DVD Hide and Seek (Widescreen Edition)
Dakota Fanning--the elfin star of Uptown Girls, The Cat in the Hat, and Man on Fire--trades in her blond locks for a semi-gothic brunette do in Hide and Seek. Fanning plays Emily, a young girl whose mother commits suicide. To help Emily through the trauma, her father David (Robert DeNiro), a psychologist, takes her to an isolated house in upstate New York. But instead of healing, Emily gets dark circles under her eyes, mutilates her favorite doll, and develops an imaginary friend named Charlie. In no time at all, things get spooky and David suspects this imaginary friend isn't so friendly. Hide and Seek owes a lot to The Shining, but whether the creepiness is borrowed or not, there's a decent dose of it (though the twist at the end is unlikely to surprise many viewers). DeNiro does his job with professional gloss, but Fanning carries the movie; she's got the kind of charisma that goes beyond acting ability--that ineffable glow that makes an audience want to watch her. Hide and Seek also features Famke Janssen (X-Men), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), and the ever-dependable Dylan Baker (Happiness). --Bret Fetzer
This was good...another must see. A good rental. Oh my gosh, I didn't know if it was the daughter who had problems or if there was a Charlie...Great!!! See it for yourself!!! If you liked Perfect Window you will like this one!!! It is creepy!!!
Worst De Niro film in years
This film was very irritating in that it attempted to create suspense without a real plot. The acting was good, but the storyline was just poorly developed and it almost seemed that the people making the film really didn't know where to go with it. Is that why there were 4 or 5 alternate endings? And none of the alternate endings were any better than the original one.
If this film cost $3 million to make, I'd bet De Niro probably got $2.5 million, the other actors split most of the rest, leaving nothing for the script writer.
Not Too Scary, Not Too Suspenseful, Still, Not Too Bad
"Hide And Seek" is okay. It's better than De Niro's other recent thriller, which involved cloning(the title escapes me right now). But in the long run, it's just another run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter thrill flick.
Dakota Fanning is sufficient as DeNiro's daughter who has become rather silent and stand-offish since walking in on her mother's successful suicide attempt. DeNiro moves to the country hoping to bring her out of her shell. Unfortunately for the both of them, Fanning finds a new "imaginary" friend who commits some rather ghastly deeds and makes her take the blame. Famke Janssen plays Fanning's psychiatrist and close friend and former student of DeNiro. Elizabeth Shue has a small role as a country local who DeNiro has a sweet spot for.
The climax of the film is what makes it fail in the end. It sort of ruins the "evil" atmosphere that is set by Fanning's creepy performance.
Only recommended to fans of DeNiro and modest thrillers. I would steer clear of purchasing this until I've viewed it as a rental or on TV. You may not want to commit too much money to this one.

With a plot that might've been lifted from The X-Files, nothing is quite what it seems in The Forgotten, a psychological conspiracy thriller with Julianne Moore doing fine work as a grieving mother whose nine-year-old son was killed in a plane crash. At least, that's what she's been led to believe, but when even her husband (Anthony Edwards) tries to convince her that she's delusional and never had a child, things start to get very spooky indeed. Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness.
