Until Boogie Nights, this film had stood for almost two decades as the best performance Burt Reynolds had ever given. In a criminal oversight, he was denied an Oscar nomination, perhaps because it came in the middle of his action-movie winning streak. Directed by Alan Pakula from a script by James L. Brooks, the film cast Reynolds as a newly divorced man struggling to cope with single life in the city. But a blind date (initially misconstrued by the woman as a mugging) leads to renewed hope in romance when he and his new lady friend (Jill Clayburgh) actually seem right for each other. But before he can make a commitment, his flighty ex-wife (Candice Bergen) bounces back into his life to make him miserable all over again with her flirtatious indecisiveness. Wonderfully acted and observed; a highpoint is Bergen's attempt (as the world's least talented singer-songwriter) to seduce Reynolds with one of her off-key tunes. --Marshall Fine
I wish there were more movies like this one. Three great performances from Bergen, Reynolds and Clayburgh, who show perfect comic timing and real chemistry. The humor comes from real, often poignant situations, and every scene, from the more intimate scenes between Reynolds and Clayburgh to those at the group therapy sessions, are the real thing. The supporting players are also terrific. It's got one of the best endings ever. Listen closely or you might not hear the last line uttered by Clayburgh because the credits are already rolling. It's a beauty.
It's great that they've brought this film out on DVD. Now if someone would just release another great Clayburgh film, An Unmarried Woman, on DVD, I would be first in line to buy it.

This is a sorry excuse for a comedy starring Burt Reynolds and Jill Clayburgh . In this movie Burt is going through a traumatic divorce and his elder psychiatrist brother says to him"Call me if you get sad" to which Burt replies 'Can I call you if I get happy?". I was very sad watching this piece of junk at 3.00 a.m. but it was to late call anybody.The makers of this turkey of a movie should have "started over" and got a decent script. Also Candice Bergen proves once and for all that she can't sing!!! I give this movie 5 stars because I like Jill Clayburgh who showed so much promise once upon a time early in her career.

it was a hoot upon seeing this film in the theatre espeically the part where Candice Bergen tries to woo Burt back with her terrible singing "Better than Ever" I think that is the name of the song ..as always Jill Clayburgh was winning as ever and Burt couldn't been better too. Its a shame Jill's middle age romance flick with Jeffrey Tambor .. "Never Again" got the due it deserved when ti came out. Everybody should check that out, its a hoot too.
Actually, this comedy is one of the more enjoyable films to examine midlife crisis in the 1980s. Written and directed by Alan Alda, it examines the effects of middle age on a group of married couples who are longtime friends. Each season they go away on a vacation together, but the dynamic gets skewed when one of the men dumps his wife for a younger woman. Though some may find the characters' self-satisfaction and upscale neuroses a shade cloying, they are more than matched by Alda's solid, often funny writing. Delightful romantic comedy benefits from a top-notch script (by Max Shulman and Julius Epstein-co-writer of "Casablanca"!), and the unexpected chemistry between lovable schlump Matthau and starchy Jackson, who are both fabulous.
