  • DVD Bill & Ted's Most Excellent Collection

Like, radical, dude--but not nearly as funny as it should be, even though it was a box-office hit. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are a pair of dim Valley boys, whose life is made heinous by a school history project. Enter George Carlin as a futuristic dude with a time-traveling phone booth. So Bill and Ted go back in time to round up a gang of historical figures (Socrates, Joan of Arc) to bring back for their presentation. Abe Lincoln at the mall? That's about as witty as it gets, rendering this the kind of comedy that gives teenaged audiences a bad name. --Marshall Fine

It is the future. Society has at last solved all its major problems, thanks to amiable lunkheads Bill and Ted and the inspiring music of their band, Wyld Stallyns. Only one man is dissatisfied with the way things have turned out, the evil De Nomolos. In an effort to change the future, De Nomolos sends evil Bill and Ted robots back in time to prevent the real Bill and Ted from winning a pivotal Battle of the Bands. What follows is a spirited journey through the afterlife as Bill and Ted try to rescue their girlfriends, save the future, and, oh, yeah, learn how to play the guitar. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey swings easily between childish and clever humor, and is good at both: a Bergman reference is quickly followed by an equally funny bit about Death's stinky feet. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter seem happy to be reprising their roles and even manage to add funny spins on Evil Robot Bill and Ted. William Sadler very nearly steals the movie as Death, playing both his wounded dignity and budding desire to be funky to a T. As if that weren't enough, George Carlin returns as Rufus and Pam Grier does a cameo just for the hell of it. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey is ample proof that not all sequels suck. Sometimes they're even better than the original. --Ali Davis

Review(s): DVD Bill & Ted's Most Excellent Collection
    Bill & Ted? Excellent!

So, I just bought this new boxed set release of the Bill & Ted movies. I already had them on DVD from when they were released individually a few years back, but I really wanted the new bonus materials (plus I was curious to see the cartoon again as I barely remembered it's existence).
    This set did not disappoint.
I'm assuming most of you who are looking at this page have already seen at least "Excellent Adventure", so I won't go into the details of the plot of either film. Suffice to say that both films still hold up really well to this day. In some ways, I'd say they work even better NOW than they did when they were first released.
The bonus materials are quite fascinating as well. It was interesting to hear some of the original ideas for the first movie, as well as some of the ideas for a potential third film to the series. Plus, it's funny to see that all these years later, Alex Winter (Bill), still looks almost exactly the same. The man has barely aged.
The episode of the cartoon was very funny, and fits rather well with the movies.
I definitely recommend checking this set out, even if you already own both movies from their individual release.

    TWO great movies!

The other reviewer is relying on childhood memories of the two films. Excellent Adventure is a great film, and when the second film came out, it did not have the time machine and the historical dudes from the first movie, so it felt too different than the first. Not many people cared for it, but I have been showing these films to my nieces and nephews for years now and the complete consensus is that the second film is a better film than the first. The writing is just as good and the film moves along quite well.
The two films feel quite different, but this is a good thing. They did a time travel movie already, so they went on to something else. It works!
Bogus Journey is a very funny film that needs to have a second look by fans of the first. Just keep in mind that it is not about time travel and historical dead dudes.

I have both the original DVDs, but I am reordering this collection for the extras.

    Extras on these discs include:
The Original Bill & Ted: In Conversation With Screenwriters: Chris Matheson & Ed Solomon
    The Most Triumphant Making-Of Documentary
Score! An Interview With Guitarist Steve Vai
Hysterical Personages: Biographies of Nine Historical Dudes and One Babe Dressed as a Dude
One Sweet and Sour Chinese Adventure To-Go - Episode of the Cartoon
The Linguistic Stylings of Bill & Ted
    And Radio Spots

Really Great Box Set-Fan's Will Be Pleased

Like whoa. It's hard to believe that it's been nearly 17 years since Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventur was released. The film in it's original format has been on DVD for quite some time but this July 16th Bill & Ted get the royal treatment with the MGM release of Bill & Ted's Most Excellent Collection. This three dvd box set is a must have for fans of the classic movie.

It's not often that teen oriented films from the eighties get this kind of royal treatment. The three dvd's are housed individually in keepsake boxes. The first disc includes the movie that started it all Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Bill & Ted were two high school teenagers living it up in San Dima's California. They enjoyed playing music with their band Wyld Stallion. They are in danger of failing history. If they fail history, no graduation. Then they meet Rufus. Rufus takes them on a wild trip through time and they bring back icons from the past and integrate them into their history presenation. It's a really great film with a lot of action. The film really was a surprise hit because before Bill & Ted Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter were not big stars. Alex Winter had a small role in The Lost Boys as Marco, the first vampire killed by the Frog Brothers. Keanu prior to Bill & Ted starred with Lori Loughlin (Full House, Summerland) in the cult classic comedy The Night Before.

Several years after Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure came Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. This film was a bit of a stinker and didn't capture the magic of the original film. In this film Bill & Ted face off with the grim reaper. I think part of the magic that was lost was due to the fact that the grim reaper isn't a real person. In the first movie you had Joan of Arc(portrayed by Jane Wiedlin from The Go Go's) and Napoleon, it was interesting to see how these people might be in modern times. The storyline and writing wasn't as good either with the second film.

The box set includes Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, and a third disc filled with bonus material. The bonus disc is really great. This set is a must have for fans of the movie. It includes a making of featurette, the premiere episode of the cartoon series, an air guitar tutorial with guitarist Steve Vai, and much more. This is a great set, fans will be pleased!

P.S. Since several reviewers have decided to take jabs at me and a few people have asked me how I reviewed a set that's not released I own imissthe80s, so there I have had a review copy for quite some time and I stick by my review.

Constantine (2-Disc Deluxe Edition with Comic Book) DVD

In the grand scheme of theological thrillers, Constantine aspires for the greatness of The Exorcist but ranks more closely with The Order. Based on the popular Hellblazer comic book series, and directed with nary a shred of intelligence by music video veteran Francis Lawrence, it's basically The Matrix with swarming demons instead of swarming machines. Keanu Reeves slightly modifies his Matrix persona as John Constantine, who roams the dark-spots of Los Angeles looking for good-evil, angel-devil half-breeds to ensure that "the balance" between God and Satan is properly maintained. An ancient artifact and the detective twin of a woman who committed evil-induced suicide (Rachel Weisz) factor into the plot, which is taken so seriously that you'll... More Info about this DVD

    Freaked DVD

By the time the pair of bloodshot, gun-toting, Rastafarian eyeballs appears, you know you're witnessing the birth of a new cult film. In the delirious Freaked, a sleazy multinational corporation hires a spoiled-rotten former child star named Ricky Coogin (Alex Winter, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) to be the spokesman for a toxic biochemical fertilizer. When Ricky goes down to the poverty-stricken third world country where the toxin is used, he---along with his best friend and a comely anti-corporate activist (Megan Ward, Joe's Apartment)--get sidetracked to a freakshow presented by the flamboyant Elijah C. Batman Begins (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) DVD

Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?

    Sin City DVD

Brutal and breathtaking, Sin City is Robert Rodriguez's stunningly realized vision of Frank Miller's pulpy comic books. In the first of three separate but loosely related stories, Marv (Mickey Rourke in heavy makeup) tries to track down the killers of a woman who ended up dead in his bed. In the second story, Dwight's (Clive Owen) attempt to defend a woman from a brutal abuser goes horribly wrong, and threatens to destroy the uneasy truce among the police, the mob, and the women of Old Town. Finally, an aging cop on his last day on the job (Bruce Willis) rescues a young girl from a kidnapper, but is himself thrown in jail. Years later, he has a chance to save her again.

The Batman Legacy (Four Film Giftset) DVD

For fans and newcomers, this boxed set holds a great collection, including all four great movies. The first in the series, Batman (1989), and arguably the best of the four movies, exudes the moodiness of the Dark Knight's character. Tim Burton's direction and Michael Keaton's rendition of Batman are an electrifying combo. Together they capture the sinister atmosphere of Gotham City and Batman's darkness. Jack Nicholson as the fiendish Joker and Kim Basinger as the resourceful and gorgeous Vicki Vale lend their charm. Three years later, in 1992, Burton and Keaton reunited for Batman Returns. This time our pointy-eared hero has to combat two villains: Danny DeVito as the disturbed and freaky Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. In Batman Forever (1995), Joel...
