DVD Over the Top
Arm-wrestling might be far down on most viewers' list of "most cinematic sports," but Sylvester Stallone certainly goes the distance to prove the contrary in this lightweight but entertaining mid-'80s action/family feature. Stallone (who co-wrote the script with Stirling Silliphant) plays taciturn trucker Lincoln Hawk (though he's called "Hawks" by large portions of the cast), who faces two considerable challenges at once: to win the Las Vegas Arm Wrestling Championship, and to impress the son (David Mendenhall) who's been turned against him by his grandfather (Robert Loggia, snarling up a storm). Menahem Golan's direction and the soundtrack of bombastic '80s pop-rock (by Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, and others) is anything but subtle, and the host of opponents Stallone faces look like they were culled from professional wrestling (indeed, veteran grappler Terry Funk is in the cast), but Sly stalwarts and '80s action aficionados may find this rousing entertainment. The widescreen anamorphic DVD offers only the original theatrical trailer as an extra. Paul Gaita
I bought this DVD for my boyfriend who armwrestles professionally (before I dated him I didn't know there was such a thing). Anyway, I got it for him for his birthday. He kept dropping subtle hints about wanting the movie on DVD because his VHS version had seen better days. Upon receiving his gift, you would have thought I had given him the world. He bragged about his gift to all his friends and fellow armwrestling acquaintances. He said the quality of this DVD is excellent. The only complaint he had was that there were not any special features other than the original movie trailer.
SYLVESTER STALLONE = ORSON WELLES OF THE 1980'S
What can be said about OVER THE TOP that has not been said by millions before me? Words like "masterpiece" are thrown around this film so many times it's hard to add anything new, but I think I can. Why? Because I was born and raised in a tractor trailer and this movie really strikes a chord with me.
It all began when my father, a similar dirt under the nails type like Lincoln Hawk in the film, left my mother for no good reason except that she was rich and he liked to arm wrestle and drive a tractor trailer. So anyway, my rich grandpa hated my dad. The reason behind this was b/c grandpa was rich and daddy wasnt. Daddy liked to arm wrestle and drive a tractor trailer as i said previously. We know rich people and arm wrestles NEVER get along. So anyway, as Momma was dying, so Dad took me around the country in his truck and even forced me to arm wrestle some kid in an arcade. This was his way of teaching me to go OVER THE TOP and stop being a sissy. And just when I thought Dad was never there for me, I found out Grandpa lied and Dad had been sending me one letter a week for years... letters grandpa never let me read. One letter a week = This settled it. Dad really was a great father. Oh yeah, and my mom died, but it didn't really have anything to do with the plot.
THen OVER THE TOP Came out. The similarities to my everyday life were so striking I sued Mr. Sylvester Stallone. The Judge, the Honorable Hubert Soupenstein decided we should arm wrestle for rights to the movie. So dad armwrestled stallone, who of course won. The kind Mr. Stallone didnt mind us continuing to live in a tractor trailer forever and in fact even autographed this DVD for us. But it's not just about arm wrestling and tractor trailer kids, any kid can enjoy this. You know why? Cause it's about
FAMMMMMMMILY. And THAT is a story we can all learn from.
this movie took me.... well you get the idea.
Over the Top ruled! Lincoln Hawk is a down on his luck big rig trucker who tries to impress his wussy son with the powers of big riggin and arm wrestling. Unfortunatly, Hawk's mean father in law wants custody of the boy so Hawk has to get the Arm Wrestling First Prize money to win him back. Someone should have told him though that ramming a semi-truck through a house does not look good in court. A word of warning however, there are approximatly 600 mullets in this movie but Sly himself doesn't have one, so he has to compinsate by turning his hat backwards, which is the international sign of (A--) kickery. One of the better parts of the movie, (and most confusing) is when his son tries to escape his big rig truck and runs into highway traffic. Hawk catches him and grabs the child as he tries to struggle. It looks very, very bad and if I were a motorist and saw what was going on, I would call the authorities toot suite. Other then the cheesy 80's Pop and the pointless arm wrestler interviews this movie rocks.
The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly... With vanity projects like 1989's schlocky Lock Up to his credit, it's a wonder Sylvester Stallone survived to make some better movies in the '90s. This is a brutal dose of macho action that Stallone squeezed in between Rambo III and Rocky V, and his fans didn't seem to mind, so who's to judge? It's not as bad as Sly's other 1989 disaster (Tango & Cash), but you'd have to be demented, drunk, or have really low standards to call this a good movie. But if you're in a primal mood you'll get a kick out of this grimy flick, which would qualify as Z-grade exploitation if it weren't for Stallone's beefy presence as Frank Leone, a cooperative prisoner who's six months shy of parole when he's relocated to a hellhole called Gateway Prison. The wretched high-security... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Sylvester Stallone Director(s): John Flynn DVD Release Date: Released the 29 August 2000 Usually ships in 24 hours

In the opening scene of this thoroughly mindless action flick, a psycho holds a group of terrified hostages in a grocery store, and yells to renegade cop Marion Cobretti (Sylvester Stallone) that he's going to blow the place to kingdom come. "Go ahead," says the cop nicknamed "Cobra," presumably because he's tightly coiled and strikes with deadly force. "I don't shop here." And so it goes with this brutal and for the most part disgusting Stallone showcase, in which Sly's then wife, Brigitte Nielsen, provides bad acting and ample cleavage as a fashion model (what else?) who's the only witness against a crazed cult of serial killers. Cobra likes to kill first and leave the questions to his disgruntled superiors, who call on the maverick lawman when all other options have failed. This movie... I previously owned Rhinestone on a vhs. I love the music, I think Stallone was the perfect male to choose for this part, I loved him in the scene where he was wearing the pink shirt. Not all men can wear a pink shirt. Dolly is the best when it comes to country music. If you are a country music fan you must see this movie. It'll knock your socks off. It'll have you dancing in your seat. You'll laugh till your sides hurt. What more can I say its a great movie. I have watched it at least 20 times. DVD makes the sound and picture so much better. Everytime I watch it I get lost in the movie. If Iam having a bad day this movie will brighten you day. Try it I think you'll like it. Seeing as iv'e been a fan of sylvester stallone since i was a kid you always apart from rocky expect his movies to be full of OTT action, good guy vs the usally over the top bad guy this movie was no exception you have Cosmo carboni (stallone)playing a low class bum in the heat that is hells kichen, he is accompaned by his two brothers armand assante and lee canalito who at present are stuck in a rut and dont know what do to witrh their lifes until sly comes up with the idea to turn his bother (canalito) into a wrestler, there are times in the movie when the screenplay drags a slight bit but its overshadowed by the great acting from sly and assante. Rember the OTT bit? this is played to perfection by franky the thumper who most pro wrestling fans will know as terry funk his crazy acting...
