DVD Stripes (Extended Cut)
Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh
Bill Murray At His Best, And That's The Fact Jack!
Bill Murray is one of the most original and talented mans in the anals of comedy, as proven in classics such as "Ghostbusters", "Groundhog Day", "Caddyshack" and this 1981 gem, "Stripes".
Bill plays John Winger, a Chicago native who manages to lose his job, his car, his girlfriend and his apartment all in one day. Desparate to turn over a new leaf, John and his friend Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) decide to enlist in the army. When they get there, they meet an assorted bunch of wild and crazy characters, such as Dewey "Ox" Oxberger (a show stealing John Candy), a shy, pudgy guy who wants to emerge from the army as a lean, mean fighting machine, stoner Elmo (Judge Reinhold), and their drill sergeant, Hulka (Warren Oates). John manages to get on Hulka's bad side frequently, and his brash, snotty attitude makes him unliked by the other members of his platoon.
When Hulka is injured in a training session, Winger takes over his platoon and the army is never quite the same again, as John, Russell and their girlfriends (P.J. Soles and Sean Young) launch a daring rescue in Russia that leads to a ferociously funny and exciting battle sequence on an EM-50.
This new extended cut features 18 minutes of great new footage as inserted back in by director Ivan Reitman (who also directed Murray in "Meatballs" and "Ghostbusters") as well as an all new cast and crew interview, including one from Murray himself. This dvd is a must have for all fans who love comedy.
a classic military comedy
I just saw this movie not too long ago for the first time. Having gotten a hold of the extended DVD version, I was anxious to view this movie. Fortunately, I was not dissapointed. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and John Candy give great performances. Being a fan of Ivan Reitman's movies, it was no surprise to me that I enjoyed Stripes which I recommend to anyone. As for the DVD features, you get a mixed bag. The two-part documentary is entertaining as well as Reitman's commentary. The scenes in the extended version can also be viewed as deleted scenes in the special features menu. Normally if given the chance to view a movie with the opition of theatrical version or extended version, I would go with the extended version. In this case, however, I would recommend that if you haven't seen this film then it would be best to view the theatrical version. Why do I say this? The six deleted scenes that were restored for the director's cut are unfortunately not that good and slow the pace of the film. Out of the six scenes, there were only two that I found to be halfway interesting. After viewing the other four scenes, it became clear to me why they were taken out to begin with. Despite this minor flaw, Stripes in itself is still entertaining.
Chicks dig me,[...]
After Caddyshack, arguably Murray's, apart from his SNL work, breakout role, he went on to star in his first Ivan Reitman classic 80's comedy, Stripes (he was in Meatballs as well, but that was '79.)
Murray plays a slacker cab driver, ignorant to his go-nowhere lifestyle, who lives in New York with his seemingly demanding girlfriend. On a particularly sour day, he returns home to find that she's leaving him. Begging can't save him and she makes her departure. Harold Ramis, Murray's co-star in the two Ghostbuster flicks, and real life ex-friend, plays the yang to his ying. After a hilarious conversation about what to do with their lives, they decide to join the army because, well, there's nothing better to do and you get free money. What follows is ripe with prestine comedic timing and, of course, some [...].
Also starring John Candy (Planes, Trains and Automobiles), PJ Soles (Halloween), Warren Oates (Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia) and John Larroquette (ya know, the Night Court guy.) Stripes is your perfect 80's R rated comedy, and one of Murray's best comedic roles.
Ever caught yourself wondering what exactly "Noonan" means? To avoid further embarrassment, every golfer--hack or scratch--must tee it up at Bushwood Country Club for the golf classic Caddyshack. Harold Ramis directs a who's who of 1970s and 1980s stand-up and sketch comedy: Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and Rodney Dangerfield battle the forces of greed, golf, and gophers in a film that has become a comedy classic.--Richard M. This is one of those movies that works for all the wrong reasons--disgusting, lowbrow, base humor that we are all far too sophisticated to find amusing. So, just don't tell anyone you still think it's a riot to watch John Belushi as the brutish Bluto slurp Jell-O or terrorize his less-aggressive fellow students. This crude parody of college life in the '60s spawned many imitations, but none could match the fresh-faced talent or bad taste of this huge box office success. (Remember all those toga parties in the '80s?) The first of the National Lampoon movies, this was originally released as National Lampoon's Animal House. Keep an eye out for a very young Kevin Bacon in his first credited screen appearance. --Rochelle O'GormanMore Info about this DVD Director(s): John Landis DVD Release Date: Released the 26 August 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

In this crowd-pleasing 1983 comedy of high finance about a homeless con artist who becomes a Wall Street robber baron, Eddie Murphy consolidated the success of his startling debut in the previous year's 48 Hours and polished his slick-winner persona. The turnabout begins with an argument between super-rich siblings, played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche: Are captains of industry, they wonder, born or made? To settle the issue, the meanies construct a cruel experiment in social Darwinism. Preppie commodities trader Dan Aykroyd (perfectly cast) is stripped of all his worldly goods and expelled from the firm, and Murphy's smelly derelict is appointed to take his place, graduating to tailored suits and a world-class harem in record time. Eventually the two men team up to teach the... More Info about this DVD Director(s): John Landis DVD Release Date: Released the 24 September 2002 Usually ships in 24 hours

After building up the duo's popularity through recordings and several performances on Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd--as "legendary" Chicago blues brothers Jake and Elwood Blues--took their act to the big screen in this action-packed hit from 1980. As Jake and Elwood struggle to reunite their old band and save the Chicago orphanage where they were raised, they wreak enough good-natured havoc to attract the entire Cook County police force. The result is a big-budget stunt-fest on a scale rarely attempted before or since, including extended car chases that result in the wanton destruction of shopping malls and more police cars than you can count. Along the way there's plenty of music to punctuate the action, including performances by Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin,...
