  • DVD The Doris Day Show - Season 1

Doris Day was still a big movie star when she switched gears and hit the sitcom trail in 1968. The Doris Day Show traded on her bright-bulb cheerfulness and effortless audience rapport for its appeal, and in its second and third seasons became a top-20 hit. Day herself was not happy with the premise of the first season, however: a widow and her two young sons move to the country to live with her father. The irony was, the job Day's character was leaving behind--writer for a New York women's magazine--was much more in the vein of her successful movie parts. (One episode has her traveling back to NYC to help on a story, and frankly she looks much happier there.)

Instead, the TV series lays on the rural corn, with much humor stemming from the grizzled father (Denver Pyle) and Gomer Pyle-like handyman (James Hampton). Doris's single status occasionally makes for a storyline, but this was the beginning of the great era of TV widows and widowers, and her loyalty remained with her boys. As a performer, Day retained the spunk and the naturalistic, conversational style she developed in movies, and it must be said that for a woman in her mid-40s she had the figure of a 19-year-old.

The series would switch locations (her character landed a job in San Francisco in season 2, which is previewed in the DVD extras) and change casts periodically. Perhaps the "jump the shark" episode for season 1 involves a tiger that gets loose on the ranch, one of those laborious contrivances that sank many a late-sixties sitcom before All in the Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show came along to save the day. The DVD set includes some quirky video messages from Doris Day promoting the show in 1968, two entertaining 1950s Day appearances on What's My Line?, and interviews with then-child-actor Philip Brown and James Hampton, who would become a regular in the Burt Reynolds stock company. All 28 first-season episodes are here, probably for Day completists only. --Robert Horton

Review(s): DVD The Doris Day Show - Season 1
A satisfying return to the past

A satisfying trip down a road to the past. A wholesome series that produced laughs without relying on vulgarity or the use of risque topics. Good natured fun. Doris Day shines in her role and gave it her all even though the series was done under her duress. Cast and crew are top notch and the setting is wonderful. Denver Pyle was excellent as her doting father. Interesting to note that he was only 4 or 5 years older than she. You don't have to be a Doris Day fan to enjoy this series. In fact, it might bring many new Doris Day fans to the table. Television at its best. I highly recommend it.

    Doris Day Season 1 1968

I have been waiting for years, not rerun since on CBN network in the 80's when her Doris Day Best Friend's was also on CBN. I watched when it originally premiered on CBS, Doris has always been a treat to look at, and to listen to, very radiant for being a widow just 6weeks earlier in real life, a true professional. Interesting reading that Doris did not like the first season being on the farm and you see the format change over the years to her being a career girl. The restoration of the series is excellent as well as the bonus material. What a suprise and a blessing that Doris was signed to do this series without her knowledge and started production 6 weeks after her husband death. I have already pre ordered Season II due out in late October.

Save your money you have to be a HUGE Doris Day fan to buy this!!

to start I am a very big fan of Doris Day for yeays. I had just bought the 6 DVD box set of her movies & loved that so I decided to buy this TV series. It is so awful words can't describe it. It's not because it's "dated" because I Love Lucy is alot older & sheer perfection. It's initially nice to see Doris in another genre but this first series just doesn't work for me for many reasons. The subject matters chosen are thoughtful(that's the reason I gave it TWO stars & the presence of Doris)..I'll tell you the show just bored me & I found myself fast forworded through the last 10 episodes.the DVD extra interviews with two members of the cast are interesting. There's NO new interviews with Doris(that's an old interview they put on there).I think the only thing new is that 8x10 shot with her dogs

The Doris Day Show - Season 2 DVD

The production values of the dvd for the second season of "The Doris Day Show" are consistent with that of season one which was truly top shelf! It is a real treat just to open the box to view the beautiful photos of Miss Day actually reflecting the second season. As in the first season, for me, it's the inclusion of the many bonus features that make the collection so special and wonderful. I love the next season previews with the shows opening sequences. It's also great to see all the extra out take footage from the opening. I must congratulate all of those involved with the packaging and dvd design. It's everything I could hope for and I do indeed look forward to seasons 3 - 5 as they continue to be released. More Info about this DVD

With Six You Get Eggroll DVD

After her long and wholesome run as America's Sweetheart, Doris Day quit movies with this well-scrubbed picture. With Six You Get Eggroll--oof, what a title--caught the wave of blended-family comedies, coming just after Yours, Mine and Ours and just before TV's The Brady Bunch. Doris has three sons, and new beau Brian Keith has an 18-year-old daughter (the still-baby-faced Barbara Hershey). It's family-friendly sitcom stuff, with both Day and Keith doing their comfortable, patented thing; when the two of them are onscreen together it's like watching a couple of old sweaters mate. This one is straight formula for fans only, although connoisseurs of camp will enjoy the whiff of Aquarius in the otherwise square proceedings (it was 1968, after all) when Doris goes to a... It Happened to Jane DVD

Doris Day was nearing her popular zenith, and Jack Lemmon just hitting his stride, when they teamed up for It Happened to Jane, a small-town comedy in the Capra vein. Doris is a widowed mom whose Maine lobster business is snarled by railroad tycoon Ernie Kovacs (hiding behind a skullcap and a huge cigar), the "meanest man in America." Her lawsuit against him, aided by lawyer-suitor Lemmon, gains national headlines. This is a curious movie: crucial scenes seem to have been left unwritten, while sequences involving Cub Scouts and an oddly impassioned Town Hall Meeting go on endlessly. Director Richard Quine was making some fun movies around this time (Bell, Book, and Candle), but the fizz is only intermittent here, mostly provided by Lemmon's jack-in-the-box youthfulness.... Teacher's Pet DVD

Clark Gable's bluff masculinity is a big part of the story and appeal of Teacher's Pet, to such a degree that his age (near 60) doesn't seem like such a problem as he romances perky Doris Day. Gable is an old-school newspaperman who scoffs at the idea of journalism being taught in night school; hard knocks and shoe leather are his preferred textbooks. Naturally, Doris teaches journalism in night school. Gable masquerades as an inexperienced student in order to prove her wrong, which brings forth some fairly labored complications, presented in pedestrian style by director George Seaton. The film is too long for its own good, but as an illustration of movie-star value, it's a convincer--Gable and Day are completely, effortlessly within their established personas. Gig Young adds pep... More Info about this DVD
