Originally I rented this movie with the intent to provide my husband with a movie that he'd probably enjoy watching. Something other than a "chick flick."
I wasn't expecting that I would enjoy this movie much but to my pleasant suprise, found myself thinking that this is a movie worthy to be in a dvd collection. I would consider this movie a cross between a comedy and drama (issues of life, death and relationships) but definately more on the side of comedy.
As for the comical aspects, I would think this type of comedy would appeal more to the down-to-earth individual, who has an understanding of and appreciation for this kind of life (rural) and the people within these types of communities.
As a side-note, I think this movie will also appeal to law enforcement. Particularly those who work in similiar, rural communities.
Definately a movie that I felt "right at home" watching. I, for one, wish there were movies out there- just like this one. Here's hoping for a Wooly Boys II! ;-)
A good story
This is a good story wonderfully done in a great setting - the shots of western North Dakota are stunning.
To a simple sketch
I think this movie was good for the family. It's annoying how people try to pull apart a movie from their own narrow view. For goodness sake don't disect movies, try to enjoy the movie as a regular human would!
Deliverance goes to high school in this grim, stripped-down fable of a prank gone bad. Friends decide to teach a lesson to a teenage bully by inviting him on a canoeing trip where they will humiliate him once and for all. The prank turns seriously sour, and the kids must deal with the consequences. Writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes takes a somber look at these lives, although his low-key approach makes the central tragedy seem melodramatic when it happens. The film isn't quite new enough to be truly revelatory, but Estes neatly avoids a River's Edge rehash by allowing his characters more than dead-eyed anomie. The actors hit their notes with precision, especially Rory Culkin (another of the Culkin family, with Macaulay and Kieran), Ryan Kelley, and Scott Mechlowicz. This is... Ok, I'll admit it. I didn't know a thing about this movie when I brought it home. I noticed that Jim Caviezel was in it, so I just grabbed it off the shelf. My kids were reluctant to view it with me, mainly because they had their heart set on watching some "smart-alecky" movie. As we started viewing the film, we realized that it was a great story, with a great cast. "An Absolute Treasure" - that's what I call this film. It touches the heart, mind, and soul. David's unbreakable spirit and haunting, expressive face will stay with me for a long time. The dazed, dreamlike world of director David Gordon Green remains intact, although Undertow has more story than his previous gems (All the Real Girls, George Washington). In the hot, green Georgia countryside, a man (Dermot Mulroney) lives with his two sons on a farm; their existence is shattered by the arrival of the man's Faulknerian brother (Josh Lucas), a dangerous sort with an ulterior motive. The movie that follows is like The Night of the Hunter filtered through a Days of Heaven lens--there's even a Heaven-like narration provided by Jamie Bell. That's what you get for having Terrence Malick produce your movie. The plot doesn't always sit comfortably with Green's uncanny style--sometimes it feels like an intrusion on a private world of... This movie shows a panorama of awful events in Poland during the nazi occupation of WWII. It demonstrates the evil acts of the nazis and the terrible effects they have on the Pols and their behavior toward each other.
The religious aspects of the film are strange and lacking in depth or quality.
The only reason I can think of to watch this is to be reminded of how terribly humans can act toward each other. More Info about this DVD Director(s): Yurek Bogayevicz DVD Release Date: Released the 04 January 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours
