A very light-hearted "feel good" movie. It is a great one for leaving your troubles behind, sitting back and being pulled into funny, yet often suspenseful situations. Doris Day as a suspected spy coming through as a real trooper fighting back. One of the better Doris Day comedies. Also, the number of famous actors in this movie gives the viewer a historical view on the evolution of true comedic talent.
A Mermaid's "tail!" .......
Doris Day shines while "dressed" as a Mermaid attraction for her Father's Glass Bottom Boat business (Arthur Godfrey) get "caught" by NASA Genius and all around HUNK Rod Taylor.
with this "start" to their relationship it just gets funnier. Doris a Widow comes to work for Nasa and attracts Rod even more who is working on top secret Projects. But Rod makes up a new project to put in "time and romance' with Doris. Toss in Paul Lynde as the ever funny "watchdog" for Rods fictious project, many Guest Starts including Dom DeLuis, Arthur Godfrey, Dick Martin of Rowen and Marten and many more! There are plenty of Spies and Spy "spoofs" on 007 and more very popular in the 1960's. One of the funniest scenes is when a very very UGLY woman (PAUL LYNDE IN DRAG) "SNEAKS" AROUND a party and into the Ladies room attempting to "spy" on Doris who just about everyone except Rod suspects is a spy.
Doris repeats her song "Que Sera Sera" from the Movie The Man Who Knew Too Much ...and this becomes her "theme song." Unlike other Doris movies this one does not drag along it keeps up with plenty of laughs, puns and spy spoof laughs most of the movie. this one has been a hard to find Video for many years and YES you can enjoy it now on DVD!
"Doris Day meets James Bond"
This DVD version of the 1966 movie was great fun-I had not seen this movie since it was released! The real stars are, of course, Doris Day, and in a very funny supporting role, Paul Lynde.
There are a lot of other well-known stars in this elaborate spy spoof, made at the height of the 60's spy-craze. Day plays a widow who is mistaken for a double agent, while at the same time, having an affair with Rod Taylor, who plays a "rocket scientist" The last 15 minutes are hysterical, with Day being chased by the real spy... Very amusing and entertaining!
After her long and wholesome run as America's Sweetheart, Doris Day quit movies with this well-scrubbed picture. With Six You Get Eggroll--oof, what a title--caught the wave of blended-family comedies, coming just after Yours, Mine and Ours and just before TV's The Brady Bunch. Doris has three sons, and new beau Brian Keith has an 18-year-old daughter (the still-baby-faced Barbara Hershey). It's family-friendly sitcom stuff, with both Day and Keith doing their comfortable, patented thing; when the two of them are onscreen together it's like watching a couple of old sweaters mate. I like Dorid Day movies and Please Don't Eat the Daisies is a cute movie starring Doris Day and David Niven. It is about a theater critic, his wife and their harried lives with their rambunctious young sons and they all move into a large fixer upper house in the country, etc. FYI: look for a young Stanley Livingston from My Three Sons, He played Chip in that classic sitcom and in this movie he plays Doris Day's and David Niven's son Gabriel. Doris Day was nearing her popular zenith, and Jack Lemmon just hitting his stride, when they teamed up for It Happened to Jane, a small-town comedy in the Capra vein. Doris is a widowed mom whose Maine lobster business is snarled by railroad tycoon Ernie Kovacs (hiding behind a skullcap and a huge cigar), the "meanest man in America." Her lawsuit against him, aided by lawyer-suitor Lemmon, gains national headlines. James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald.
Gerald's refusal to accept that Beverly's new career infringes on her duties as housewife is, of course, outdated thinking today. Nevertheless, the film works and is sincerely funny. Clark Gable's bluff masculinity is a big part of the story and appeal of Teacher's Pet, to such a degree that his age (near 60) doesn't seem like such a problem as he romances perky Doris Day. Gable is an old-school newspaperman who scoffs at the idea of journalism being taught in night school; hard knocks and shoe leather are his preferred textbooks. Naturally, Doris teaches journalism in night school. Gable masquerades as an inexperienced student in order to prove her wrong, which brings forth some fairly labored complications, presented in pedestrian style by director George Seaton. The film is too long for its own good, but as an illustration of movie-star value, it's a convincer--Gable and Day are completely, effortlessly within their established personas.
