If you're a ten-year-old girl, this sequel to Disney's 2001 hit will completely transfix you. How could it not? Bubbly Mia (Anne Hathaway), the American teenager who in the first film learned she was actually European royalty, finishes college and--whoosh!--heads off to Genovia, where he's given a closet full of fabulous clothes and jewelry in preparation to rule the kingdom under the tutelage of grandmother Julie Andrews. Throw in a horse and a volatile but innocent romantic attraction to the dreamy young stud (Chris Pine) who's also vying for the throne, and you have the kind of stuff that prepubescent girls rhapsodize about at slumber parties. Oh--and there's a slumber party here, too, featuring a bevy of cute, international young princesses mattress-surfing down a giant slide. Resistance is futile. For the rest of us, though, director Garry Marshall has managed to make his Laverne & Shirley days seem positively Shakespearean in comparison. The movie is precious, padded (two hours!), and pandering twaddle; Andrews, in her role as Queen Mother, is even shoehorned into a faux-hip-hop duet with Disney Channel favorite Raven (one of many, many grueling moments intended to sell the soundtrack). Then the film takes a maddening left turn three-quarters of the way into the plot and decides that, despite all the preceding consumption and connubial fantasies to the contrary, it's really about feminine emancipation. But don’t worry--what causes you to smack your forehead in frustration will go right over the heads of its hypnotized target market. --Steve Wiecking

I am a huge fan of princesses and fairy tales. I saw princess diaries 1 and 2 and loved them both. If you love fairy tales and princesses you will love this movie.

I am a HUGE fan of princesses (and angels). I saw Princess Diaries 1 and 2. I LOVE them BOTH!!!!! I especially like the part in number 2 where they sing Breakaway. That is one of my favorite songs! I love Mia's personality and I love the Princess Diaries series. I hope a number 3 comes out soon.

In the original "Princess Diaries," San Francisco teen Mia Thermopolis discovered, just like every other red-blooded American girl, that she was next-in-line to the throne of a fictional country called Genovia - a virtually all-white kingdom (with a perpetually happy citizenry) that looks as if it had been lifted straight out of a book of fairy tales all done up in modern dress. Now, five years later, Mia is about to turn 21, the age at which she will finally be eligible to assume her rightful place as queen of the country. However, there turns out to be a royal fly in the ointment, for the law stipulates that she must have a king to accompany her to the throne. Thus, Mia must find and fall in love with a man within thirty days or forego her title as queen to the nephew of a conniving, power hungry viscount who is determined to get the scepter for himself.
Burdened with a dopey premise that even the lamest sitcom would reject as hopeless, "Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" is an inane, mind-numbing white bread fantasy that galumphs along at a tedious pace and wastes the talents of Ann Hathaway and Julie Andrews into the bargain. I can't imagine that even the most sheltered schoolgirl will be enchanted by the clumsy plot contrivances, tepid wit and low grade slapstick that are the hallmarks of this film. Among its many other faults, "Princess Diaries 2" endorses an elitist view of benevolent monarchy - in which servants stand in the hot sun holding umbrellas for royalty - that is rather dismaying in the 21st Century.
It's fun seeing Julie Andrews playing the Henry Higgins to Anne Hathaway's Eliza Doolittle for a change, but that momentary pleasure hardly compensates for the ordeal of sitting through the rest of the film.
If the people who made this film were truly being honest, they would have titled it "Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Pain in the ___."

If you are one of Hilary Duff's most ardent pre-teen fans, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in A Cinderella Story, but everyone else should proceed with caution. It's an updated fairy tale for the age of instant messaging, which is how Sam (Duff) develops a crush on Austin (Chad Michael Murray) before realizing that this Tennyson-quoting poet-at-heart is actually her San Fernando Valley high school's star quarterback and most desirable hunk.
