  • DVD Cameron Shayne - Budokon for Beginners

The cover touts it as "the reunion of martial arts, yoga, and meditation," but for those who have practiced those disciplines separately but not in combination, Cameron Shayne's Budokon Beginning Practice offers a fresh, even unique approach to a home exercise regimen. Yoga, martial arts, and meditation don't actually commingle in this approximately 38-minute program (also included is a version that's about 10 minutes shorter); a fairly traditional, 20-minute yoga practice (for creating "power through stillness") is followed by 15 minutes of martial arts ("power through movement") and about three minutes of meditation ("power through emptiness"). The yoga asanas, including forward bends, lunges, twists, standing poses, and several sun salutations, provide a good stretch and warm-up for the martial arts moves; the latter, with their short, vigorous punches and kicks mostly performed from a traditional "fighting stance," offer a contrast to the slower, deeper yoga postures, and the sequence of the two is genuinely invigorating. Shayne, a martial arts master who also knows his yoga, provides excellent instruction throughout, and easier versions of the yoga poses are demonstrated. There's also a "pose guide" option, accessible both separately and during the workout, to explicate all the poses and movements in greater detail. --Sam Graham

Review(s): DVD Cameron Shayne - Budokon for Beginners
    Budokan rocks

I have always been a big fan of budokan since the Cheap Trick live album at Budokan is one of my favorites. I especially like when Robin Zander kicks off "I want you to want me". Ok, I like Cheap Trick, that has been established onto this DVD. I guess it's a combination of yoga, karate and meditation. I really have no interest in yoga because one, I'm not that flexible and two, I just think of a little green jedi knight when I think of yoda. I'm not really big on meditation either. My mind rules as it is. I don't have to sit and mumble stuff to myself while standing on my head facing Fremont. What I bought this for was the sweet Karate Action. What a disappointment. The guy beats up absolutely no one in this video. I was expecting a demonstration on sweeping the knee and got nothing. This dork wouldn't have won his first match at the all valley karate tournament. I learned nothing to supplement my off the charts martial arts skillz. I'm pretty much a white and incredibly good looking version of Jackie Chan. You are corky from the wonder years.

    too complicated demonstration too confusing

I felt the demonstration was way too complicated, by the time I got it figured out I didn't even want to do it.

    Great Workout

This might be a bit difficult for people who have never done yoga before and they might give up easily. As with any workout it takes dedication and sticking to it. Otherwise the instructions are great.

Bryan Kest Power Yoga Complete Collection DVD

Anyone wanting to get in shape like the stars need go no further than Bryan Kest's home-video workouts. Kest teaches wildly popular yoga classes in Santa Monica, California--so popular that stars like Rhea Perlman, David Duchovny, and Elisabeth Shue willingly sweat alongside the hoi polloi in Kest's packed, ancient loft studio. If you don't happen to be in the neighborhood, not to worry: Kest's yoga videos are nearly as good as being there. Volume 1, Energize, is a beginner-level class that nonetheless is smartly designed to provide challenges for all levels of users. Kest's Jersey-boy voice at first seems in contrast to the serene environment and inner-peace objectives, but it gradually becomes soothing and hypnotic in its own right. Stretches and strengthening moves are... More Info about this DVD

    Iron Yoga DVD

I do yoga several times a week, and this dvd is pretty challenging. You use weights the entire time through all the movements, and it moves slowly, so you feel the burn! If you like more faster moving power yoga, this is probably not for you, but you can always increase your weights and make it burn some more!! More Info about this DVD

Shiva Rea - Yoga Shakti DVD

Comprehensive but user-friendly, reasonably challenging but accessible to a variety of levels, Yoga Shakti is inarguably one of the best yoga products on the market--no small achievement when one considers just how many of them there are. Instructor-creator Shiva Rea, a California-based yogi of considerable international renown, specializes in vinyasa yoga (a vinyasa is essentially a series of flowing, connected poses, incorporating breath and movement and cultivating heat, strength, flexibility, and balance). Four complete practices are presented, ranging in length from 42 to 85 minutes and including Basic Flow (for beginners), two more vigorous Solar Flow sequences, and a Lunar Flow sequence falling somewhere in the middle in terms of degree of difficulty; familiar... Qigong Beginning Practice DVD

My Oriental Medicine doctor reccomended that I do QiGong to "build up my chi". I was hopeful but skeptical about the extent to which my chi would be built up. When I first viewed the video Qigong Beginning Practice, I thought that the exercises looked relaxing but not very energizing. But I am compelled to say that after a few days of doing this video in the morning I have begun to see quite a drastic change in my energy level. I already notice that I have more warmth and circulation in my body and I feel ready to jump right out of bed when I wake up in the morning! My husband is impressed at the new increase in my energy and vigour. I also notice that my breathing is becoming fuller and deeper and I feel an overall sense of refreshing vitality. I have practiced yoga for many years and I... More Info about this DVD
