Released in the wake of Hotel Rwanda, In My Country tackles another grim chapter in African history. Set during South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the film is adapted from Antjie Krog's Country of My Skull. Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) is Anna, an Africaans poet and broadcaster, and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) is Langston, a Chicago reporter. The two meet during the hearings and take an instant dislike to each other. In due time, however, they come to an understanding and embark on a tentative affair, despite Anna's faith in the hearings and Langston's doubts. John Boorman, whose previous features were the underrated Beyond Rangoon and The Tailor of Panama, coaxes sensitive performances from his leads and sheds welcome light on an important event, but In My Country never catches fire. Boorman regular Brendan Gleeson (The General), however, makes a memorable appearance as a sadistic police chief. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
I wish everyone on the face of the earth was required to see this movie. It is so very, very powerful. The 2004 Diamond Cinema for Peace Award Berlin Film Festival is well earned.
I am not a big movie watcher, but this is one that well worth the time spent watching. I dare anyone to watch it without sheding tears.
The movie has been panned as being to simplistic, well... some of us who didn't understand what was going on in South Africa need things simplistic.
Jackson and Binoche play very powerful roles, I just wish their roles had been written a little differently -- and I sooo don't have a problem with interracial relationships. I just believe more could have been accomplished by portraying their relationship differently and is why I give it 4 rather than the 5 stars I so want to give it.
Train Wreck of a Movie
"In My Country" is undermined straight from the start by its tone deaf casting. This film - based on the narrative writings of stellar South African journalist Antjie Krog - somehow gets a starring duo of a Frenchwoman and Irishman playing Afrikaaners and an American (Samuel L. Jackson) ludicrousy grafted on top of the screenplay for the sake of starpower and a wacky, contrived melodrama that never existed in Krog's tale. This is most unfortunate because Krog's stories - her take on South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission - is one that should be heard far and wide. Unfortunately, the filmmakers bury that behind this odd and inexplicable need to feature a quasi-adulterous liaison between Binoche and Jackson's characters.
How did it turn out? Take a look at the DVD extras: Samuel L. Jackson is nowhere to be found. This is a man who knows quality and knows junk. He must taken a look at the final product and ran from this thing as fast as he could.
Good move. Smart guy.
Fairytale land crapola
Soft hearted, weak portrayal of an atrocity that should be told with more force and deliberation than this contrived piece of melo-dramatic fluff. I am so sick and tired of movies told from the prepertrator's point of view. They always result in this kind of crap with some semi-noble white character to offset all the evil acts that euros have done to people of African descent ad infintum. Plus add in a some jungle fever having negro from america, let him get some and hey, everything's alrite! Let's all hug and love one another and forget about it. I'm waiting for a movie of this type with a jewish character and a german nazi falling in love.

Movie studios, by and large, avoid controversial subjects like race the way you might avoid a hive of angry bees.
