  • DVD The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox

There's one scene in the middle of The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox--with Goldie Hawn and George Segal carrying on a foreign language conversation that stumbles across French, German, and Italian (with a little Yiddish thrown in)--that qualifies as a memorably funny double-talk sequence. The rest of this broad Western quasi-spoof is pretty coarse. Segal is a cardshark who appropriates a bag full of cash; Goldie is a dancehall girl without the heart of gold. This is one of those comedies where you can understand perfectly well why the two romantic leads feel antagonism toward one another--both are pressing way too hard under the direction of veteran comedy guy Melvin Frank. The movie labors in the shadow of Blazing Saddles, which at least got the conventions of the Western right. Meanwhile, the soundtrack is invaded by Bobby Vinton singing "Lemon Drops, Lollipops and Sunbeams," at which point you may wish Mel Brooks's cowpokes would come riding across the backlot and onto the screen. --Robert Horton

Review(s): DVD The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox
two comic pros working out on each other & the genre

I must've watched this 12 times as a kid when it played on Showtime and i haven't seen it since. But any movie that I am still quoting and recalling all these yrs later must hold up to the test of time and I'm betting that this is every bit as amusing as I found it to be in the late 70's.

Who hasn't fallen in love with Goldie Hawn? She was great in this.
George Segal says one of my all-time favorite loveable scoundrel lines, after he and Hawn and their bag of loot have fallen into the river he starts shouting, " Save the money! Save the money!" and Goldie replies, frantically, " I can't swim!" to which he replies, " Neither can the money!" Like i said, I'm still laughing at that line today. It's a cliche to say this but THE DUCHESS & THE DIRTWATER FOX is fun for the whole family and a funny/pleasant way to spend 90 minutes. It is a very nice surprise to find it available on DVD. Bravo to all involved.

This Movie Is Hilarious And I'm Pleased That It's Finally On DVD!

The Duchess and The Dirtwater Fox is a cute and funny movie set in the old West and about a gambler played by George Segal and a dancehall girl played by Goldie Hawn and this movie is funny and the scene where they crash the Jewish wedding and start dancing with the members of the wedding party is hilarious! I'm very pleased that this movie has finally been put on DVD and that it's in widescreen!

Goldie & George - May we have another, please

It's finally here on DVD. When I first saw this movie in 1977, I knew that I would be seeing it again...little did I think, that I would see it much more than again...at last count, 27 times. The producers seem to have steadfastly refused to release it on DVD, keeping it in a VHS format for decades...but finally it's here in DVD, thank the Lord.
It is possibly the best Goldie Hawn comedy (in close contest with Foul Play).
Both Goldie Hawn & George Segal play their respective roles as the hooker & the thief-lover-gambler to perfection. They are funny, lovable & above all, entertaining.
The script is outstanding...there is a sequence in a stagecoach, in pseudo-French, with a deadpan Mormon playing the straight role, which should be in the Comedy Hall of Fame (if they ever invent one). The Hawn song "you can pluck me apples...." is probably the funniest song I have ever heard. George Segal as the Dirtwater Fox is an irresistably cute rascal. The direction is excellent.
Would Goldie & George consider a sequel, even 30 years later???

    Foul Play DVD

Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. But it's the quirky things that make this film: the grandmothers playing Scrabble with expletives, Burgess Meredith's snake Esme, the old Japanese couple in the back of the careening limo. From the opening credits with Barry Manilow crooning the... More Info about this DVD

    Silver Streak DVD

Despite the presence of hack director Arthur Hiller, this hybrid comedy-thriller works most of the time as pleasant faux Hitchcock. Gene Wilder is a book editor who is relaxing by taking a cross-country train ride. Then he gets caught up in a murder--and becomes a suspect. It's up to him to prove his own innocence. As noted, the script, by Colin Higgins, owes a big debt to Alfred Hitchcock; but the mystery isn't all that mysterious and the comedy isn't all that hilarious--at least not until Richard Pryor shows up, which is at least halfway through the film. Things definitely pick up from there. Jill Clayburgh, as the love interest, is merely along for the train ride. Wilder and Pryor eventually teamed up for several other films, but they were never as funny together as they are in this... More Info about this DVD

    Kiss Me Goodbye DVD

This is a surprisingly winning little comedy, though hardly a hit. Extrapolated from Bruno Barreto's Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, the film stars Sally Field as a woman about to embark on her second marriage after her first husband, a charismatic Broadway director and choreographer (James Caan), has died. But as she plans her wedding to the likable but unexciting Jeff Bridges, Caan returns from the dead. Though only she can see him, it's a formula for disaster: She begins to doubt her plans and wonders whether she'd be happier with Caan's ghost than with Bridges's live body. Meanwhile, everyone else begins to doubt her sanity because she's talking to a dead man. Better than critics gave it credit for being, although you'll probably enjoy it more if you've never seen the original.... More Info about this DVD

    Waterhole #3 DVD

Anything I could say has pretty much already been said. This is a hidden treasure. Please please, whoever has the authority to do so, please put this out in a quality DVD edition. I really can't understand why it already isn't. Sadly, James Coburn isn't around anymore to do an audio commentary. I would really like to hear from all the principals what it was like to make this movie. More Info about this DVD

    Scalphunters DVD

After being coerced by a roving gang of Kiowas to trade his season's worth of hard-earned furs for a runaway slave, Joe Bass (Burt Lancaster) vows to take back what's his. Before he can get them, though, the Kiowas are slaughtered by a gang of `scalphunters' led by Jim Howie (Telly Salavas), who nips Joe Bass's furs in the bargain. With Joseph Winfield Lee (Ossie Davis) in tow, Joe Bass trails the fur and scalp-laden Jim Howie and vows yet again to reclaim his property.

THE SCALPHUNTERS (1968) is a comedy-western that somehow manages to makes palatable some terrible things - specifically, slavery and the harvest and sale of human scalps. It doesn't condone them, of course, but it doesn't dwell on their horrors, either. Lancaster is energetic and perfectly cast as the... More Info about this DVD
