  • DVD Kiss Me Goodbye

This is a surprisingly winning little comedy, though hardly a hit. Extrapolated from Bruno Barreto's Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, the film stars Sally Field as a woman about to embark on her second marriage after her first husband, a charismatic Broadway director and choreographer (James Caan), has died. But as she plans her wedding to the likable but unexciting Jeff Bridges, Caan returns from the dead. Though only she can see him, it's a formula for disaster: She begins to doubt her plans and wonders whether she'd be happier with Caan's ghost than with Bridges's live body. Meanwhile, everyone else begins to doubt her sanity because she's talking to a dead man. Better than critics gave it credit for being, although you'll probably enjoy it more if you've never seen the original. --Marshall Fine

    Review(s): DVD Kiss Me Goodbye
good example of an ill-humored comedy

This movie will appeal to all those who like "wickedly funny" comedies and to those who have been hit by a divorce that was not of their choosing or by the breakup of a relationship that was against their will and have had to watch their ex-spouse or their ex-lover find somebody new and become happy again. This movie sticks it to the new guy in every possible way, including portraying him as a stiff, dull nerd. What a neat revenge!

To all others, this movie is a waste of time and money.

    Kiss Me Goodbye DVD

It was a very good DVD. I enjoyed it very much.

    Excellent

James Caan is fabulous in this movie and Sally Field is very funny. The sets are wonderful, the comedy almost tongue in cheek but side splitting if you pay attention. It's a must have as part of any comedy collection.

    Max Dugan Returns DVD

Max Dugan Returns is a good movie that stars Marsha Mason, Donald Sutherland, Jason Robards and Matthew Broderick and they were all great! Max Dugan's Return is about a single mother (Marsha Mason) and her teenage son played by Matthew Broderick and how their lives get really complicated when her father who she hasn't seen since she was a child and he walked out on her family suddenly reappears on her doorstep and gives them expensive gifts which makes her boyfriend who is a cop suspicious. I'm so pleased that this movie is finally on DVD! More Info about this DVD

    Foul Play DVD

Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. But it's the quirky things that make this film: the grandmothers playing Scrabble with expletives, Burgess Meredith's snake Esme, the old Japanese couple in the back of the careening limo. From the opening credits with Barry Manilow crooning the... More Info about this DVD

    Murphy's Romance DVD

Director Martin Ritt (Norma Rae) helmed this offbeat romance that earned costar James Garner an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a widowed druggist who befriends a confused divorcee (Sally Field) and her son, who move to a small rural town to start over. The laid-back performance of Garner as a man finding love "for the last time in his life" contrasts wonderfully with Field's portrayal of a woman scared and unsure of what the future may hold for her, and the two of them together exhibit great comic timing. As well written and as deftly performed as any movie of its type, Murphy's Romance will rope you in with its winning style. --Robert Lane More Info about this DVD

With Six You Get Eggroll DVD

After her long and wholesome run as America's Sweetheart, Doris Day quit movies with this well-scrubbed picture. With Six You Get Eggroll--oof, what a title--caught the wave of blended-family comedies, coming just after Yours, Mine and Ours and just before TV's The Brady Bunch. Doris has three sons, and new beau Brian Keith has an 18-year-old daughter (the still-baby-faced Barbara Hershey). It's family-friendly sitcom stuff, with both Day and Keith doing their comfortable, patented thing; when the two of them are onscreen together it's like watching a couple of old sweaters mate. This one is straight formula for fans only, although connoisseurs of camp will enjoy the whiff of Aquarius in the otherwise square proceedings (it was 1968, after all) when Doris goes to a... The Four Seasons DVD

Actually, this comedy is one of the more enjoyable films to examine midlife crisis in the 1980s. Written and directed by Alan Alda, it examines the effects of middle age on a group of married couples who are longtime friends. Each season they go away on a vacation together, but the dynamic gets skewed when one of the men dumps his wife for a younger woman. Though some may find the characters' self-satisfaction and upscale neuroses a shade cloying, they are more than matched by Alda's solid, often funny writing. The couple with the biggest laughs: the hilariously paired Jack Weston and Rita Moreno (although Alda and Carol Burnett also strike comic sparks). --Marshall Fine More Info about this DVD
