Despite the presence of hack director Arthur Hiller, this hybrid comedy-thriller works most of the time as pleasant faux Hitchcock. Gene Wilder is a book editor who is relaxing by taking a cross-country train ride. Then he gets caught up in a murder--and becomes a suspect. It's up to him to prove his own innocence. As noted, the script, by Colin Higgins, owes a big debt to Alfred Hitchcock; but the mystery isn't all that mysterious and the comedy isn't all that hilarious--at least not until Richard Pryor shows up, which is at least halfway through the film. Things definitely pick up from there. Jill Clayburgh, as the love interest, is merely along for the train ride. Wilder and Pryor eventually teamed up for several other films, but they were never as funny together as they are in this one. --Marshall Fine
I first watched the movie Silver Streak on the AMC cable channel and I thought it was very entertaining. I loved the blend of mystery and suspense with comedy and I enjoyed the acting from Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor and Jill Clayburg. I'm so glad to see that this movie has finally been put on DVD and I willad it to my list of DVDs to buy!
The film moves along smoothly , keeping you guessing
This film catches Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as a great double act , with great support from Jill Clayburgh .
It does owe something to Hitchcock's style in a very good way , but the humor is a bit more way out . The characters find themselves in desperate situations but are able to adapt well and the viewer shares in the tension .
Gene Wilder plays wound up people very well .
This comedy is involving and highlights a great script together with a very effective cast .
A little seen gem . Buy the film and enjoy the ride .
70's movie
It was a good movie of a classic train ride with a murder mystery, and the black guy was cool.
Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. Sidney Poitier directed--without much distinction, sorry to say--this 1980 comedy teaming Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as New York knuckleheads who try their luck in California and are accused of robbing a bank. Most of the laughs concern their survival strategies in prison (at one point, Wilder decides to "reach out and talk" to some hulking murderer) and their plans to escape. I've seen this film five times since it was first released.
As I grow in age and watch this movie, I feel almost robbed that I wasn't either around, or old enough to appreciate the pure genius that both Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor held.
This film is about a blind man (played wonderfully by Richard Pryor) who's down on his luck and in need of a job. Luckily for him, a deaf newsstand owner (played with all the comic gusto he can muster by Gene Wilder) happens to be hiring.
Pryor owes a bookie big time, and when the bookie comes looking for him at his new place of employment, chaos ensues because he's murdered. Just the name "Orient Express" conjures images of a bygone era. Add an all-star cast (including Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Jacqueline Bisset, and Lauren Bacall, to name a few) and Agatha Christie's delicious plot and how can you go wrong? Particularly if you add in Albert Finney as Christie's delightfully persnickety sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Someone has knocked off nasty Richard Widmark on this train trip and, to Poirot's puzzlement, everyone seems to have a motive--just the setup for a terrific whodunit.
