  • DVD Rambo:First Blood Ultimate Edition

It's easy to forget that this Spartan, violent film, which begat the Rambo series, was such a big hit in 1982 because it was a good movie. Green Beret vet John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) wanders into the wrong small town to find a fellow 'Nam buddy and gets the living heck kicked out of him by the local law enforcement (led by Brian Dennehy). The vet strikes back the only way he knows how, leading to a visceral, if unrealistic, flight and fight through the local mountains. Based on the 1972 novel by David Morrell, this film saved Stallone's then-foundering career and the Rambo character became the inspiration for countless political cartoons. But this film is Deliverance without the moral ambiguity. --Keith Simanton

    Rambo: a one man war!

Chances are you've heard of John Rambo. But, if you were living under a rock or born in the past couple years, you might not be aware of him. Rambo was an action adventure character that made his first appearance in this film, FIRST BLOOD. But, beyond his screen appearances, Rambo has become a part of the world's pop culture. From cartoons to video games or from playground activity to Presidential speeches, John is there.

The film introduces John as a Viet Nam vet who has outlived everyone from his battalion. And after another empty reunion in the Pacific Northwest, Sherrif Will Teasle mistreats him. He is hassled and arrested by Teasle's men but when they unintentionally dig out Viet Nam memories, John escapes to the mountains. Everyone, including the National Guard pursues him but now they are on John's territory, all of his guerrilla warfare training is put to use. The only hope for the town comes with the arrival of Rambo's commanding officer, Colonel Samuel Trautman. What was once a peaceful little town quickly becomes a war zone...

Sylester Stallone created the role of Rambo and it is easily one of his best roles. Rambo is physically adept while speech is usually monosyllabic. This role requires a lot of stunt work and it is apparent that Stallone did much of his own impressive work. Brian Dennehy plays the power hungry sheriff that just doesn't know when to quit. Dennehy is wonderfully hateable always ready to flash his grin, a grin you'd want to wipe off his face. Richard Crenna plays Trautman whose role is limited to plot exposition and one final scene as a father figure to John. In the novel the film was based on, Trautman kills Rambo at the end. But, that would not allow for sequels! Rambo would appear in two more films to date, both of a different tone then this dark offering. FIRST BLOOD is a great action film that launched a new genre.

This Special Edition DVD has an amazing audio transfer. The DTS can challenge even the best sound systems! Also, the widescreen video transfer is crisp and beautiful, capturing the Pacific Northwest (Actually filmed in Canada). There is a new documentary looking back twenty years to the stories creation as well as a running commentary. These are both welcome additions, but they don't carry the power of the film. This DVD was also made available in the Rambo Trilogy boxset.

    ''THEY DREW FIRST BLOOD...NOT ME''

    ROLLING THUNDER on steroids,

Believe it or not but when this was first released it was seen (at least by me, even tho I was only 13)as being ANTI-WAR and totally anti-establishment.The character of John Rambo was a recognizable distant cousin to Travis Bickle from TAXI DRIVER or Charles Rane from ROLLING THUNDER: an ex-soldier used to meaningless death, lost in the streets of his own empty freedom; without much reason or purpose to his life; a man who had escaped the war alive but with little else intact; in short, he was tragic.

I believe the character of Rambo dies in the book and is more clearly INSANE. The fact that the character went on to become some sort of disgusting, cartoon-version of an invincible super-soldier says more about greed and Sly Stallone's out of control ego than it does about the validity of the original character's message: WAR is HELL and just because you made it back from a WAR does not mean you are ALIVE.

If someone in connection with this film had had the courage to fight for a better script ( i smell Sly's ego ballooning--demanding his pathetic "explanation" at the end)this film could've been a major piece of work, like TAXI DRIVER, instead of the idiot redneck wet dream that it became. Odd, considering all of the enemies of Rambo in FIRST BLOOD are either Redneck cops or Redneck National guardsmen. Had this film been made in 1972 when the book was first published, i believe the zeitgeist would have sustained a far different impression of the film itself and the character of Rambo. i guess people are just stupid, as well as blind. FIRST BLOOD has a lot to recommend it but first you have to disassociate yourself from what RAMBO later became: a joke and an insult to anyone who ever had their lives touched by the insanity of WAR.

Rambo - First Blood Part II (Special Edition) DVD

After Rocky and its sequels, Sylvester Stallone cast about for another character that would bring him the same kind of box-office hit--and found it in disillusioned Vietnam vet John Rambo in First Blood, a solid little action thriller. So when all else failed, Stallone went back to the same well in hopes of recapturing the same commercial success. Which this film did. But where First Blood was a no-nonsense thriller that pitted Stallone against a worthy (and not necessarily bad) Brian Dennehy, this one is a sadistic chest-thumper in which Rambo gets to go back to Vietnam: ostensibly, he's there to rescue missing POWs, but in fact the movie was a lame excuse for him to refight the Vietnam War--and win. Audiences ate up the cruel Vietcong (and their Russian... More Info about this DVD

    Rambo III (Special Edition) DVD

Rambo III is the prime example of the perfect action movie. Instead of the countless James Bond's where sex is the only thing on his mind, or the terrible John Woo action we see in laughable movies like Face/Off and Mission: Impossible 2. Rambo's are far more concentrated, it takes all of its action (And superb action it is) and focuses it right where it wants it so this movie does not become an over-blown piece of trash action movie like The Rock. Stallone is perfect in the Rambo role and displays awesome physical action to where we believe he is a one man war-machine, the story plays itself out well, ditching its Vietnam protest in the first two and giving something new with plenty of explosions and action to satisfy any movie buff. Its amazing to see a movie that is deemed by so many... More Info about this DVD

    Predator (Widescreen Collector's Edition) DVD

Rambo meets Alien in this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it... More Info about this DVD

    The Terminator DVD

This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne Hurley More Info about this DVD

    Rambo III:Ultimate Edition DVD

Rambo 3 is usually regarded as the weakest in the series. However, I love this film, simply because Stallone plays a borderline superhero better than anyone else. How many other men can combine such a powerful physical presense with so much force of character? While the real-life Stallone is certainly not as virtuous as Rambo, he is known to have incredible willpower and determination. These qualities dominate his portrayal of John Rambo. You look into this man's eyes and you simply cannot imagine him being small or petty. He is reminiscent of Harry Callahan in that regard. Whatever his limitations may be, his integrity and courage are beyond question. In addition, Stallone is so devoted to the discipline of bodybuilding that he has actually managed to create a distinctive look for... More Info about this DVD
