  • DVD Hotel Rwanda

Solidly built around a subtle yet commanding performance by Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda emerged as one of the most highly-praised dramas of 2004. In a role that demands his quietly riveting presence in nearly every scene, Cheadle plays real-life hero Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in the Rwandan capital of Kigali who in 1994 saved 1,200 Rwandan "guests" from certain death during the genocidal clash between tribal Hutus, who slaughtered a million victims, and the horrified Tutsis, who found safe haven or died. Giving his best performance since his breakthrough role in Devil in a Blue Dress, Cheadle plays Rusesabagina as he really was during the ensuing chaos: "an expert in situational ethics" (as described by critic Roger Ebert), doing what he morally had to do, at great risk and potential sacrifice, with an understanding that wartime negotiations are largely a game of subterfuge, cooperation, and clever bribery. Aided by a United Nations official (Nick Nolte), he worked a saintly miracle, and director Terry George (Some Mother's Son) brings formidable social conscience to bear on a true story you won't soon forget. --Jeff Shannon

    Review(s): DVD Hotel Rwanda
Great bonus material, dramatic, stressfull, yet important film

"Hotel Rwanda" is an extremely dramatic and important film. Don Cheadle stars in this film as a good, hard working man who wants nothing more than to do a good job and provide for his family. When their is an assasination of a person of great power the Hutus set out to eliminate all of the Tutsi's off all ages, men and women. Don Cheadle's character Paul is a native Hutu and his wife Tatiana is a Tutsi. It's such a stressful movie because Don Cheadle's characters family is faced with near death on several occasions. Paul doesn't turn his back on the hotel guests. When chaos breaks out Paul is left in charge and the hotel soon becomes a refuge for orphans and people trying to stay safe from the drama surrounding the hotel. Nick Nolte stars in the film as a Canadian U.N. worker who does what he can to help the people at the hotel.

The bonus features are haunting. The "real life" Paul and Tatiana appear in the bonus features and even visit a memorial built to remember the people who died during the fighting.
The actress who played Sofia, Sophie Okonedo did a really great job in this film. She was very convincing as a worried wife and mother doing her best to protect her family.

    Horel Rwanda

This was a very compelling film, one that I watched three times, twice back to back. Although it does depict the utter brutally and the horror visted on the Tutsie people,it does not show the savagy of thier deaths. It does however, make us painfully aware of the complete lack of concern and assistance received from the rest of the world. Where was I ?!!!! The USA demonstrated it's usual response to situations that do not provide any profit for it. It followed it's usual course of action for situations in foriegn countries where there are poor people of color. Don Cheadle was excellent in his award nominated role of Paul Ruseabagina, and probably would have won the oscar if the film had been about a less politically embrassing subject.

    Amazing tragedy, amazing film

What a tragedy, the film was so hard to watch. The actors were superb. And a lesser tragedy is that Don Cheadle did not win the Best Actor Oscar! How could they not award him the oscar for this magnificent performance?! To give it to Jamie Foxx for doing a two-hour impression is ludicrous.

This movie is a monumental account of what happened in Rwanda that the whole western world turned their face away from.

    Ray (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Jamie Foxx's uncannily accurate performance isn't the only good thing about Ray. Riding high on a wave of Oscar buzz, Foxx proved himself worthy of all the hype by portraying blind R&B legend Ray Charles in a warts-and-all performance that Charles approved shortly before his death in June 2004. Despite a few dramatic embellishments of actual incidents (such as the suggestion that the accidental drowning of Charles's younger brother caused all the inner demons that Charles would battle into adulthood), the film does a remarkable job of summarizing Charles's strengths as a musical innovator and his weaknesses as a philandering heroin addict who recorded some of his best songs while flying high as a kite. Foxx seems to be channeling Charles himself, and as he did with the life of... More Info about this DVD

    Sideways (Widescreen Edition) DVD

With Sideways, Paul Giamatti (American Splendor, Storytelling) has become an unlikely but engaging romantic lead. Struggling novelist and wine connoisseur Miles (Giamatti) takes his best friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church, Wings) on a wine-tasting tour of California vineyards for a kind of extended bachelor party. Almost immediately, Jack's insatiable need to sow some wild oats before his marriage leads them into double-dates with a rambunctious wine pourer (Sandra Oh, Under the Tuscan Sun) and a recently divorced waitress (Virginia Madsen, The Hot Spot)--and Miles discovers a little hope that he hasn't let himself feel in a long time. Sideways is a modest but finely tuned film; with gentle compassion, it explores the failures, struggles, and... More Info about this DVD

The Aviator (2-Disc Widescreen Edition) DVD

From Hollywood's legendary Cocoanut Grove to the pioneering conquest of the wild blue yonder, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator celebrates old-school filmmaking at its finest. We say "old school" only because Scorsese's love of golden-age Hollywood is evident in his approach to his subject--Howard Hughes in his prime (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in his)--and especially in his technical mastery of the medium reflecting his love for classical filmmaking of the studio era. Even when he's using state-of-the-art digital trickery for the film's exciting flight scenes (including one of the most spectacular crashes ever filmed), Scorsese's meticulous attention to art direction... Finding Neverland (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Sweetness that doesn't turn saccharine is hard to find these days; Finding Neverland hits the mark. Much credit is due to the actors: Johnny Depp applies his genius for sly whimsy in his portrayal of playwright J. M. Barrie, who finds inspiration for his greatest creation from four lively boys, the sons of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet, who miraculously fuses romantic yearning with common sense). Though the friendship threatens his already dwindling marriage, Barrie spends endless hours with the boys, pretending to be pirates or Indians--and gradually the elements of Peter Pan take shape in his mind. The relationship between Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies family sparks both an imagined world and a quiet rebellion against the stuffy forces of respectability,... More Info about this DVD

Million Dollar Baby (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Clint Eastwood's 25th film as a director, Million Dollar Baby stands proudly with Unforgiven and Mystic River as the masterwork of a great American filmmaker. In an age of bloated spectacle and computer-generated effects extravaganzas, Eastwood turns an elegant screenplay by Paul Haggis (adapted from the book Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner by F.X. Toole, a pseudonym for veteran boxing manager Jerry Boyd) into a simple, humanitarian example of classical filmmaking, as deeply felt in its heart-wrenching emotions as it is streamlined in its character-driven storytelling. In the course of developing powerful bonds between "white-trash" Missouri waitress and aspiring boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank), her grizzled, reluctant trainer Frankie Dunn...
