Style trumps substance in Man on Fire, a slick, brooding reunion of Crimson Tide star Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott. The ominous, crime-ridden setting is Mexico City, where a dour, alcoholic warrior with a mysterious Black Ops past (Washington) seeks redemption as the devoted bodyguard of a lovable 9-year-old girl (the precociously gifted Dakota Fanning), then responds with predictable fury when she is kidnapped and presumably killed. Prolific screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, L.A. Confidential) sets a solid emotional foundation for Washington's tormented character, and Scott's stylistic excess compensates for a distended plot that's both repellently violent and viscerally absorbing. Among Scott's more distracting techniques is the use of free-roaming, comic-bookish subtitles... even when they're unnecessary! Adapted from a novel by A.J. Quinnell and previously filmed as a 1987 vehicle for Scott Glenn, Man on Fire is roughly on par with Scott's similar 1990 film Revenge, efficiently satisfying Washington's incendiary bloodlust under a heavy blanket of humid, doom-laden atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon

Forgiveness is between them and god... I just arrange the meeting

Denzel never seems to fail when starring in a movie and this one is no different. This is a must see movie. From the start to finish action packed movie. It has a lot of dramatic scenes in it so it may disturb some people when watching it. So keep that in mind before buying or renting it.

    Powerful, brutally violent drama...

Denzel Washington's portrayal of John Creasy, former CIA Black OPX's ultimate rampage in pursuit of justice, vengeance and spiritual Redemption is one of the most shockingly powerful PM dramas filmed. MAN on FIRE is not...as an inane blurb on the jacket proclaims..."Action-Packed Adventure!" It is a terrifying story of incredible love and courage amid Judas-like betrayals and ultimate corruption. The superbly believable and heart-breaking performance by "child"-star DAKOTA FANNING--as Guadalupe Ramos, blue-eyed guerroita to the max, daughter of a Mexican businessman--who is kidnapped for $10 M ransom lifts what might be merely another joltingly violent variation on TRAFFIC to a study of a lonely man battling to win back his lost soul by SELLING it one final time in harrowing descent into Hell for sake of this innocent girl's life.

Director Tony Scott film is long(2&1/2 hours).First half deals with the caring relationship of Washington for his young charge-as-Body Guard(Fanning/Lupita's incipient hero-worship;and a tremendously effective sequence where Creasy becomes her championship-winning swimming coach, training her "not to fear the sound of the STARTER'S GUN"). The second half is staggeringly violent odyssey where...like the elite soldier he was/is... he hunts-down and kills (mercilessly;without compunction)the Professional Terrorists who have killed his little buddy.

MAN ON FIRE is no"Training Day" retread(where Washington played punk-hood Cop on the down-low take, in this vastly over rated Home-boy ghetto-blaster flick). It is rather the kind of pornographically violent LOVE STORY our jaded PMer's ironically accept. Ensemble cast...including Christopher Walken and Mickey Rourke...comprise virtual Host of warrior angels vs devil's legion in Armageddon-like battle against the Culture of Death and its(whore-corps)Professionals. The scene is set in a Mexico of Dante's NINE CIRCLES where children are sacrificed to Moloch for "fun;profit and adventure" in cabal of gangsters;yuppies and pimp/pederasts-pretending-to-be-businessmen. The film is ultimately about ULTIMATE EVIL being confronted by the only thing Evil understands. This movie of "Cry havoc!" vengeance and the "greater Love has no man than he who lays down his life for a friend" is neither family entertainment nor glorification of the glamour of evil. It is 21st century Love Story-fable about, perhaps, the only kind of men who can save our children from Post-modern society's Death Wish sacrifice of the Innocent and Good to Hell and its self-loving/self-hating minons. It is about avenging angels(escapees from The PIT themselves)who are:MEN ON FIRE...

Tony Scott and Denzel Washington at their Best

Tony Scott's "Man on Fire" written by Mystic River-screenwriter Brian Helgeland is easily Scott's best film and one of the best of last year. There's few things wrong with this movie. The cinematography is great, the use of subtitles is great, Scott's directing and Denzel Washington/Dakota Fanning are in top form. The movie "Man on Fire" is about John Creasy (Washington). Creasy, an alcoholic ex-CIA operative, is given a job opportunity by his friend Rayburn (Christopher Walken). He is hired by
Samuel (Marc Anthony) and Lisa Ramos (Radha Mitchell) to be a bodyguard for their young daughter Pita (Fanning). Creasy thinks of it as merely a job, but eventually Pita gets to him and changes him. Then she's kidnapped and Creasy goes looking for her killer. Some critics liked the film, some did not. One critic said that he didn't like it because of the violence Creasy uses to find information about her kidnapper. The violence isn't overly graphic nor is it not graphic enough. It's pretty much right on par.
    This film is great; A

    Collateral DVD

Collateral offers a change of pace for Tom Cruise as a ruthless contract killer, but that's just one of many reasons to recommend this well-crafted thriller. It's from Michael Mann, after all, and the director's stellar track record with crime thrillers (Thief, Manhunter, and especially Heat) guarantees a rich combination of intelligent plotting, well-drawn characters, and escalating tension, beginning here when icy hit-man Vincent (Cruise) recruits cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him through a nocturnal tour of Los Angeles, during which he will execute five people in a 10-hour spree. While Stuart Beattie's screenplay deftly combines intimate character study with raw bursts of action (in keeping with Mann's directorial trademark), Foxx does the best work... The Manchurian Candidate (Widescreen Edition) DVD

The Manchurian Candidate, a classic of paranoid cinema from the 1960s, gets a cunning update, rife with hot-topic references to corporate war profiteering and electronic voting machines. Major Ben Marco (Denzel Washington, Training Day) has been haunted by nightmares ever since a firefight during the first Gulf War--a battle in which he believes he was saved by the heroism of Sgt. Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber, Kate & Leopold). But Marco's nightmares suggest otherwise and drive him to investigate what happened, which may threaten Shaw's candidacy for vice-president. Meryl Streep plays Shaw's mother, a senior senator who manipulates everyone around her with an iron will and a sharp tongue. The Manchurian Candidate loses steam towards the end, but up until then... The Bourne Supremacy (Widescreen Edition) DVD

When we met our hero, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) in THE BOURNE IDENTITY,
he was trying not to remember what happened last time and ends up
in a beachhouse. This film, as great as the first one has Bourne
trying to escape the beachhouse when the CIA (led by Joan Allen)
wants him dead, killing his girlfriend (Franka Potente) and taking
harmless Nicky (Julia Stiles) as hostage, leading Bourne many places
(incvluding India, Germany, Moscow, and more). Breathtaking,
entertaining sequel has as much car chases as THE ITALIAN JOB
and still the suspense of Robert Ludlum's book. A sequel
is expected next year, just for your imformation. More Info about this DVD

    I, Robot (Widescreen Edition) DVD

As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in I, Robot. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; I, Robot, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks.... National Treasure (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code, it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer...
