  • DVD Around the World in 80 Days (Widescreen Edition)

The 2004 version of Around the World in 80 Days is an entertaining hodge-podge of adventure, comedy, and scenery from across the globe. Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan, 24 Hour Party People), an obsessively precise inventor, bets that he can circumnavigate the planet in 80 days--considered impossible in the Victorian era. In this version, Jackie Chan plays a Chinese peasant who retrieves a stolen idol from the Bank of England, then convinces Fogg to hire him as a French valet so that Chan can get back to his village. Chan supplies numerous spectacular fights against the forces trying to stop Fogg or get the idol, while Coogan is both funny and a surprisingly appealing romantic lead (he flirts with a fetching French painter who joins them). The various episodes--featuring cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese, Owen Wilson, and Sammo Hung--are uneven, but a goofy good cheer prevails. --Bret Fetzer

Review(s): DVD Around the World in 80 Days (Widescreen Edition)
    Nice Action, Boring Story

I hesitated getting this movie after reading some of the reviews, turns out the reviews were right. The original story is fascinating and exciting, if you enjoy reading. This movie only vaguely follows the book, frittering away its great potential while thoroughly boring this viewer. Jackie Chan's fight scenes are good, which provided me an opportunity to stop snoring enough to watch a bit of the movie. I have not viewed the old classic with David Niven, but just might since this movie was a complete (almost, thanks to Jackie) waste of time and electricity.

    TAILOR MADE RETREAD

This Disney version of Jules Verne's classic tale is not really a remake of the classic 50s film which featured David Niven. Instead, it is a retread made to suit the talents of Jackie Chan, who plays Passepourte as a Chinese bankrobber, a good thief though as he is stealing back a sacred Jade Buddha which was stolen from his village. Chan joins up with inventor Phileas Fogg (played with little relish by Steve Coogan) and a lovely artist (Cecile De France) in a quest to make it around the globe in 80 days as a bet with a nefarious academy curator (a devilishly fiendish Jim Broadbent). The movie has some fun set pieces and some lovely near animated segues into the various locales. It also features some clever cameos from soon to be governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Macy Gray, Kathy Bates, John Cleese and Luke and Owen Wilson. The movie didn't live up to the boxoffice expectations and is considered one of the biggest independently made flops in recent history. But it is passably enjoyable entertainment; a stronger actor than Coogan might have made it more enjoyable, however.

I don't usually agree with the critics but...

Just watched this movie and saddly that is 2 hours of my life I will never get back again.

I really enjoy Jackie Chan as an actor, but I have NO idea why he elected to act in this movie.

This movie attempts the recent sucess of remaking classic movies into 'modern-day' tales and capatilazing on people wanting to watch their favorite actors.

This movie is tedious and often blunders through guest appearances and trys to forcefeed the plot line down our throats.

If you are looking for a couple light laughs that will fill two hours... find it somewhere else...

    National Treasure (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code, it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer... I, Robot (Widescreen Edition) DVD

As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in I, Robot. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; I, Robot, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks.... Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Widescreen Special Collector's Edition) DVD

While setting a milestone in the progress of digital filmmaking, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow resurrects a nostalgic fantasy world derived from a wide variety of vintage inspirations. It's a dazzling dream for anyone who appreciates the look and feel of golden-age sci-fi pulp magazines, drawing its unique, all-digital design from such diverse sources as Howard Hawks adventures, Fritz Lang's Metropolis, Buck Rogers, Blackhawk comics, The Third Man, cliffhanger serials, and the action-packed Indiana Jones franchise. Writer-director Kerry Conran's feature debut is also guaranteed to inspire digital dreamers everywhere, suggesting a paradigm shift in the way CGI-dominated movies are made. Shark Tale (Widescreen Edition) DVD

When a shark accidentally clobbers himself, a small fish named Oscar (voiced by Will Smith, I, Robot) just happens to be around, prompting everyone to believe that he killed the shark himself. This lie soon makes Oscar a celebrity, worshipped by the general mass of fish, wooed by a glittering golddigger (Angelina Jolie, Girl, Interrupted), missed by his best friend (Renee Zellweger, Cold Mountain)--and hunted by the godfather of great whites (Robert De Niro, Goodfellas). Can a vegetarian shark named Lenny (Jack Black, School of Rock) get Oscar out of this mess? The formulaic story of Shark Tale never reaches the giddy heights of Pixar's output (Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Toy Story) or the freewheeling comedy of Shrek,... More Info about this DVD

    Collateral DVD

Collateral offers a change of pace for Tom Cruise as a ruthless contract killer, but that's just one of many reasons to recommend this well-crafted thriller. It's from Michael Mann, after all, and the director's stellar track record with crime thrillers (Thief, Manhunter, and especially Heat) guarantees a rich combination of intelligent plotting, well-drawn characters, and escalating tension, beginning here when icy hit-man Vincent (Cruise) recruits cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him through a nocturnal tour of Los Angeles, during which he will execute five people in a 10-hour spree. While Stuart Beattie's screenplay deftly combines intimate character study with raw bursts of action (in keeping with Mann's directorial trademark), Foxx does the best work...
