DVD Dad
William Wharton's startling and moving novel about fathers and sons got an above-average film adaptation from TV's Gary David Goldberg, who wrote and directed. While the film couldn't capture the sadness and wonder of Wharton's worlds-within-worlds construct, it did get exactly right the notion of how one closes the distance from a parent or a child. Danson plays an ambitious businessman forced to put work aside to care for his aging parents (Jack Lemmon and Olympia Dukakis) when his mother is hospitalized. Mom, it turns out, is a domineering dictator who has stifled Dad all these years; with her out of the way, Dad suddenly recognizes the possibilities of his own life. Meanwhile, Danson's estranged son, Ethan Hawke, comes home as well, allowing the two of them a rapprochement. Lemmon is particularly good (and almost unrecognizable). --Marshall Fine
There are many good things I can say about this film and how it touches my heart, making me laugh and cry. But what I really like about it is how it portrays the too common indifference of medical professionals, the courage of one son in challenging the status quo, and the impact a truly caring physician can make in healing mind, body and/or soul. My only gripe is that it isn't realistic about what it takes to get the right doctor on the case. They aren't offered to us the way it's depicted in this film. We have to find them.
rediscovering my folks
this is a film that teachs you about not only being a father but how to become a son, about being truthful to your roots and your future
If this one doesn't touch you...
You're pure ice. The film, while admittedly not ringing true in spots via dialogue or circumstance, is nonetheless engaging, touching, and emotionally draining. Some of the points it touches on are so dead-on it's scary. Acting-wise, it's Ted Danson's high point. He'll likely never top this performance, but it's enough to leave the world even if he leaves acting tomorrow. Lemmon and Dukakis are tremendous. YOu've read the plot in other reviews; just see it and get ready for an emotional jolt.
Actually, this comedy is one of the more enjoyable films to examine midlife crisis in the 1980s. Written and directed by Alan Alda, it examines the effects of middle age on a group of married couples who are longtime friends. Each season they go away on a vacation together, but the dynamic gets skewed when one of the men dumps his wife for a younger woman. Though some may find the characters' self-satisfaction and upscale neuroses a shade cloying, they are more than matched by Alda's solid, often funny writing. The couple with the biggest laughs: the hilariously paired Jack Weston and Rita Moreno (although Alda and Carol Burnett also strike comic sparks). --Marshall FineMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Alan Alda - Carol Burnett Director(s): Alan Alda DVD Release Date: Released the 31 May 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

Delightful romantic comedy benefits from a top-notch script (by Max Shulman and Julius Epstein-co-writer of "Casablanca"!), and the unexpected chemistry between lovable schlump Matthau and starchy Jackson, who are both fabulous. Affirming once again that true love will triumph over casual sex, "Calls" is a charming, clever romance, with plenty of laughs and heart. Matthau fans should flock to this.
I was so happy to hear Bountiful was FINALLY on dvd. I had waited so long.
It is without a doubt one of my top 5 Favorite Movies. Ms Page is absolutely outstanding as Carrie Watts. The oscar she received for the role was well deserved. Like a review before said, Ms Page had nuances of a southern lady down pat. I could have sworn that she was my grandmother, right down to the hymn singing. I do wish some of the other cast had won for supporting actors. All played their parts so well.
Now my reasons for liking this movies so much is:
1. A movie about Southerners in which Southeners are cast in a positive manner, not as a bunch of racist and rednecks.
2. The acting and script is simply outstanding.
3. A story that just about everyone can... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Geraldine Page - John Heard Director(s): Peter Masterson DVD Release Date: Released the 12 April 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

James Stewart reunites with his Harvey director, Henry Koster, in this 1962 comedy, which is charming enough even though it doesn't seem quite up to the level of talent involved. (The screenwriter is the legendary Nunnally Johnson--writer and director of The Three Faces of Eve, among many other titles--and the music is by Henry Mancini.) But it is pleasant, summery entertainment with Stewart and his screen wife, Maureen O'Hara, taking their urban family to a crumbling, seaside house for a vacation. The film was calculated to pull in older fans with Stewart as well as draw in a younger crowd that would enjoy the fairly extensive beach scenes with pop-star Fabian. Stewart is deft with the easy jokes about bad plumbing and such, and golden in several nice moments where he gets...
