DVD Dear Frankie
Driven by intelligent, constantly surprising and moving performances from the film's leads, Dear Frankie stars Emily Mortimer (Lovely and Amazing) as Lizzie, Scottish mother of Frankie (Jack McElhone), a deaf and highly intelligent 9-year-old. Constantly uprooting themselves and relocating from town to town, Lizzie and Frankie are on the run from the latter's abusive father, a fact unknown to the boy, who believes his dad is a busy seaman sending letters full of adventure and love. In fact, Lizzie is writing those missives, but she is faced with a challenge when Frankie discovers his father's ship will dock nearby. Lizzie hires a kind, handsome stranger (Gerard Butler) to play Frankie's dad, creating an odd situation in which ever-growing lies become a conduit for love, and Lizzie's repressed desires come to the fore with a man posing as her husband. The moral tangles are of interest in director Shona Auerbach's charmingly paced, quietly insightful drama-comedy, but so is the glorious feeling of watching these characters come fully alive. --Tom Keogh
I really enjoyed this film! The story is a wonderful look at how a life can come to a stand still and by letting in just a few people, life can begin again. The cast in the film is superb. A must see film if you enjoy a film with a great story line and characterizations.
ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES IVE EVER SEEN
This movie was without a doubt one of the best movies i have ever seen. I had it downloaded on my computer and i loved it so much i had to buy it so that i could watch it on big screen. Gerard Butler is very convincing in this role of a caring father type. He is just so wonderful in this part.
The movie is a very touching story and i believe everyone should watch it. It will make you smile and cry. It is just one of those movies that you get so into you are emotionally there. It is truely a wonderful movie! And if you are reading this i hope you watch it!
Language of the Heart
Don't even think of watching this astonishing little film without the English subtitles. Conversations are so awash in Scottish accents that it's like hearing a foreign language; by the time your ears are accustomed, the movie's over. And after a few minutes, you won't want to miss a word of its thoughtful script and the simple story it has to tell. There's more to "Dear Frankie" than meets the eye, although what meets the eye is nicely photographed in a small seacoast town. Mother love is so rarely the sole subject of a movie that when it is depicted so movingly, as it is here, we're surprised. Why haven't other filmmakers tackled this theme?
A mother (Emily Mortimer) has fooled her small deaf son (Jack McElhone) into believing the absent but abusive father he's never seen is away at sea. She writes letters from "Da" to the boy; he writes back, allowing her to see into the heart of her son. When the boy learns that his Da's ship will briefly be in port, the mother hires a stranger (Gerard Butler) to pose as his father for the day. What could possibly go wrong? You think you know but, like the twists in "Million Dollar Baby," you really don't. All the performances are honed beautifullly to within an inch of sentimentality, so that although you want to cry, you can't. Your heart is too full of happiness for that.
The Roman bath scene with Gerard Butler(Attila) makes it all worth while.
It is also a great movie. I find it humorous and it has just enough fact and fiction mixed together to make it interesting. More Info about this DVD Director(s): Dick Lowry DVD Release Date: Released the 05 November 2002 Usually ships in 24 hours

Although it's not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical. Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingénue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn't Rossum's match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as "The Music of the Night." The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly but seems wooden. The biggest name in the cast, Minnie Driver, hams it up as diva Carlotta, and she's the only principal whose voice was dubbed (though she does sing the closing-credit number, "Learn to Be Lonely," which is also the only new song).
The acting in this dramatic presentation is superb. Derek Jacoby and Gerard Butler are, as usual, outstanding. One of the more refreshing qualities of television series made in Great Britain is that, rather than attempting to "glamorize" the characters, emphasis is placed on the reality and believability of the characters. I found myself quickly drawn in and caring about what was happening in the lives of the various people being portrayed in this series -- which is, afterall, the true test of good entertainment. If one wants to get lost in another world for a few hours, this series is worthwhile. More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 25 February 2003 Special Order

As a director, Wes Craven has been able to infuse his horror movies with humor and some smart, often genuinely creepy, thrills, even on his lowest-budgeted films. As a producer of horror movies, well, his record has been spotty at best. Craven tapped his longtime editor Patrick Lussier to direct Dracula 2000, and the movie ends up with all the good and bad of "a Wes Craven production." A modern-day update of the Dracula legend, the script has some genuinely good ideas. Christopher Plummer (The Insider) takes a relatively juicy role as Van Helsing, owner of an antiques shop specializing in ancient weapons. He takes exception to how his namesake was portrayed in Bram Stoker's classic novel, which he's more than happy to tell his assistant (Jonny Lee Miller, "Sick Boy" from... A romantic drama in the Masterpiece Theater vein, this John Madden film looks at the relationship between Queen Victoria and John Brown, a commoner who, though a servant, becomes her closest friend and confidant. As such, he proves the catalyst to bring her back into public life and out of her private mourning for the late Prince Albert. But the closeness of their friendship sets tongues wagging about the impropriety of what appears to be an affair between queen and commoner (an issue the film never directly addresses). The film's charm lies in the flinty give-and-take between the wonderfully starchy Judi Dench as Victoria and the robust Scottish comedian Billy Connolly, here playing it straight as a strong-willed Scotsman who comes to enjoy the power he wields by virtue of having...
