DVD Being Julia
Annette Bening's outstanding performance is the best reason to see Being Julia, a highly melodramatic adaptation of the 1937 novel Theatre by W. Somerset Maugham. With a prestigious pedigree (director Istvan Szabo and screenwriter Ronald Harwood share impressive theatrical backgrounds) and a stellar cast including Jeremy Irons, Bruce Greenwood, and Juliet Stevenson, the film's backstage and onstage theatrics take place in pre-World War II London, when the venerable actress Julia (Bening) fends off middle-age by romancing a stage-struck young American (Shaun Evans) in a calculated attempt to retain some youthful vitality while airing her own dirty laundry onstage in a glorious act of divine diva behavior. Treating life and theater as one big play in which she's the perpetual star, Julia's nothing if not a master thespian, and Bening's got all the chops to keep her in the spotlight. If the film isn't quite worthy of Bening's excellence, at least it gives her performance the showcase it deserves. -- Jeff Shannon
Outstanding period piece based on W. Somerset Maugham's novel "Theatre", BEING JULIA features the luminous Annette Bening in the title role with a fine support cast. The story concerns the reigning actress of the British stage, Julia Lambert, who enjoys a very modern relationship with her husband/director/manager Michael Gosselyn (Jeremy Irons). When her personal life hits a stalemate, she enjoys a fling with a young American fan, Tom (Shaun Evans), though when she discovers he's also seeing a featherbrained young actress called Avice Crichton (Lucy Punch) with designs on stealing her limelight, Julia concocts her delicious revenge.
BEING JULIA is deftly-directed by Istvan Szabo, and also features Miriam Margolyes, Juliet Stevenson, Rosemary Harris, Rita Tushingham, Michael Gambon and Leigh Lawson. A supremely-entertaining gem. The DVD also features audio commentary with Szabo, Bening and Irons; deleted scenes; behind-the-scenes footage and a `Making Of' featurette.

Istvan Szabo's 1938-set film has a mesmerizing lead in Annette Bening, playing a burned-out star of the London stage who doesn't know what she wants out of life anymore. The period detail gives the film a Masterpiece Theatre touch, but the material is more volatile. The perennial theme of successful performers with miserable lives (first put on film in BROADWAY MELODY [1929], the second best-picture Oscar winner), works as well as ever, while ending on a more upbeat note than usual. Szabo, the classy Hungarian director who won an Oscar for MEPHISTO (best foreign film), gives this film a look and depth it would otherwise not have had; he knows how to exploit the close-up shot to its full effect. The younger players in the cast are particularly good, holding their own against experienced performers. Recommended, especially after a hard week when you want to relax and enjoy a film.
Sweetness that doesn't turn saccharine is hard to find these days; Finding Neverland hits the mark. Much credit is due to the actors: Johnny Depp applies his genius for sly whimsy in his portrayal of playwright J. M. Barrie, who finds inspiration for his greatest creation from four lively boys, the sons of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet, who miraculously fuses romantic yearning with common sense). Though the friendship threatens his already dwindling marriage, Barrie spends endless hours with the boys, pretending to be pirates or Indians--and gradually the elements of Peter Pan take shape in his mind.
