DVD Cadet Kelly
Presented by the producers of Private Benjamin, Cadet Kelly is the story of a young teenage girl's dilemma when her life of free-spirited creativity and unmasked familial love collides with a world of extreme military discipline and reserve. Kelly Collins, played by Hilary Duff, is a happy student at New York Middle School of the Arts whose whole world changes dramatically when her mother marries an army captain who's just been promoted to Commandant at George Washington Military Academy. Thrust into a rigid world of obedience that frowns upon creativity and individuality, Kelly manages to make one close friend, but clashes with Cadet Captain Stone (Christy Carlson Romano) and is eventually court-martialed. Sentenced to maintain the equipment for the drill team, Kelly's disdain for the team suddenly evaporates when she glimpses the beauty and creativity involved in their precise maneuvers. Eventually, Kelly experiences significant personal growth, finds an outlet for her creativity, and begins to forge an important connection with her new stepfather. DVD extras include commentary by Christy Carlson Romano and Aimee Garcia, a "learning the drills" segment with Hilary Duff and Christy Carlson Romano, a "drill team challenge" interactive game that will have viewers doing everything from lacing up a boot to deciphering military time, and a DVD-ROM party planner. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
No doubt you've already read the synopsis, so I won't insult your intelligence by telling you what this movie is about. I have a strong tolerance for Disney cheese and clichés, so I can appreciate the heart and soul of this movie, which is very good. I just wish these people would go meet some people who are or where actually IN the military (specifically the Army in this case). I'm going on 4years in the U.S. Army (2of which was spent in Iraq), and I have never meet anyone who meets that dry, emotionless cliché. We got every personality type I can think of, from computer geeks to jocks (and yes they can work together and get along), to Art majors and science majors. Few fit any one cliché, most are as diverse as they come, from race to religion.
Its interesting to see soldiers portrayed as lost among society and totally ignorant of social customs, individuality, and creativity (artistic, strategic, etc). Where do they think our military personnel come from, test tubes in some laboratory barracks? Although basic training and military indoctrination has a significant effect on most people, its mostly in the area of developing physical and psychological toughness by dealing with mental and physical stress uncommon in the civilian environment, and learning how to work as a team and rely on your fellow soldiers. This develops a sort of bond between all soldiers for they now all have something in common, yet are still unique. Every drill sergeant is unique, and I have yet to meet someone who didn't have a wild Basic experience or story I didn't experience, and vice-a-versa. Everyone still retains their own personality, hobbies, interests, etc. And other then in a training environment, the military barracks are very much like an apartment building. Well, I hope this has been somewhat informative.
Hilary is nice, but what about Christy?
I somewhat enjoyed the flik, despite its desperate and obvious lack of a military advisor, it was cute. Hilary Duff gives a typical bubbly and decent performance as "Cadet Kelly", I give her props for the dancing and marching manuvers. I like the movie for the Christy Carlson Romano factor! Christy is a very talented actress and she is super beautiful to boot! Combine her radiant beauty with an Army uniform and you have got the perfect movie - in my opnion.
Critics will say it is not a very good movie, but we have to take into account that it is a Disney movie and not made for us hardcore, blood-and-gore war movie types. It is supposed to be goofey and a little on the dumb side - that is how Disney has been doing it for years.
It is a good flik. CHRISTY CARLSON ROMANO!!!!

Perky teen starlet Hilary Duff wholeheartedly embraces the kind of earnest innocence all parents wish their daughters had. In Raise Your Voice, Terri Fletcher (Duff, A Cinderella Story, The Lizzie McGuire Movie) yearns to go to a prestigious music conservatory in Los Angeles. Her father (David Keith, An Officer and a Gentleman) won't let her because L.A. is a bad place--but her loving mom (Rita Wilson) and kooky aunt (Rebecca DeMornay, Risky Business) sneak her away. Once there, she gets a sassy roommate-of-color, geeky cool friends, a snooty rival, and a sexy British boyfriend (Oliver James, What a Girl Wants). Of course, all conflicts with family and friends come to a head at a big competition at which Terri rediscovers herself. Formulaic?Yes... Like The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Ice Princess is a fairy tale for girls who dream about what they can be. Vin Diesel is game to soften his tough-guy image in The Pacifier, in which he plays hot-shot Navy S.E.A.L. Shane Wolfe, whose latest mission goes awry when the scientist he's sent to rescue is popped off before he can tell Wolfe where he's hidden some Top Secret software something-or-other. Before you can say Kindergarten Cop, Wolfe is assigned guard duty at the scientist's family home, where he's left with some unruly kids when the widow (Faith Ford) takes off to Switzerland to claim her hubby's safety deposit box under the guidance of Wolfe's superior officer. The trouble with this paint-by-numbers fish-out-of-water kiddie comedy is that Diesel himself is a fish out of water in the movie--he's no comic and is far funnier when he's unintentionally spoofing macho...
