DVD Law and Order - The Third Year (1992-1993 Season)
Law & Order's third year marked a transitional one for the top-rated drama. In 1992, Jerry Orbach (Prince of the City) joined the cast. His Det. Lenny Briscoe would turn out to be one of its most enduring characters. After Sgt. Phil Ceretta (Paul Sorvino) is shot by a gun dealer in episode eight ("Prince of Darkness"), Briscoe teams up with Det. Mike Logan (Chris Noth) in the next ("Point of View"). It wasn't meant to be a permanent change (Ceretta was injured, not killed), but the two would continue to beat the streets until Logan's departure in 1995 (Orbach, meanwhile, would remain part of the Law & Order universe until his passing in 2004).
The line-up was otherwise the same: Capt. Donald Craven (Dann Florek), ADA Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks), ADA Benjamin Stone (Michael Moriarty), and DA Adam Schiff (Steven Hill). In the following season, however, Craven will be replaced by Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson), the show's first regular female character (not counting Carolyn McCormick, who was billed as a featured player). The third season would also be Robinette's last; he will be replaced by Claire Kinkaid (Jill Hennessy) in the fourth. Meanwhile, Florek would go on to join Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999 (while Noth would join Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2005).
During Law & Order's third season, a number of soon-to-be-famous TV actors would put in appearances. They include Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under), Claire Danes (My So-Called Life), Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Edie Falco and Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), Adam Arkin (Chicago Hope), Michael Badalucco and Camryn Manheim (The Practice), Ron Rifkin (Alias), and Julianna Margulies (E.R.). The Emmy for Best Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, however, was reserved for Broadway dynamo Elaine Stritch in "Point of View." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Season 3: The L&O Legend Arrives
Other reviewers are right on when they say that the arrival of Jerry Orbach as the sardonic Det. Lenny Briscoe is what cemented this already great show as a winner. But viewing later seasons of the show proves that Orbach was at his best when playing off of his then partner, Mike Logan (Chris Noth). The chemistry between Briscoe and Logan brought that much-needed glint of subtle characterization to a show largely haled for its plot-driven elements. Yet, the shows were never weighed down by personal baggage as was often the case in this era's contemporary cop show, NYPD Blue. Its also noteworthy that Michael Moriarty as the idealistic ADA, Ben Stone still fueled the legal side of this drama. This season would be the curtain call for Cpt. Don Cragen (Dan Florek), and ADA Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks), both of whom filled their roles well during the early run.
The real staple of this show, of course, is the storytelling, which still proves itself to be more powerful and effective than anything found on the current burned-out series. Episodes like "Manhood," "Mother Love," "Night and Fog," "Wedded Bliss," and "Promises to Keep," are particularly powerful. Some episodes don't always have happy or neat endings as demonstrated by the riveting, "Conspiracy," in which cops and prosecutors hunt for the person who assassinates a controversial African-American leader. Some episodes also have a personal touch for the characters, including "Helpless," in which police psychologist Elizabeth Olivet (Carolyn McCormick) is molested by a sadistic gynecologist. Also, "Prince of Darkness," in which Logan watches his partner Phil Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) badly wounded by a drugged-out gun dealer. This is one of the darkest episodes of the entire series and would serve as the transition for Briscoe's entrance.
Some criticize the extras in this box set. They are a bit meager, but Universal has never been particularly generous with extras, so I'll take anything I can get. The two short featurettes are particularly moving because of Jerry Orbach's recent passing. The deleted scenes are interesting for diehard fans, but its obvious why they were omitted from the final print. I also applaud Universal for including a "Play All" feature. I wish more TV series box sets would incorporate this function.
All and all, this season is well worth the purchase and belongs in any TV crime-lover's collection.

DVD Set was in excellent condition and came in a timely manner. I was pleased with the order and the response. Good job!

Being an avid Law & Order fan, this package is quite special. Lenny Brisco (Jerry Orbach) final year with Law & Order. As the years have gone on, the stories have gotten better. And Lenny was one of the best.

As season two of Law & Order opens, Detective Mike Logan (Chris Noth) finds himself assigned a new partner in Detective Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) in the wake of the murder of his old partner Greevy (George Dzundza). From that point on, this is when the revolving door began to turn for the ensemble cast of Law & Order, even though the rest of season one's cast returns here. Michael Moriarty's and Richard Brooks' DA team are still the best duo in the history of the show (say whatever you want about longtime vet Sam Waterston, Moriarty will always be superior), and Sorvino and Noth are excellent together. The characters are given more depth, and the stories are more intense; containing that "ripped from the headlines" feel that the show would gain notariety for. The late Jerry Orbach, who... Reviewers like John Q. Public "vhspreowner" annoy me. Here's a person that obviously doesn't care about what he's reviewing, he just wants to trash anything popular. Don't beleive me? Look at his reviews. The guy doesn't like anything.
I, however, do like things. Many things. I include among them the Law & Order franchise. This season was released as a tribute to Jerry Orbach, as it was his last season playing Lennie Briscoe. Sadly, it turned out to be a tribute to Jerry as well, as he died shortly after leaving the show. Over the course of almost 11 seasons, Jerry became the man people thought of when you said "New York Detective." Dennis Franz was close as Andy Sipowicz on NYPD Blue, but Jerry was king. The man made the performances of those around him better... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Jerry Orbach DVD Release Date: Released the 14 September 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

The second season of Law & Order: SVU differs from the first as not as much time is spent on the detective's families. Ice-T and Stephanie March debut in the first episode of the season as Det. Fin Tutuola and ADA Alex Cabot, respectively. Michelle Hurd leaves the show shortly into the season as her character quits after being relegated to desk duty since being accused of having sex with a suspect. The show really hit its stride in this season. Seemingly everyone is involved with every episode, as opposed to today where Fin and Richard Belzer's Det. Munch do very little. Late in the season, B.D. Wong debuts as psychiatrist Dr. Huang. His character is a bit darker (for lack of a better word) in earlier episodes. Overall, this is a great season for the show and I highly recommend... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 27 September 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

From its gritty documentary look to its signature note-knocking "tching-tching" that signals scene changes, Law & Order was a groundbreaking cop show when it debuted in 1990. It has since earned Emmys for Best Dramatic Series and spun off satellite franchises, and reruns of the original series are as omnipresent in syndication as those of I Love Lucy. Devoted fans and those who came late to the series can catch it from the beginning with this six-disc set that contains all 22 episodes from the inaugural season.
Law & Order is television's most resilient series. It has survived wholesale changes to its ensemble. One of the secrets of the show's durability: its compelling structure. The first half of each hour-long episode is classic police procedural in which "Law,"...
