Well Done Account of an Important Historical Event
"Raid on Entebbee" was released shortly after are more hastily released version recounting these events came out -- "Victory on Entebbee." It" is hard to say which version is better (I like them both). I suppose this is simply a matter of taste.
This version of the audacious rescue of hostages held when highjackers working for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine boarded and high-jacked an Air France plane stopped in Athens, enroute to Paris from Tel-Aviv, recounts accurately the events and response of the Israeli government to another example of the outrageous terror war being perpetrated against Israel (and now many other countries). It is fast moving, action packed, and has an excellent musical score. Peter Finch stars as Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin, with Charles Bronson portraying General Dan Shomron.
This version, as the previous one, show the difficult Israel Cabinet deliberations held to decide on a top-secret military raid on the Jewish Sabbath, by expert commandos; a difficult and daring operation carried out over 2500 miles from home, rather than give into terrorist demands. The outcome, of course, is well known, with only one commando killed (the operation commander Jonathan Netanyahu, brother of Prime Minister in waiting Benjamin Netayahu), a very small number of hostages, and several several soldiers under the then dictator of Uganda, Idi Amin". Well done and interesting docu-drama that treads the line between true history and historical fiction. Highly recommended to lift the spirits of anyone looking for an actual historical victory over the terrorists.
Amazing event portrayed in not such an amazing film
The raid of Entebbe became famous as a very successful strike against an act of terrorism. Israeli soldiers did an amazing thing when they managed to fly to Uganda and save 100 hostages.
I must admit I am a little bit disappointed with this film. I feel that such an exciting story and outstanding deed could have been portrayed in a much better way.
I feel that the film seldom touches a nerve and that it becomes a little bit dull.
Movie is GREAT! - the DVD is horrible!
All I can say is that it is too bad this is how this excellent movie is treated. I highly recommend the movie and have been waiting a long time for it to be released as a DVD. However, the other reviewer is correct, they did a terrible job of recording this movie onto DVD. The quality is worse than a bad reception TV broadcast and scenes have been cut out! The quality of this DVD is as if someone recorded it on VHS from TV and then copied it onto DVDs in their garage! It is truly lousy work. Again, the movie is excellent and if it were to come out in a DVD format made from the original movie reels, with widescreen as an option, I would still buy a copy. Don't waste your money on this one. The VHS might be better, but you'd get just as much satisfaction if you recorded it off of TV!
This film is a fictionalized account of the story of (one of) the Mossad teams which was sent globetrotting in pursuit of the Black September terrorists who massacred 11 Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village of the 1972 Munich Olympic games.
By fictionalized, I mean that the team members and the exact methods and locations for the assassinations probably do NOT match reality. The factual elements in the film are the Munich massacre, Golda Meir's directive to hunt the terrorists down, the names of the main Black September members involved, etc.
The film deals with the struggle to maintain sanity and humanity while fighting against those who lack decent amounts of each. The film is quite effective in showing the unbearable tension these men deal with in their jobs and how... Mixing action, humor, sentiment, and even a few righteous moral convictions, The Wild Geese is good, rousing fun. Released theatrically in 1978 (oddly, this 2005 DVD release is referred to as the "30th Anniversary Edition"), director Andrew V. McLaglens film depicts the adventures of a group of British mercenaries hired by a shady multinational corporation to free the benevolent leader of an African nation held captive by a ruthless dictator. Led by the caustic, no-nonsense Col. Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton), these soldiers of fortune are all stout fellows out to earn a big payday and restore a good man to his rightful place of power (the underlying message of universal racial brotherhood is effective, if somewhat simplistic), and they do their job swiftly and...
