopers are the only ones in the room who are reflected in a mirror. Scary and funny, the film has some unforgettable set pieces, a terrific score, one of the few records of Tate's extraordinary beauty, and vibrant performances.
