DVD Love's Enduring Promise
Set in a frontier world of bonnets and one-room schoolhouses, Love's Enduring Promise follows a headstrong young teacher named Missie (January Jones, Bandits), the daughter of Clark and Marty Davis (Dale Midkiff and Katherine Heigl) from previous prairie romance Love Comes Softly. After Clark injures himself in a woodcutting accident, the family farm is in danger of failing--until a handsome young stranger (Logan Bartholomew) helps out. Missie finds herself drawn to this man, but the intelligence and graciousness of young railroad magnate (Mackenzie Austin, How to Deal) appeals to a side of her that yearns to go beyond the hills and valleys of her childhood. What could be romantic froth becomes a quiet, well-paced, and thoughtful love story, thanks to a solid script, capable performances, and clean direction. Jones is particularly engaging; Missie could have been blandly virtuous, but Jones draws a rich and subtle range of emotions out of her scenes. Religious viewers will appreciate the movie's commitment to wholesome storytelling and clear moral perspective. Love's Enduring Promise, like Love Comes Softly, is based on a novel by Christian writer Janet Oke, though Love's Enduring Promise departs more from its source. --Bret Fetzer
I loved all the Janet Oke books, and now I so far I have watched all the movies. I have even ordered the new one that is coming out in January 07. All of Janet Oke movies are tremendously good clean family movies.
A Wholesome Movie to Own
Yes, this movie did not follow the books. Many people were angry that the movies weren't accurate. I can understand, but I have to write that it is an excellent movie to own anyway. It is very wholesome and it is hard to find quality wholesome movies in this day and age.
This movie is a joke!
I enjoyed reaching all of the books in this series, but I'm sorry to say I can't say the same for the movies. "Love Comes Softly" wasn't an exact duplicate of the corresponding book but at least the basic storyline was right for the most part. "Love's Enduring Promise" concentrated on about 5 pages' worth of the entire book, and even screwed that up. "Nathan Willie LaHaye"??? Hello.....Nathan was Willie's OLDER brother, and he did NOT have a little brother named Mattie who froze to death - his OLDER SISTER died in childbirth after marrying the schoolteacher (BEFORE Missie was old enough to teach school in the first place)! In the book, Grant Thomas was only "present" in the story when he asked Missie's mother if he could take her for a drive, and was never heard from again except when Missie asked her mother how she could tell him she only wanted to be friends. Furthermore, Grant was the son of a local businessman, NOT a railroad heir. I realize that all moviemakers use poetic license, but ruining a perfectly good story to create an unbelieveable one is STUPID!

Writer/director Michael Landon Jr. continues in his famous father's footsteps by creating moral family entertainment set in the early days of the American prairie. Stubborn Marty Claridge (Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy) travels west with her new husband--but after they find a beautiful patch of land, her husband dies in an accident before they've even started building. A man named Clark (Dale Midkiff, Air Bud: World Pup) makes a proposal: If Marty will enter into a platonic marriage with him, he'll pay for her passage back east in the spring. What Clark needs is a mother, however temporary, for his willful tomboy daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak, Beyond the Prairie, Part 2). Missie fights Marty's presence fiercely while Clark, though supportive, speaks few... I went with some friends to watch this movie in theaters after already seeing the other three. It was an excellant addition to the series!!! All the actors do their parts beautifully! The storyline is much different than the books but still flows great! There was no sex, language, or anything bad like you usually find in modern movies. Great for the whole family! A++!! I just love this movie. I saw it first on the Hallmark Channel when I was channel surfing, then I purchased the DVD. Each time I've watched it, I find I like it more and more. However, I would have loved to have seen more story/character development and a little more romance, perhaps even a wedding between Tyler & Jordan (reason for 4 & not 5 stars). For instance, the scene outside the barn after Tyler has turned away & ran from Jordan, he says ".. I never expected this" It's not clear at first exactly what it is he wasn't expecting. You realize later that he never expected to fall in love with her. Would be great if a sequel follows!??? More Info about this DVD Director(s): David S.
