THE THING ABOUT "HEAVEN HELP US" IS IT IS SO VERY MUCH LIKE THE ALL MALE CATHOLIC BOYS SCHOOL I ATTENDED FROM 1959-1963 IN THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA. IN FACT, SO MANY THINGS IN THE MOVIE ARE SIMILAR OR THE SAME, IT MAKES ME WONDER IF SOMEONE WASN'T WATCHING US. IT IS HILARIOUS BEYOND BELIEF FOR SURVIVING EX-CATHOLICS LIKE MY WIFE AND MYSELF, AND THE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN REFUSE TO BELIEVE SCHOOLS LIKE THAT EXISTED, AND PROBABLY STILL DO. LOOK, I WENT TO A SCHOOL THAT WAS REPRESENTATIVE OF HOW EDUCATION WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD HITLER WON THE WAR, BUT THERE WAS SO MUCH FUN AND FRIENDSHIP AMONG THE STUDENTS, IT WAS ACTUALLY A GOOD EXPERIENCE. THIS MOVIE IS FOR ANY OF YOU WHO WANT TO REMEMBER AND LAUGH, NOW THAT YOU'VE ESCAPED. IT'S ONE OF MY 5 FAVORITE MOVIES EVER.
The Joy and Agony of Being a Teen
Andrew McCarthy stars as "Dunne," a new kid in St. Basil's Catholic High School in Brooklyn. He quickly learns who the class bully is (A character named "Rooney" played by a great Kevin Dillon), who the class brain is(a character called "Caesar" played to perfection by some great actor who's name I don't recall), the class pervert, and the other mixed-up teens in a school where discipline is harsh and relentless. The shy Dunne also falls in love with Mary Stuart Masterson's troubled-girl character. John Heard shines as an idealistic young Catholic brother who rails against another brother's brutality and Donald Sutherland brings a quiet dignity to his role as the headmaster. Having attended parochial school myself, it is obvious the screenwriters did too, capturing the idiosyncracies: the "clicker" at Mass (something that my own principal really used), the wonderful "lust is a serpent with razor sharp teeth" speech before a boy-girl dance (like I used to attend), and the brutal hand-smashing (a common occurrence) and gum-on-the-nose scenes. Definitely a MUST-SEE movie for anyone who ever attended catholic school. You'll laugh and cry at the same time. Wonderful!
Drama not comedy
Low budget, very-well done coming of age movie, with a great youth cast (including a small part by "Lisa Simpson"). Captures life as a pre-teen: going to catholic school, being the "new kid", hanging out with a group of friends, and falling in love for the first time and dealing with the lose of important people. This was marketed as a comedy, but really is more a drama.
Now way in hell a guy that ugly will get Kelly Preston. I hope to God she has seen a barber since this film, yikes, looked like a forest....I would explore it though. Deliverance goes to high school in this grim, stripped-down fable of a prank gone bad. Friends decide to teach a lesson to a teenage bully by inviting him on a canoeing trip where they will humiliate him once and for all. The prank turns seriously sour, and the kids must deal with the consequences. Writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes takes a somber look at these lives, although his low-key approach makes the central tragedy seem melodramatic when it happens. The film isn't quite new enough to be truly revelatory, but Estes neatly avoids a River's Edge rehash by allowing his characters more than dead-eyed anomie. The actors hit their notes with precision, especially Rory Culkin (another of the Culkin family, with Macaulay and Kieran), Ryan Kelley, and Scott Mechlowicz. This is... 'Smukke dreng' ('Pretty Boy') is a 1993 Danish film that is only now being released on DVD - and in a version that has eliminated the original degree of nudity. Though it is being marketed as a gay film and though the story deals with male prostitution, there is little gay sexual activity and a lot of heterosexual activity. Makes one wonder about the international editing...the story could use the original setting!
Nick (Christian Tafdrup) is 13 years old, fatherless, and weary of living with a mother whose active casual sex life takes precedence over her role as a mother. He longs for the sense of belonging (especially for a father) but is made to feel 'in the way' for this mother's lifestyle. He flees to Copenhagen where he observes a gang of young men abusing an older... The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly...
