Puppy Scooby-Do and his four young friends have a knack for getting involved in mysteries ranging from bicycle theft to bank robbery in the A Pup Named Scooby-Do series for television--never mind that Scooby-Doo's gang is barely old enough to enroll in elementary school! As in the Scooby-Doo series, Fred takes an enthusiastic lead with his often far-fetched theories, while Daphne is most concerned about getting messy. Shaggy is laid-back and easily spooked and Velma, though a tyke of few words, exhibits a very busy intellect. Scooby-Do, who bears almost no resemblance to the often-annoying Scrappy-Doo some viewers may be familiar with, performs for Scooby Snacks. These mysteries share a marked similarity with the regular Scooby-Do series, complete with extended chase scenes with slimy ghosts, hidden rooms, and an abundance of creepy monsters. What's unique to the A Pup Named Scooby-Doo series is that the ghosts and monsters are slightly less scary, the clues are more obvious, and Velma walks young viewers through the process of figuring out the identities of the thieves just prior to their revealing. This compilation includes "A Bicycle Built for Boo," "The Sludge Monster from the Earth's Core," "Wanted Cheddar Alive," and "The Schnook Who Took My Comic Book" and features both spoken language and subtitle options in English, French, and Spanish. more corporate greed ,they know people want complete seasons but they dont care..all these episodes will be realeased in volumes and after that they will be realeased in seasons just so they can milk you for every dime you have.they did the same thing with scooby doo where are you and the biggest joke was the twilight zone which had 43 ..thats right freakin 43 volumes and then after that they realease complete seasons..i think i'll pass on these volumes for now F-U-W-B

The 80s were a goldmine decade of great animated shows. Stuff we got in those ten years we just don't see any more. Quite literally. I don't think we'll ever see Denver the Last Dinosaur or Centurions on DVD. One of the forgotten shows among dozens of others was A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. The Scooby-Doo franchise suffered a heavy blow in the 80s when some silly man wearing a suit thought it would be a good idea to introduce Scrappy-Doo, a highly irritating doggy who never kept his mouth shut for more than two seconds. Freddy and Velma also disappeared for a while and Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy would go off solving mysteries with just Daphne.
Desperate for a new way to re-invent the franchise, Warner gave us A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, an interesting, if failed attempt.
The show features the Mystery Inc. gang as kids and Scoob as a little puppy. The humor and animation is more offbeat and Looney-Tunes orientated but the mysteries are still substantial and the locations still occasionally Gothic and atmospheric.
Shaggy and Scooby are still voiced by Casey Kasem and Don Messick. Since they are the backbone of the show it's good to have this consistency. The childhood angle also gives us new insight into their background.
Many have criticised this show, claiming it to be aimed at under-tens and that it an embarrassment to the Scooby-Doo franchise. Well, I never found it to be that way. As a Scooby-Doo fan I thought this show was very amusing and I loved the score and songs by John Debney. There should be a soundtrack CD released. It really is a shame it never lasted for longer.
Since there were only 26 episodes made I can't help but be angry at Warner's awful DVD presentation of the show. Since they are releasing loads of their back-catalogue animation in beautifully packaged box sets (Premier Collections/Spotlight Collections/Golden Collections) I find it baffling that A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (a show that would have suited this format well) gets a horrid DVD release with 4 episodes per disc, a crappy snap-case box (we're STILL getting these in 2005!) and no extra features. The 1.33:1 full frame picture and Mono sound are perfectly adequate but, even though the show failed, it still deserves a much better DVD release than the one it got.
Shame on you Warner for neglecting this one instalment of a cash-cow that has generated you billions of dollars.

My grandosn loves Scooby-Doo, and this disk is no exception. In fact, he took it home with him. It has the same high quality of all Scooby cartoons, and the monsters are just scarey enough to be fun and not really scare the child. We buy all the Scooby we can for the sense of adventure and because the monsters are always proved to be nothing to be afraid of. Scooby-Doo has existed in various incarnations since the 1960s. Its popularity lasts to this day. Why? It's a retarded series about 4 kids and their Great Dane that ride around in a van and solve mysteries wherever they stop. The dog, Scooby-Doo, can talk, but it can only kinda sorta talk. Why not give it a full vocabulary then? The kids aren't that spectacular: Fred is the level-headed one, Daphne is the ditz (but she's hot), Velma is the unattractive brains, and Shaggy is the hungry slacker (stoner?). Really, the stories are dorky and unrealistic. The kids manage to stumble accross a mystery wherever they go (where do they live, anyway?), out-smart some dim-witted villains, and solve the mystery by the episode's end. This show looked awful. If you can stomach the weak computer animation. These cartoon clones that lack and charm and the warm funny jokes of the earlier Scooby Doo films, and realize that this came from the same film studio that gave us the awful live action Scooby Doo films, then that says it all. The Warners dvd disk of this film is also awful with both a lousy cartoon and their version of bonus features looks like some of the same cheap artists who did the JLU and Teen Titans cartoons on DVD, also did this. It make me sick. I think it would make anyone who grew up watching Scooby Doo, yearning for the days when Bill Hanna and Joe Barbara were doing them. They at least knew what they were doing. I ran into Curly Neal at a supermarket opening and asked him about "appearing" in the Scooby Doo Cartoons. he said that he gets nothing from the DVDs since he didn't do the vocal work and his likeness was covered under promotional appearances as a Globetrotter. But he didn't seem too bitter about it since a lot of small kids knew who he was from these cartoons - doesn't hurt that he still looks young.
