  • DVD The Milagro Beanfield War

Robert Redford's underrated directorial follow-up to his Academy Award-winning Ordinary People, The Milagro Beanfield War is a loose and whimsical fable about community pride and social activism in the face of modern progress. Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman) plays a local mechanic in a small New Mexico town who takes up the challenge of rallying support for a local farmer who uses water owned by a real estate developer to grow beans in his field. Everything escalates to a showdown between the townspeople and the developers, with unexpected results. The strongest aspect of the film is the way it doesn't take itself too seriously, with Redford adopting a leisurely tone and allowing his fine cast (including Ruben Blades as the pragmatic town sheriff and Christopher Walken as a nasty state police officer) to deliver finely nuanced performances that touch on themes of faith and perseverance without seeming heavy-handed. The Milagro Beanfield War is an overlooked gem. --Robert Lane

Review(s): DVD The Milagro Beanfield War
    Just short of a Miracle

Years ago, when Director Robert Redford's second film came out, THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR, I watched it several times. I was enchanted by this modern fairy tale with a message for society.

Years later, and the beans have soured a bit. The `magical' scenes are intact, exactly as I remembered and just as powerful. But the film also has some curious scenes that would not be missed if they were on the cutting room floor. Those scenes aside, this is an enjoyable small movie with a loud anti-establishment theme.

The story follows Jose Mondragon, a farmer trying to make ends meet who decides to go against restrictions and use city war to awaken his beanfield. That small action is enough to excite his community and awaken a dragon in the small town of Milagro. The film becomes a chess match between the town and the big, old, mean government. And with Redford behind the camera, you know who's gonna win that battle.

The cinematography for this film is gorgeous but it is the Academy Award winning musical score by Dave Grusin that is the strongest element of the film. I can listen to those themes over and over again.

The Milagro Beanfield War is a good story if a bit unfocused, but it deserves its fan base.

The DVD has a nice audio/video transfer and a 6 minute interview with Redford looking a lot older.

    The Milagro Beanfield War

This is a grest movie. It shows the struggles between big business & a small town, with one man in particular. There are serious moments & there is humor. We loved it & never get tired from seeing it over.

Milagro, a miracle of a movie

We have loved this movie since it first came out. We have the VHS tape of it. It is wearing out. A year ago, I started looking for the DVD. It was a thrill to find.
The movie is a classic good vs. evil, but the 'characters' make it. And the absolutely glorious New Mexican scenery. Redford's wonderful eye for faces and places light up the screen. The music won an Oscar. Enough said. Get over the title. Try it, you'll like it.

    Laura DVD

This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face mixes the exotic with the girl next door, brings the poise and calm of a model to her role as the object of every man's gaze and the target of a killer. Laura, handsomely shot in dreamy black and white, is the first and best of Otto Preminger's cool, controlled murder mysteries. In the gritty world of film noir it remains the most refined and elegant example... More Info about this DVD

    Hotel Rwanda DVD

Solidly built around a subtle yet commanding performance by Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda emerged as one of the most highly-praised dramas of 2004. In a role that demands his quietly riveting presence in nearly every scene, Cheadle plays real-life hero Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in the Rwandan capital of Kigali who in 1994 saved 1,200 Rwandan "guests" from certain death during the genocidal clash between tribal Hutus, who slaughtered a million victims, and the horrified Tutsis, who found safe haven or died. Giving his best performance since his breakthrough role in Devil in a Blue Dress, Cheadle plays Rusesabagina as he really was during the ensuing chaos: "an expert in situational ethics" (as described by critic Roger Ebert), doing what he morally had to do, at... Million Dollar Baby (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Clint Eastwood's 25th film as a director, Million Dollar Baby stands proudly with Unforgiven and Mystic River as the masterwork of a great American filmmaker. In an age of bloated spectacle and computer-generated effects extravaganzas, Eastwood turns an elegant screenplay by Paul Haggis (adapted from the book Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner by F.X. Toole, a pseudonym for veteran boxing manager Jerry Boyd) into a simple, humanitarian example of classical filmmaking, as deeply felt in its heart-wrenching emotions as it is streamlined in its character-driven storytelling. In the course of developing powerful bonds between "white-trash" Missouri waitress and aspiring boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank), her grizzled, reluctant trainer Frankie Dunn... The Aviator (2-Disc Widescreen Edition) DVD

From Hollywood's legendary Cocoanut Grove to the pioneering conquest of the wild blue yonder, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator celebrates old-school filmmaking at its finest. We say "old school" only because Scorsese's love of golden-age Hollywood is evident in his approach to his subject--Howard Hughes in his prime (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in his)--and especially in his technical mastery of the medium reflecting his love for classical filmmaking of the studio era. Even when he's using state-of-the-art digital trickery for the film's exciting flight scenes (including one of the most spectacular crashes ever filmed), Scorsese's meticulous attention to art direction...
