  • DVD Roswell - The Complete Second Season

Season 2 of the cult science-fiction series Roswell opens on a promisingly positive note, with the rescue of alien teen Michael (Brendan Fehr) by Max (Jason Behr) and his pals, but as soon as things settled down, new challenges threaten their existence. That was par for the course on this imaginative program, which hit its stride in its sophomore year (2000-2001) with a tighter blend of thoughtful youth drama and otherworldly action. The season's chief threats to aliens Max, Michael, Isabel (Katherine Heigl of Grey's Anatomy), and newcomer Tess (Emilie De Ravin of Lost), and Earthlings Liz (Shiri Appleby), Maria (Majandra Delfino), and Alex (Colin Hanks) are Vanessa Whitaker (Gretchen Egolf), a congresswoman with a very sinister secret agenda, and Brody Davis (Desmond Askew), the new curator of Roswell's UFO Museum, who harbors an equally unpleasant plan for the friends. The struggle between human and alien forces, both good and evil, to uncover the truth about Max and his companions leads to a pair of shocking events--a death among the group, and in the season finale, Max, Michael, and Isabel's possible return to their home planet. Other highlights from season 2 include the imaginative period piece "Summer of '47," with the series regulars assuming the roles of townspeople and government officials at the time of the original alleged UFO crash; the two-parter "Meet the Dupes" and "Max in the City," which poses the alien quartet against their physically identical doubles (with extremely different personalities); and "A Roswell Christmas Carol," which offers an unsentimental retake on the Dickens story.

As with the first-season set, supplemental features are surprisingly abundant for a relatively minor show; commentary is included on three of the 21 episodes (two by executive producer Ron Moore), while the featurette "Here with Me" has the writers, producers, and cast offering their opinions on the season. There's also another installment of the "Shiri and Majandra Show," with more lighthearted reminiscences from the actresses, as well as two additional featurettes on the program's score and the process of transforming a storyboarded scene into filmed action. A five-minute montage of clips set to music called "A Little Something Extra for the Fans" is the lightest of all the extras (and fans should note that many of the music cues featured in the original broadcasts have been replaced in this set), but Roswell aficionados will undoubtedly be happy with everything they get. --Paul Gaita

Review(s): DVD Roswell - The Complete Second Season
    Cry for the missing song

The series kind of changed direction near the end of the first season. Season 2 continues that change by concentrating a little more on sci-fi elements. Overall this is still a strong season, but I think the move worked to the shoe's detriment. And there are a couple of really weak episodes here, especially "Meet the Dupes" and "Max in the City". Yikes! On the other hand, there are some great ones, too, particularly "The End of the World," "A Roswell Christmas Carol," and "Cry Your Name."

Speaking of which, others have commented on the changes in music due to licensing issues. If you're a newcomer to the series, that probably won't make a difference to you except for one instance. The episode "Cry Your Name" was titled after a haunting song by Beth Orton. Ron Moore talks at length during the commentary track of that episode about how much he liked the song and why it's so important to the episode. This may leave you scratching your head since the song was replaced with one that completely fails to capture the right mood. Though I'm not pleased by many of the other song changes to the DVDs, in my opinion, this substitution is unforgivable.

The widescreen transfers look great, and the 5.1 sound, though not aggressive, is a welcomed addition to a TV show release. Other than some very good commentary tracks, especially by Mr. Moore, the extra features are pretty forgettable.

I like this show a lot more than it deserves, I think. Non-Roswellians may watch this and think, "What's the big deal?" The second season is not a good starting point for new viewers, but I would recommend this series and this set to anyone who has watched and enjoyed the first season or who is in high school or romanticizes the experience.

The unexpected multi-item discount made a great price even better.

just as addictive as the first season

Once you've seen the first season, you have to watch the second as well. The cast was chosen well and the story will engross you.

Roswell - The Complete Third Season (The Final Chapter) DVD

The sci-fi-themed teen drama Roswell begins its third and final season with Max (Jason Behr) and Liz (Shiri Appleby) back together and taking a desperate chance to find Max's son. After the many cosmic concepts of the previous season, the series dialed back the mythology to focus on the more--excuse the expression--human aspects of the characters. Roswell was often described as Dawson's Creek meets The X-Files, and accordingly Isabel (Katherine Heigl) finds romance with a lawyer (Adam Rodriguez), but struggles both with her mixed feelings about revealing her alien identity and with the aftermath of the tragedy in season 2. (The romance is later spoofed in a Bewitched-style episode.) At the same time, Max and Michael (Brendan Fehr) travel to Los... More Info about this DVD

Roswell - The Complete First Season DVD

Opening with a Dido theme song and featuring character-driven, sweet-natured melodrama, Roswell was a show with a surprisingly dedicated fandom, who twice won it reprieve from cancellation. One of its main strengths was, of course, the extent to which its premise--alien teenagers trying to sort out their identities while emotionally involved with their human contemporaries--was a free-floating metaphor for race and sexuality issues. Another was the strong ensemble that its cast developed: you believed in the strangeness of the alien trio and the well-intentioned normality of their three human friends. Jason Behr gave the alien Max a quiet authority and Majendra Delfino took the sidekick role of Maria and gave it both intensity and fine comic timing. It was also a show in which... Angel - Season Five DVD

Lives were upended--and some co-opted--in the fifth and final season of Angel, as the denizens of Angel Investigations found themselves taking on one of their scariest endeavors ever: corporate life. After making a literal deal with the devil (or something distinctly devil-like), Angel (David Boreanaz) moved his team from their crumbling hotel to the high-rise digs of law-firm-from-hell Wolfram & Hart, his reasoning being they could better fight the forces of evil from the inside, and with more resources to boot. Clever maneuvering or easy rationalization? Not a few members of Angel's team accused him of selling out (as did a number of viewers), but as with most of the show's previous four seasons, Angel somehow took a dubious premise and mined it for gold. And with one core... More Info about this DVD

Smallville - The Complete Third Season DVD

Truth, identity, and responsibility are the cornerstones of Smallville's exceptional third season. When viewers left Clark (Tom Welling) at the end of season 2, he was feeling his oats in Metropolis with the help of a red Kryptonite ring, but by the opening of season 3, he must return to Smallville to not only help his parents save their farm, but seek some resolution in his relationships with Lana (Kristin Kreuk) and Lex (Michael Rosenbaum), who's returned from his abandonment at the conclusion of the previous season. Lex himself must deal with some shocking revelations regarding his relationship with his sinister father Lionel (John Glover, magnetic as always), and Lana becomes involved with a new figure in town, the mysterious Adam Knight (Lost's Ian Somerholder), who may... Tru Calling - The Complete Second Season DVD

Tru Calling is one of my favorite shows. I had thought the show as back when the second season began. But, it only had a few episodes. Only six were made for this season and only five were aired. This set is the only way to see that last episode. Also, this set has a making of featurette.
