Can a vegetarian shark named Lenny (Jack Black, School of Rock) get Oscar out of this mess? The formulaic story of Shark Tale never reaches the giddy heights of Pixar's output (Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Toy Story) or the freewheeling comedy of Shrek, but it's capably told and impeccably animated--the sheer technical skill is stunning. entertaining and funny
Shark tale is one of those animated movies that is colorful, entertaining but no exactly groundbreaking. However, the movie itself has emotion and gives a good moral message to kids.
Though the movie itself may be geared towards kids and young adults, it still gives the adults who have seen the GODFATHER, GOOD FELLAS, etc. something to laugh about.
Personally, I liked it. I thought it was funny. The cast led by Robert de Niro, Will Smith, Renee Zelweger and Jolie delivered an outstanding performance, even though the plot itself isn't too deep, the characters blend well. The visuals are stunning, and there are some scenes that are hokey but it had its entertaining moments.
It is still worth a watch if you like comedies you don't have to think about so much and just want a good laugh. It pales in comparison to TOY STORY, SHREK, THE INCREDIBLES or MONSTERS INC. but it is still good entertainment for the family. I think it is better than ROBOTS and on par with ICE AGE. I will not mention FINDING NEMO because I thought that movie is a bit over-rated but visually speaking it surpasses SHARK TALE. For Good quick laughs, Shark Tale is good but forgettable.
It is still worth a look.
Buy this if you're a clueless, apathetic parent
I'm trying to figure out how to "lose" this DVD without my children figuring it out. In fact, they are probably watching it for the last time as I write this! Oh, don't worry, they've got movies to last them for years. I don't see any reason to keep this cultural gem around, though. Even the brilliant comedic stylings of Will Smith can't justify what's wrong with this movie.
So, why is this going in the garbage, you ask? It's totally inappropriate for young kids, who I assume is the target audience. As stated eloquently in a previous review, there are so many things here kids don't need to see, mob hits and ghetto violence topping the list. The electrocuting jellyfish goons sent out to execute the main character come to mind. Is this supposed to be cute? Think about the message that sends to your kids.
Call me a bit of an extremist but I don't think trashing (or at least shelving) your copy of 'Shark Tale' would be the worst idea you had all day. Think about it.

Jamie Foxx's uncannily accurate performance isn't the only good thing about Ray. Riding high on a wave of Oscar buzz, Foxx proved himself worthy of all the hype by portraying blind R&B legend Ray Charles in a warts-and-all performance that Charles approved shortly before his death in June 2004. Despite a few dramatic embellishments of actual incidents (such as the suggestion that the accidental drowning of Charles's younger brother caused all the inner demons that Charles would battle into adulthood), the film does a remarkable job of summarizing Charles's strengths as a musical innovator and his weaknesses as a philandering heroin addict who recorded some of his best songs while flying high as a kite. Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness.
