DVD Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy Giftset (Widescreen Unrated Edition & Wake Up, Ron Burgundy)
Will Farrell followed up his star-making vehicle Elf, which matched his fine-tuned comic obliviousness to a sweet sincerity, with a more arrogant variation on the same character: Ron Burgundy, a macho, narcissistic news anchor from the 1970s. Along with his news posse--roving reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd, Clueless), sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), and dim-bulb weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell, Bruce Almighty)--Burgundy rules the roost in San Diego, fawned upon by groupies and supported by a weary producer (Fred Willard, Best In Show) who tolerates Burgundy's ego because of good ratings. But when Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate, View from the Top) arrives with ambitions to become an anchor herself, she threatens the male-dominated newsroom. Anchorman has plenty of funny material, but it's as if Farrell couldn't decide what he really wanted to mock, and so took smart-ass cracks at everything in sight. Still, there are moments of inspired delirium. --Bret Fetzer
Review(s): DVD Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy Giftset (Widescreen Unrated Edition & Wake Up, Ron Burgundy)
Why can't I give it zero stars?
Okay, I don't know. Maybe I just don't get the so called "subtle humor" of this movie. I did not find anything even remotely funny about it. I don't even think there was a real plot behind this movie. It was just random events with no real meaning. It's definitely not an intelligent movie. The overall experience of watching this movie was somewhere between being annoyed and being bored. The summary of the movie would have to be "A two hour sexual harassment joke".
Bananas
This thing is outrageous.
If you enjoy outlandish "Animal House" funny, then you have no choice but to check this thing out. It is a ludicrous movie about ridiculous people. If that is not your thing, then ignore it. But, if you do decide to have a look, your taste in comedy just might change.
The plot is an easy one. Will Ferrell is Ron Burgundy - a hotshot news reporter in the 1970's. Back when they smoked on air and drank booze before their broadcasts. All of a sudden, the company he works for wants to put a woman on the air as his co-anchor. That's when the place just flips and what happens later is more hilarity, more fun and a whole lot more stupidity.
This thing is basically made up with Ben Stiller's "good friend crew." Every now and then, you will see a movie with Ben, Luke and Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and as occasional as Will, Tim Robbins. They arer easily using their clout in Hollywood to make sure they are always on top, always casting each other and always making sure the movies they make don't suck. That would mess up their little plan. But, I have to admit, when they are together, it is awesome. There is a fight in a parking lot with Ron and his foes (played by Will's good friends) and it is the most insane part of the film. Truthfully, when the guest star cuts off the other guest star's arm without even thinking about it and then immediately SMOKES HIS PIPE while the war continues...that stuff is hard to write. It must have been ad libbed.
Another thing about this movie is how things have changed over the years. I have worked in television for 12 years and to hear Ron Burgundy say thanks to the technical crew after the show is a rarity. It almost NEVER, NEVER, NEVER HAPPENS, when the crew makes these people, all the way from the production writing to the tech crew doing the good cameras. Twice Ron does this and it is a lost art. There is no "thanks.
The film is 1970's sexist and if you cannot deal with that, then move on. Seriously.
The movie is the movie, but since this is the DVD unrated version, let's get to it.
I cannot kid you. They really worked hard at putting this thing together. For us. There really is no reason to put so much content into a DVD unless you are 1) proud of what never made it or 2) trying to give more to the fans. That's what I love and this video pays in spades.
The DELETED SCENES are great. Sometimes I wonder why some of these crazy things never made it to air. It must have been for time reasons. There is, like, a 3 second scene when Ron sees his father. It's really funny even thought it's nothing. But, I liked it. Some of the other stuff HAD TO GO no matter how funny.
The BLOOPERS are cool too. No more than what you would see elsewhere. But they are always funny. But that is just half the story. This is not the movie you saw at the theatre. This thing is unrated for a reason. Keep looking!
There is also a "funnier than you would think" music video of "Afternoon Delight," starring the cast of the film.
I love this movie. It is so stupid and so fun. They are not even trying to make sense sometimes and I love that about them. Awesome.
And the most important aspect of this thing is that I loved Christina Applegate on "Married With Children." But these guys were so guy-oriented with their script that they almost never give Christina winning lines. Almost NEVER. She is a wasted talent, a natural comic who has proven herself to be useful early in her career. I am STILL waiting for the movie that makes use of her hotness AND acting talent! Other actresses get to do this, why not her? ---unless there are some inside figures that I know nothing about. That's when I shut up and let Hollywood be Hollywood.
P.S.....STEVE CARRELL is amazing. He is so funny in this film, you will lose your mind. Talk about a guy making a career for himself! he is INCREDIBLY FUNNY! Look for him as the star of EVAN ALMIGHTY....the seqeul to BRUCE ALMIGHTY. And if u saw BRUCE, then you know the scene that made his career. It's worth renting just for that.. Perfection on film.
Pleasantly Surprised!
After seeing such harch critiscm of Anchorman, my expectations of this comedy were mighty low. But it is exactly those low expectations that led me to enjoy this movie.
Sure...a lot of the jokes most any dunce could understand, but that's one of the points that makes Anchorman so enojyable and accesible. While it's not a comdey classic, it is a entertaining time to spend when you have a few hours to spare.
The plot focuses around the Channel 4 News studio and the hijinks that occur after a woman is hired as a correspondant. The leading News Anchor Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is quickly smitten with the new newswoman. And hilarity ensues.
The character that produces the biggest laughs would have to be Brick, played by Steve Carrell. Will Ferrell deffinitly has his moments as well.
While a few of the jokes are lame and don't get across, most of it is simple, harmless, and fun. If you are looking for something with a little more depth, this probably is not for you. Though, if you are looking for a light movie to raise your spirits, this is worth a try.

How's this for impressive trivia: Dodgeball faced off against The Terminal in opening-weekend competition, and 29-year-old writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber aced Steven Spielberg by a score of $30 to $18.7 in box-office millions. That's no mean feat for a newcomer, but Thurber's lowbrow script and rapid-fire direction--along with a sublime cast of screen comedians--proved to be just what moviegoers were ravenous for: a consistently hilarious, patently formulaic romp in which the underdog owner of Average Joe's Gym (Vince Vaughn) faces foreclosure unless he can raise $50,000 in 30 days. The solution: A dodgeball tournament offering $50K to the winners, in which Vaughn and his nerdy clientele team up against the preening, abhorrently narcissistic owner (Ben Stiller) of... As deadpan comedies go, Napoleon Dynamite stands in a class all its own. Played by John Heder, the title character is (in the words of critic Roger Ebert) "the kind of nerd other nerds avoid," a mouth-breathing dweeb with a mangy nest of orange hair, and ungainly features that suggest a perpetual state of half-conscious depression. He lives in Preston, Idaho (former home of 24-year-old director Jared Hess) with his thrill-seeking grandma and 32-year-old brother, and his days at high school consist mostly of being abused or ignored by indifferent classmates. Napoleon's sad-sack story doesn't offer the scathing, impassioned humor of Welcome to the Dollhouse because Hess (who cowrote the nearly plotless screenplay with his wife, Jerusha) doesn't have an angst-ridden axe to... Zach Braff (from the TV show Scrubs) stars in his writing/directing debut, Garden State--normally a doomed act of hubris, but Braff pulls it off with unassuming charm. An emotionally numb actor in L.A., Andrew (Braff) comes back to New Jersey after nine years away for his mother's funeral. Andrew avoids his bitter father (Ian Holm, The Sweet Hereafter) and joins old friends (including the superb Peter Sarsgaard, Boys Don't Cry) in a round of parties. Along the way he meets a girl (Natalie Portman, Beautiful Girls) with demons of her own; bit by bit the two offer each other a little healing. Plotwise, Garden State is familiar stuff, a cross between The Graduate and a Meg Ryan movie, but Braff has an eye for goofy but resonant visual images,... After creating the last great traditionally animated film of the 20th century, The Iron Giant, filmmaker Brad Bird joined top-drawer studio Pixar to create this exciting, completely entertaining computer-animated film. Bird gives us a family of "supers," a brood of five with special powers desperately trying to fit in with the 9-to-5 suburban lifestyle. Of course, in a more innocent world, Bob and Helen Parr were superheroes, Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. But blasted lawsuits and public disapproval forced them and other supers to go incognito, making it even tougher for their school-age kids, the shy Violet and the aptly named Dash. When a stranger named Mirage (voiced by Elizabeth Pena) secretly recruits Bob for a potential mission, the old glory days spin in his head, even if... Collateral offers a change of pace for Tom Cruise as a ruthless contract killer, but that's just one of many reasons to recommend this well-crafted thriller. It's from Michael Mann, after all, and the director's stellar track record with crime thrillers (Thief, Manhunter, and especially Heat) guarantees a rich combination of intelligent plotting, well-drawn characters, and escalating tension, beginning here when icy hit-man Vincent (Cruise) recruits cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him through a nocturnal tour of Los Angeles, during which he will execute five people in a 10-hour spree. While Stuart Beattie's screenplay deftly combines intimate character study with raw bursts of action (in keeping with Mann's directorial trademark), Foxx does the best work...
