  • DVD Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie

Halloween can be a frightening time of year for piglets and young Heffalumps, but the power of unconditional friendship should never be underestimated. When a fierce "Gobloon" and an absence of candy threaten to ruin Lumpy's first trick-or-treating experience, Roo and Lumpy set out to capture the Gobloon and save Halloween. As the scared pair journeys toward the tree of terror, the pair reflects on Piglet's mastery of his fear of Halloween and begins to realize that togetherness empowers them. Perhaps true friendship can triumph over an evil Gobloon--even if the Gobloon does have the power to turn its pursuers into "jaggedy lanterns." But, what will happen when Roo and Lumpy become separated? French and Spanish language tracks are included on this DVD and bonus features include an almost impossible "trick or re-treat" game and party instructions for Pooh's Boo Bingo, Pass the Pumpkin, and a Heffalump Halloween Party Planner. (Ages 3 - 7) --Tami Horiuchi

Review(s): DVD Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie
    Que pasa, Eeyore!?

Winnie the Pooh- always a classic. Forget about how no one ever calls him Winnie, or explains this title, because every generation loves the tubby lil' cubby. With Disney forgetting how to make a memorable family film, Pooh is seemingly their last hope. With The Tigger Movie, Piglet's Big Movie and Pooh's Heffalump Movie, it seems like Disney knows this too. Those films have all done pretty well, regardless of their overall quality, and Disney's trying it again for the Halloween spirit with Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie. Is the movie cute? Definitely. All the usual characters (except for Owl and Christopher Robin) are here, including Gopher, it's very into the Halloween holiday, and amazingly, the production values are good. There wasn't a single bit of CG that I could find right away, and there isn't that usual direct-to-video poor animation quality. That's right- there aren't shadows all over the characters coming from one light source like in the Tarzan cartoon, Cinderella 2, The Lion King 2, and many others. And for that, I have to tip my hat for Disney for keeping Pooh's animation quality simple- the way it's always been. But I was surprised when I read other reviews claiming that this had an older episode (Boo to You, Too!) put into it as well. I hadn't seen that episode, and couldn't tell right away that they did this. Yes, that's a very lazy move, and this movie isn't worth owning if you and your kids have seen that already. But if you haven't, then give Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie a chance.

The movie starts out with the Hundred Ace Wood gang getting ready for Halloween. Roo and Lumpy, the British Heffalump, are best friends, and talking about what Halloween's all about. Lumpy still can't say "trick or treat" right. When they meet up with the others, good ol' Tigger scares the bejezus out of Lumpy with a spooky song about a Gobloon. Lumpy no longer wants to go trick or treating, but Roo convinces him otherwise. That didn't take 'em long, eh? They head out to get candy, and bust caps in the Gobloon- who supposedly lives in a very dark forest. When they make it, something scares Lumpy, and the two take shelter in a log. Roo then tells him the story of how Piglet became brave last Halloween, and we're treated to...a rerun of Boo to You, Too! Great. This takes up the majority of the movie. The funniest part of this is you can't tell it's a rerun if you haven't seen it before unless you pay attention to minor details. For example, Rabbit sports buck teeth for the first third of the movie. Normally, his design only has him showing the buck teeth when his mouth is open, not closed as well. When the flashback kicks in, his teeth are fixed. Good job there animation team. As soon as the flashback ends, Lumpy regains his courage, and they make it out of the woods, which yet again, leads to Lumpy screwing up. The ending's predictable, but still cute. Especially when Lumpy "turns into a pumpkin". This is one of the few direct-to-video releases from Disney where I've laughed a few times. And it should be noted that I never realized how manic depressive Piglet is. His song about just wanting to be with his friends is so depressing, but then he goes happy for a few seconds, only to be down in the dumps again. Also, has anyone else noticed that Pooh resembles Homer Simpson? What made me notice this was when he's walking around in his bug costume, which has a bright yellow cap, and he's trying to get honey out of a jar. Pure Homer. Finally, I don't see how any kid could be scared by this movie. If you kid is scared of a Gobloon, they are a sissy, and you need to get a better kid.

Amazingly, the movie is presented in widescreen, and it looks damn good. Colors are solid and vibrant, but not too bright, and lines are very dark. Sure, there are the usual interlacing errors since this wasn't given the biggest budget on animation and the dvd transfer, but I doubt kids are going to care. The audio tends to be a little quiet, so you may have to crank up the volume now and then. You also get Spanish and French audio tracks to play with.

Special features-wise, the disc is focused for young kids, giving us some very lame games. And I really mean it when I say "young kids". No one over 7 is going to pay any attention to these, and if they do, I'm assuming it's because they're deaf. There's a stupidly simple maze game which includes a guessing game- you guide Roo and Lumpy though dumb mazes using your remote. This is a complete joke if you're playing the game on your computer since you can use the mouse and skip right to the end of each maze. After that, you pick one of four objects to see if candy is hidden behind it. There's also bingo and a take on hot potato, only with a pumpkin. That's all. Oh, and there's also sneak peeks for other Disney movies and the trailer, and some Halloween Party Planner DVD-ROM features as well. You know, because the movie warrants a party based around it. But if anything, I'd say the best special features are the Spanish and French language tracks. Everyone sounds hilarious, and surprisingly, the lines are in sync with mouth movements. It's like they animated them specifically for each language as well. Actually, watching the movie in either language will probably cause you to get more out of it than you would in the original English audio.

Since it's almost Halloween, you should try and rent this one while you have a chance to get into the Halloween spirit. After it's gone, there's no real reason to watch Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie. Especially given its 66 minute run time. If you need a movie or show to baby-sit your kids, there are much better options out there. Like Finding Nemo, Wallace and Gromit, or any of the other Pooh movies or shows.

    Too scary

I agree with some of the other reviewers--it's a rip-off! The original Heffalump movie was so fresh and original, and then they take their wonderful new character and do a flash back.

This movie scared my almost three-year-old to the point where she won't dress up to go trick-or-treating and yesterday, when we went for a walk, she was convinced the trees had "mouths with teeth" and were going to get her!

It may be entertaining for slightly older kids, but keep it away from the littler ones. :(

    Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie

My daughter loves the movie, she has watched it several times.
I think it is a good movie because it addresses childrens fears especially at Halloween time and shows how Winnie the Pooh and his friends handle their fears.

    Pooh's Heffalump Movie DVD

Pooh's Heffalump Movie introduces a lovable new character to the Hundred Acre Wood. When mysterious noises spook Pooh, Piglet, and the others, Rabbit explains that everyone will have to band together to track down the dreaded Heffalump. Well, everyone, that is, except Roo, who's too small for the task. Not surprisingly, it's Roo who makes first contact, and he quickly finds out that first impressions aren't always true. You can see the Big Messages coming from a mile off (Xenophobia is bad! Don't underestimate little kids!), and one moment of mischief curiously passes without even requiring an apology. But kids will be charmed by the Heffalump and may even connect with the empowerment/maturity themes. Among the voice cast, Jim Cummings does knockout impressions of Sterling Holloway... Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief.

I don't know why this DVD is getting such a bad review. My girls (5 and 3) love it! I think the old fashioned cartoons and music are great. They are a refreshing change of pace for kids.
