As directed by Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast) and dimly lit by cinematographer Harris Savides, Birth is a melancholy chamber piece, its pensive mood sustained by nearly sub-sonic nuances in a fine, thematically developed score by Alexandre Desplat. All of these fine qualities are well-matched by the somber performance of Nicole Kidman, playing a still-grieving widow of 10 years, about to remarry when a 10-year-old boy (Cameron Bright) arrives to announce that he is her dead husband, reincarnated and full of convincing answers to personal marital questions. Rather than go for Sixth Sense-like chills and thrills, Glazer approaches Birth as a conundrum with no clear-cut solution, and his directorial style is so subdued, so deliberately understated, that most of the story's dramatic impact is sacrificed to oppressively dour atmosphere. If it doesn't lull you to sleep, Birth might hold your attention as a strange, subtle thriller in miniature scale. With its delicate, mature approach to the processes of grieving and recovery, however, Birth rewards attentive viewers attuned to the film's ultra-low-key wavelength, and it's guaranteed to provoke interesting post-movie discussions. Somewhere in the film entitled Birth, there is a charming feminine desire to accept the mystic power which promises eternal love. A woman has lost her husband and somehow after a ten year period, a small boy appears proclaiming he is the reincarnated soul of her deceased husband. The premise is palatable and the acting is brought to the point of acceptability, with the talents of Nicole Kidman and Lauren Becall. However, during the film one becomes aware that something beyond credulity is being glossed over. The age of the two individuals. The older woman eventually accepts her late husband's spirit in the form of the young boy and therein lies the problem. Even if it's accepted that an older woman could in fact love a little boy, the fact of the matter is, if the roles were reversed, and it was an adult man and a ten year old girl in the bathtub, women's groups from one side of the country to the other would be screeching at the top of their lungs that this film is nothing short of child molestation! So before you praise the overall romance of the film, consider what implications are being accepted. **

does nicole kidman ever do anything other than crappy movies?
her script choices and sometimes even her acting are disgraceful. the bathtub scene in this movie was unnecessary and in poor taste.
An exploration of subjectivity.
Kidman is as powerful in this as she always is. She plays the role of a widow engaged to someone new when a boy appears in her life claiming to be the reincarnation of her dead husband. The plot has some good twists and turns and there is a dark uneasiness throughout the film. The sensuality between Kidman and the boy is disturbing but not over done and the director has walked a very fine line there and done it well. The often over-used backdrop of New York and Central Park is captured quite beautifully here and amost features as a character more than a backdrop which is a nice touch. The final feeling is certainly one of how we see what we want to see and a stark reminded that our own objective reality often has nothing at all to do with reality outside of us.
