DVD Tour of Duty - Complete Third Season
Company B's harrowing experiences as a combat unit during the Vietnam War come to a close with Tour of Duty's third season in 1989, which marked the end of this critically acclaimed television series. The episodes contained in this set are among the most dramatic of the entire program's run, as established and new characters alike meet the brutal realities and futility of the war head-on. Departing from the regular cast this season is Kim Delaney's Alex Devlin, but among the recurring players is Carl Weathers, as by-the-book Col. Brewster; Kyle Chandler (Early Edition) as Pvt. Griner; Greg Germann of Ally McBeal as the ill-fated Lt. Beller; and Lee Majors as a world-weary and middle-aged PVC (his son Lee Majors II also appears as his character's son in "Three Cheers for the Orange, White and Blue"). Story-wise, it's a downbeat season, with episodes delving into the My Lai massacre (a multi-episode arc beginning with "A Bodyguard of Lies"), racial tension ("Odd Man Out"), and finally, the challenges facing vets upon their return to the States (season closers "The Raid" and "Payback"). The solid, unsentimental writing and performances that earmark the series as a whole are in full effect in all 20 episodes of season 3, which netted an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sound Mixing, and a Viewers for Quality Television Award for series lead Terence Knox. As with the previous Tour of Duty boxed sets, season 3 offers no supplemental features, and replaces the period pop music that dotted the show's soundtrack with a generic incidental score. While unfortunate, neither factor should prevent viewers from exploring this excellent show. --Paul Gaita

Tour of Duty - 3rd Season DVD
This series takes me back to when I was in Vietnam. In a way I cannot explain. I think of the guys and what we went through together. It may not be for everybody but it helps me heal.
As usual the best TV series ever
Tour of Duty - is the best TV series ever, treating serious issues of the Vietnam war without hold back any punches. The acting and the scenarios make you feel that you are a part of each and every mission.
Where are the tunes?
This is an excellent series and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the generic soundtrack. For some reason the original soundtrack was left off the entire set and another bands music was put in it's place. No more Stones, Creedance, Mowtown or any of the best 60's music. I'm not sure why they did that. Maybe it was some kind of copyright problem. Anyway if your a fan of the series you will not be disappointed.

The first television series to depict the American soldier in combat during the Vietnam War, producer Zev Braun's Emmy-nominated Tour of Duty earned critical acclaim during its three-season run. Judging by the number of Internet sites devoted to the program, it also remains a fan favorite more than a decade after its 1989 cancellation; said fans should be pleased with this five-disc set, which compiles the entire 1987 debut season in a slightly altered format. What's untouched on this set is the drama and tension endured by the men of Company B, a racially and socially diverse platoon led by Sgt. Zeke Anderson (Terence Knox), as they serve their twelve-month tour in 1967. The 21 episodes of the first season (largely helmed by veteran TV writer-director Bill W.L. Norton) take the... Season 4 is arguably the best of COMBAT!'s five seasons. In Season 4 we find three of the best episodes in the series: The two part "Hills are for Heroes" and "The Leader." The two part episode "Hills are for Heroes" could easily have been a theatrical feature-length film. In another of his directorial efforts, Vic Morrow was able to capture additional emotional dimensions of Lt. Hanley and the rest of the squad.
COMBAT! found its stride during its fourth year. By that time, the stories revolved around the characters rather than adding superfluous misadventures with French resistance and other dramatic vehicles to add fluff to the story. Even though Saunders' squad, and Hanley's platoon, had taken four years to battle their way through France, each episode appears as... Even when I was a 10 year old watching the original Combat! series each Tuesday night, the screenplay writing and abilities of the actors to fulfill the potential of that writing outweighed any of my childhood draw towards simple action/adventure.
Watching these episodes today at age 50, I find that memory has not deluded me with nostolgic overestimation. This is among the most beautiful of dramatic TV writing, born from the tail end of an age known for great scripts. As I remember the series (Season IV has not yet been released as I post this review), this season presented the audience the series at the top of its game -- with the most memorable episodes contained on the Season III Operation II disk set.
I encourage you to not watch this series in the same way... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Vic Morrow DVD Release Date: Released the 29 March 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours
